MISTS AND MELLOW FRUITFULNESS

According to the Met Office, 1st September marks the official beginning of autumn, immortally characterised by Keats as the Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness. It won’t be long before the hills outside our windows rise spectrally like islands amid a misty sea.

I remember my Mum years ago gazing out soulfully from the stage of some church hall and uttering the closing words of Philip Johnson’s 1938 play which are also its title: It’s Autumn Now. Her character and her husband have reluctantly come to accept that age has caught up with them, and they must adjust to new restrictions on their life and expectations.

Many older people are faced with the same challenge of acceptance: DIYers who must be careful of lifting and heights; formerly athletic women now confined by arthritis; men who until a short time ago were more like strapping lads than pensioners. Often, the spirit rebels against the body’s decline, and beats in frustration against the walls of the invisible prison.

Even more widespread is the fear of dementia. This condition is nearly always more painful to loved ones than to the sufferer, as the person they knew slips ever further into a world without memory or even recognition. It’s one of those diseases whose dread stretches far beyond those it actually affects. Let me not put you off consulting your GP if you feel the need: but the relevant page of the NHS website lists symptoms of dementia which many of us have suffered from all our lives. People mislay their car keys from the age of about 22; and if everyone who arrived in a room wondering why they’d gone there rushed off to A&E, the NHS would suffer immediate and terminal collapse. As Jonathan Copus once memorably said: ‘I’ve been forgetting things for as long as I can remember.’

The mists of life’s autumn are real, and can be depressing. But what about the fruitfulness, mellow or otherwise? Advancing years bring with them a treasure-hoard of wisdom, and with it an acceptance of a positive kind. The thought that I grow old, I grow old / I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled may torture T S Eliot’s J. Alfred Prufrock; but as we grow in seniority, many of us are released from sartorial anxiety, or indeed from caring overmuch what other people think of us. And that freedom can unlock a fruitfulness that burgeons like a blossoming rose. We can think the unthinkable, speak the unfettered truth which other people dare not utter.

So let’s try and see through the mists of ageing and recognise the potential fruitfulness. After all, as Leroy ‘Satchel’ Paige remarked, ‘Age is a question of

Page 5: Grapevine - Frenni Churchesfrennichurches.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/... · I remember my Mum years ago gazing out soulfully from the stage of some ... When it comes to the

mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter.’ Jonathan Copus

A NEW MINISTRY

On Sunday, 12th August, our Archdeacon, the Ven. Paul Mackness, licensed Eunice Batchelor JP, Pastoral Eucharistic Assistant and Commissioned her as Focal Minister of Llanfyrnach. This was a significant development in the life of our Local Ministry Area, and representatives of all five of our parishes took part in the service. We wish Eunice every blessing in her new ministry among us.

HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT

That was the message from the Cakes ‘n’ Bakes stall at Nevern Show, and the punters took up the message with gusto, devouring everything on the stall except one packet of shortbread. The result was a profit – after deductions – of a record £194.29 to feed the hungry coffers of Mynachlog-ddu Church. Congratulations and thanks go to the team of six who personned the stall, but mainly to those from Mynachlog-ddu and our other parishes who rallied round and baked their hearts out to achieve such a magnificent result.

HARVEST OF VERSE AND SONG

Our harvest festivals this year will take the form of a pastiche of popular hymns and other musical items interspersed with appropriate readings, some from the Bible and others not. All the services are on a Sunday, and the dates and times are as follows:

Page 6: Grapevine - Frenni Churchesfrennichurches.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/... · I remember my Mum years ago gazing out soulfully from the stage of some ... When it comes to the

6

Mynachlog-ddu: 7th October, 7 pm

Clydau: 14th October, 7 pm

Llanglydwen: 21st October, 3 pm

Llanfyrnach: 21st October, 7 pm

Llanwinio: 28th October, 7 pm

Except for Llanwinio, the Harvest Festival will be the only service in that church that day.

I’M STILL HERE

Those are the words cartoonists and satirists used to put into the mouth of John Major, remember? Whether they’re true of Jonathan depends on the meeting he is due to have with the Bishop on the 8th of this month. Watch this space!

