Lodge #2284 Helps Those Battling California Wildfires
Congratulations and a job well done to the members of the Clearlake Oaks Lodge #2284, who have worked non-stop to assist those battling the CA Wildfires. Many people found shelter at the Lodge, where tables overflowed with donated food to serve over 200 evacuees who spent the night there or in their motor homes in the Lodge’s parking lot.
When the Rocky Fire broke out and barreled up the north side of the county, Moose Lodge member Matt Nelson knew he needed to dig out a fire line in a large field east of the lodge, located in Clearlake Oaks at the intersection of Highways 20 and 53. There was one problem though; he didn’t have a tractor. He put the call out on his Facebook page at 4 p.m., asking if anyone had a tractor for his use. By 6 a.m. the next morning, three were waiting for him at the Moose Lodge. It’s just one example of the power of social media in times of crisis. As the fire burned and evacuees fled from their homes, the Moose Lodge posted on their Facebook page that people could take shelter there. Evacuees piled in. The lodge then consistently updated their social media site, asking for helping hands and donations of food and supplies. Volunteers showed up in droves, bringing with them so much food the lodge ran out of room in their freezer.
This is just one example of the true meaning of being a Moose Member!

He cooks everything to order with the exception of the special on Friday night dinner. This means that if you do not order the special, you may have to wait for your meal. We only have one fryer for fish, and on heavy fish nights, it can get backed up really fast. So we ask you for your patience. The food is worth the wait! Governor’s Message
Hello All,
Well the summer is flying past, hopefully taking the worst of the heat and fire danger along with it. We have lots of events this fall to look forward to: Labor Day potluck, Moose Annual Convention in Reno (September 10-13), and our annual Halloween party just to name a few. I’m happy to say our lodge is in much better shape financially than it was eight months ago, and I’d like to thank all our generous members and our hard working volunteers for helping to make this happen.
One of my personal goals as Governor is to increase our membership; the last time I checked we were down only eleven members so we are not far behind. I’m sure with a little effort we can end the year with more members than we started with!
Fraternally yours—Ron Hilger-Governor Phone: 444-0849

Moose Riders Message
Hello everyone. Well somehow I got side-railed into becoming your new Grass Valley Moose Riders President
(I owe you one Amy!!!). I am honored and I hope I can make everyone proud. First, we would like to thank each
of you who donated to our last fundraiser ride for kids. Everyone was so generous and it is appreciated. On
September 19, we will be participating in the 6th annual Welcome Home Vets Poker run and BBQ. This is a
fundraiser to help our vets and their families with military-related psychological conditions. This is a family
affair. Bikers check in at 8 a.m. (please register online - welcomehomevets.org) with the run starting at 9 a.m.
The ride begins and ends at Western Gateway Park in Penn Valley. Go to the Run's website for all the details. Its a
great fundraiser and there will something for all ages. You know, you don't have to own a bike to become a
Moose Rider, all you have to have is the love and passion to help others. Heck, I joined with my mini-van! All of
you who are already Moose Riders, I would like to see more of you getting involved. If you have any free time, let
me know. We have some projects coming up that can always use some extra hands. Come to a meeting and bring
some fundraising ideas. We meet the first Sunday of the month at high noon. Please watch the whiteboard in the
little room for news. If you would like to order a Moose Rider shirt, please let Amy Benfield or myself know. The
more we can order, the better.
Keep the shiny side up! Candy
A Message from the Sports Committee
On August 8th we held our first sports day and had a great time. We held a Bocce Ball Tournament that was won by the team of Ron Hilger (way to go Governor) and Chris Abbott Anderson. Others played ping pong, horseshoes and pool. We barbequed hot dogs and hamburgers and pot luck items were supplied by others. It was a small gathering (due to poor advertising by us) but all in all a very successful day. A big thank you to those of you that helped out.
In the future we would like to run a triathlon event with Bocce, Horseshoes and Pool.
The Sports committee is always looking for members that can be counted on to volunteer when we have such events. There are always a few members helping out but the more members we have volunteering, the smoother events can be run. We also need people with creative ideas.
If you are interested please contact Mike at the lodge or call 530-575-4224.
Regards,
Mike Trost and the Sports Committee

