Governor’s Message

GRASS VALLEY MOOSE NEWS NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2011

Jay Jacobsen Governor

The Home Legion meeting was moved up a week in November due to another schedule conflict. And don’t forget our eggnog special on Christmas Eve and the New Years Eve dinner and party serving a prime rib dinner.

There have been a few administrative changes that went into effect. First, the House Committee has established a new RV policy so look for the details in the newsletter. Moose International has raised the per capita charge for membership to the point where we have no other choice but to raise the LOOM dues by $10. The proposal was made at the General meeting in October and the vote carried. The effective date of the increase will be February 1, 2012.

On a brighter note, by the time the newsletter reaches your mailbox, the Lodge and Chapter will have a website. On this site you can get the most current information about events going on at the Lodge, plus a copy of the calendars, the current newsletters and more. Check it out at: www.grassvalleymoose.org

In closing, I would like to wish all a very happy holiday season. And as always I would like to hear from you. Please feel free to contact me with your ideas, complaints, or suggestions. I can be reached at (530) 477-5003, or by email at [email protected].

Jay Jacobsen Governor

September and October are now behind us. We had a lot of great activi-ties, with the fish fry, the Labor Day potluck, Oktoberfest, the Moose Riders 4th annual fundraiser, the Mystery Dinner and the Halloween parties. These events could not be accomplished without the many volunteers that donated their time, food and funds.

I would like to personally thank the following people for their efforts: for Labor Day -Walt and Illa Meek for donating the 40 pounds of chicken for Labor Day; for Oktoberfest - Kathy McCammon for the German Potato Salad, Nita Jacobsen for the Apple Strudel, Candy Elliott for the Bakery Goods, Bev Freeman for cooking, Dan Wiles for his donation of the Beer tents and bounce house, and our German Beer maiden, Gretchen, aka Joni Cadwallader. Additionally, thanks also to Mike Elliott who always pitches in even when he is not feeling well. I realize that I may have missed a few and I am sorry for that. We all know who the real volunteers are and we really appreciate everything you do.

We have a lot of events coming up in November and December so be sure to check the calendars and happenings pages for details. In October we started serving spaghetti dinners on Thursday from 5-7 p.m., and they will continue through the end of the year. Our Thanksgiving dinner has been moved to Friday this year due to a conflict with the Legion’s Golden Ball.

At the time of this publication, the date for the WOTM annual Christmas Party and $10 gift exchange is still being “firmed” up. Please watch for flyers at the Lodge or contact the Chapter for the actual date.

that we welcome new members with open arms. If you see someone that you don’t know introduce your-self to them. Just think about it. Have you ever gone to new place where you didn’t know anyone and no one spoke to you? Did you feel out of place and want to get out of that place at the first opportunity? Don’t allow our new members to have that same feeling. Make them welcomed; and, they will stay!

words, it’s time to get involved!

We are doing great on recruiting so far this year. Bobby Anderson, Walt Meek, David Dean, Ted Bivert, Rick Dandridge, and Jim Abbott have had their dues paid for next year by just recruiting two new members into our Great Fraternity. While we are doing great on recruiting, we are not doing so great at membership retention. It is sad to see new members join our Moose Fraternity, and then not renew their membership. It is up to us

Where has this

year gone? It is alarming to me that we are already coming into the Holiday Season. Yep, our Turkey dinner, our gift baskets, our Eggnog Party, our Christmas Parties; and, then our New Year’s Celebration. This is also the time of year when we need your help more than ever. It really takes a lot of time and effort to put on all these functions. We will need your help in cooking, dish-washing, serving, cleaning (our Lodge and grounds), setting tables, maintenance, and perhaps, Chairing these functions and events. In other

number of days allowed for parking of Recreational Vehicle (RV) shall not exceed three (3) days. The first day of parking is free, the fee for parking on the

KIDS Club

Kids Club Meetings are now on the 1st and 3rd Mondays at 6:30 p.m. Parents and

The Grass Valley Moose Legion Committee is in the planning stages of both short and long term projects to help improve our Lodge. All Moose Legionnaires are encouraged to attend our monthly Moose Legion meetings and give their input. We need your ideas on which projects we should take on and what kind of fundraisers we should do. We also need to plan our monthly social events for Moose Legionnaires. The Grass Valley Moose Legion Committee meets each 2nd Sunday of the month at 11:00 a.m.

Congratulations to Bobby Anderson for achieving membership in the Moose Legion – the Degree of Service. We are looking forward to the contributions Bobby will be

bringing to our team of dedicated Moose Members.

Membership in the Degree of Service offers qualified Moose Members additional opportunities to serve our Lodge, our childhood city – Mooseheart, and our City of Contentment – Moosehaven; and, it opens the door to you and your family for exciting trips, special events, community service projects and other unique activities available only to members of the Moose Legion. Our Moose Legion Celebrations are held at various Lodges within District 4, and serve as a means to share ideas and enjoy good times with fellow Moose Legionnaires. Annual Holiday Food Baskets

Holidays Are Coming—Donations Are Needed.

Now that the Holidays are upon us, we will collecting non-perishable food items for families in need. Last year, with your help, we were able to take care of five families. Hopefully, we

will be able to do the same this year. A donation barrel will be in the lobby of the Social Quarters. Suggested items are canned vegetables, cranberry sauce, dressing mix, cake & frosting mix, canned fruit, peanut butter, jam, cooking oil, jello, pudding,, syrup, pancake mix, etc. Cash donations

will also be gratefully accepted so that we may buy the perishable items. Near the holiday, we will supply the turkey, dressing makings, fresh vegetables, potatoes, etc. Please find it within your heart to donate to the less fortunate. They will appreciate it beyond words.

Spaghetti Dinner Volunteers Needed

Spaghetti Dinner is now being served every Thursday, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and we are looking for volunteers to help with the dinner. Trust me; this is one really easy activity that is so simple anyone, YES, even you can

help with. No more excuses or thinking about it, now is the time to step up and be a part of your Moose Lodge. Don’t be afraid, we don’t bite and you can’t mess anything up. Please see or call Jay Jacobsen (530-477-5003) or

email Jay at [email protected], or leave your name and telephone number with the bartender, or whatever manner is most convenient to you.

Dues Increasing

At the LOOM General Meeting held on October 5, 2011, increasing Membership Dues were voted on. An additional $10 per year was passed increasing Lodge dues from $40 to $50 per year, effective February 1, 2012.

For further details, see Governor’s Message on page 2.

What a surprise - nobody volun-teered to be the newsletter editor!

Please, we need someone to work on the newsletter.

Come on guys, don’t let this be the LAST newsletter!

The Lodge and Chapter will have a website. The website should be accessible in November. On this site you can get the most current information about events going on at the Lodge, plus a copy of the calendars, the current newsletters and more. Check it out at :

We are not always one big happy family but we need to keep striving to be our best for the good of our Lodge. For a burden heavy to one is born lightly by many.

These are not just words but an ideal we must live by. We all have our special talents and we must figure out how to use all of them. This year can be the best ever if

we all put our hearts and souls into our Lodge. What can you do for our Lodge and what would you like to put your mark on?