Earn points for helping the Moose grow and prosper, then redeem your
points for valuable awards, gifts and experiences.
What is Moose Rewards?
The Moose Rewards Program seeks to create long-term member relationships while adding value to the Moose membership. It is intended to improve member retention and increase participation in areas that are important to the Fraternity. Further, it will help Moose International identify habits, trends and priorities, so that we can build more effective programs in the future.
How does it work?
Points are awarded when members participate in activities that help the Fraternity prosper and grow. Examples include sponsoring new candidates, holding office, attending meetings, or completing training. In turn, those points can be redeemed for merchandise or experiences that are meaningful to our members.
How do I earn points?
Points are earned in a variety of ways, such as sponsoring a person into the fraternity, paying your annual dues on time, being an officer of the lodge/chapter, attending the International Moose Convention, etc. For a full description, please refer to the chart on this Moose International website (Moose Rewards page) or the Moose Rewards brochure that may be available in your lodge.
Every member has an opportunity to participate and your points are awarded automatically without any paperwork or submissions.
Please visit the Moose Rewards page,www.mooserewards.org, for the complete set of official rules and
information. Questions? Contact Member Services at 630-906-3658.

‘BECAUSE OF YOU…….’
Have you ever stopped to think what kind of a role you play in the everyday workings of the Moose? Ponder a few minutes and see how many things you can think of, and how important your role is to your family, community, Lodge, Mooseheart, and Moosehaven. You might be surprised at how important you really are.
BECAUSE OF YOU . . . joining the Moose, you have set in motion the protection of your family. The Moose provides every member the security of knowing that their children will never be without help. Qualified children and their mothers are welcome at Mooseheart and given a solid religious, academic and vocational background. BECAUSE OF YOU . . . you also provide the comfort and security of knowing that there is also available for you, the qualified Moose member, the helping hand in your retirement years at Moosehaven. BECAUSE OF YOU . . . your community benefits in so many ways through community service. Sponsoring of the Boy Scouts, youth sports, hospital and nursing home visitations and entertainment for those in need of cheer in their time of suffering, highway cleanup, fundraiser benefits, Health Fair, food drives, blood bank, and the list goes on and on.
BECAUSE OF YOU . . . YOUR Lodge can prosper and grow, so that you and your family can have a beautiful Lodge Home where you may attend the many functions for the entire family to enjoy; a place where you have a pleasant social outlet and the kind of friends who will remain loyal through the good and bad times; a place where new friends are made by the entire family.
BECAUSE OF YOU . . . approximately, 270 boys and girls now residing at Mooseheart have a future. Approximately 10,000 boys and girls were given a future and the enjoyment of living at Mooseheart. Just think . . . all these children could have been on the streets, involved in crime, drugs, gangs, or maybe even died, if it hadn’t been for you!! BECAUSE OF YOU . . . they have that safe harbor where they can grow up to be the leaders of tomorrow. It is heart-warming to see tragedy turned into success, and this is only possible; ’BECAUSE OF YOU’ the Loyal Men and Women of the Moose.
BECAUSE OF YOU . . . many of our own who have suffered hardships in their later years, may now reside in the comfort of knowing that they no longer have to worry on how they will survive in their later years. You have not only given them a helping hand, but you have given them extra years to enjoy a healthy and contented life in Moosehaven. BECAUSE OF YOU . . . Their worries are gone and they sleep more soundly knowing what tomorrow brings.
‘BECAUSE OF YOU’ . . . there is a brighter future for all.

A Note from the Director General
On July 27, 2013 the fraternity celebrated the 100th birthday of our Child City. A commitment to renew and
rebuild Mooseheart's School was solidified during the 2012 Tampa Convention and fundraising began in
earnest. A goal of $10,000,000 was set for the three-phase project, $1,000,000 for each decade of
Mooseheart's exceptional care of childhood needs. We are in the midst of the final phase of this magnificent
gift to our children - a commitment to their education and an opportunity to realize their dreams. Big or small,
every donation given has built the educational foundation of our Child City strong and true. Our founder,
James J. Davis's voice still echoes throughout the campus today, "Every child is entitled to at least a high school
education and a trade." Thank you for leaving a compassionate and loving legacy for our Mooseheart children.