USTUBE

Jonathan was tasked with producing a video for the archdeaconry showing the evangelistic opportunities in the new, 15-parish Local Ministry Area. It suggested we divide the non-homogeneous region up into three Pastoral Areas, coinciding with the existing groupings. If this scheme meets with episcopal approval, the challenge will be to make the most of our new unity, and not just carry on as though nothing had happened. One means of unification which was flaunted in the video was this very publication, Grapevine. But we can’t force everyone in the new LMA to subscribe: we can only encourage them. So if you’re reading this and you know someone who ‘ought’ to be subscribing under

Page 7: Grapevine - Frenni Churchesfrennichurches.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/... · I remember my Mum years ago gazing out soulfully from the stage of some ... When it comes to the

7

the new regime, please do us all a favour and try and persuade them and their friends to sign up.

CODES AND COPYCATS

You know when some oily politician sounds off about Brexit and Norman Smith has to come on afterwards and explain what they were really saying? Well, it’s a bit like that with the Bible. Lots of it makes a lot more sense when it’s ‘decoded’.

When it comes to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, there’s another question which needs answering: there’s so much material common to two or all three of them that it’s clear someone has been copying. But who’s been sneaking a look at the next guy’s exam paper? And why have they sometimes copied word for word, and at other times altered the stuff a bit?

Codebreakers is a short introduction to reading the first three Gospels with greater understanding of what went into their making. Members of the Core Ministry Team are meeting at Llys Myrddin, Efailwen, on Mondays 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th October at 7 pm for a PowerPoint presentation and discussion on these very issues. If you’d like to join them, you’ll be most welcome.

More sporty stuff from the Jones/Thomas clan

Congratulations to Ella Thomas, Rhyd, Llanfyrnach, who competed in the South West Wales Cup, Freestyle Dance competition in Swansea on 22nd July 2018. After a break from competing of nearly a year, Ella came 4th in the fast competition and 1st in the slow competition in the under 10s section. Ella, is the granddaughter of Hazel and David Jones, Caerllinos, Llanfyrnach and of Beverley and Phil Thomas, School House, Trelech. All competitors from the Heaven Dance Academy danced brilliantly, well done to all. Hazel Jones

Never too late for a Highland fling!

You could have knocked Eleanor and John Parry over with a feather—or maybe a thistle—when their daughter Clare announced to the family during a holiday in Scotland that she and Julian, her long-term partner of 25 years, had just tied the knot! The crafty pair disappeared off on their own for the day and came back wearing wedding rings, having paid a visit to Gretna Green!!! What a wonderful surprise for the family, and we all send them our heartiest congratulations. You took a long time to save up for that ring, Julian!!

Page 8: Grapevine - Frenni Churchesfrennichurches.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/... · I remember my Mum years ago gazing out soulfully from the stage of some ... When it comes to the

Clare is the daughter of Eleanor and John Parry, Glandwr, and Julian is the son of the late Jeff ‘the Baker’ Thomas from Llandissilio. The wedding took place on Friday the 3rd of August.

As a side note, Eleanor tells me that you can book witnesses at Gretna Green in advance of a secret wedding or elopement at £40 a throw! That surely must be the cushiest job in the world!!!

Mynachlog-ddu

There will be a new book group starting in Mynachlog-ddu on the third Friday evening of each month. We will meet to discuss books of an ‘inspiring and thought-provoking nature’ and to share refreshments. The group is open to adults of any age who can find their way to the village. Please contact [email protected] for further details. There will be a restriction on numbers! Sue Player

Macmillan Coffee Morning

There will be a Macmillan Coffee Morning in the Bethel Chapel vestry, Mynachlog-ddu on Saturday 29th September from 10am. This will include a Poppy Making Workshop to make a display for Remembrance Sunday. All artists, coffee drinkers and cake-eaters are invited. Families with children particularly welcome. If you would like to help on the day, or make a cake to share please contact [email protected] Sue Player

Mens’ Sheds

This is an organisation setup in local communities for the benefit of men. The idea originated in Australia several years ago and there are over 2000 Mens’ sheds in Australia with the aim of tackling growing concerns of social isolation amongst the male population as high numbers of men had time on their hands (due to retirement, unemployment, illness etc.) The Mens’ Shed movement is based on the understanding that men are more likely to help themselves and attend something they have setup or have some control over. While they may struggle to talk face to face, men do talk shoulder to shoulder when engaged in some form of activity or shared task. There are about 200 sheds in Ireland and up to 50 or so in Wales.

They are self governed, self supported and sustainable. Shedders can be artists, collectors, story tellers, amateur radio enthusiasts, model makers and many more.

The Frenni Shed has only been going a few weeks and has a group of about eight working on three projects at the moment. Making work benches suitable for a range of activities such as potting sheds, workshops or any where a sturdy bench is useful, it is intended to sell a few for group funds. Another project is restoring a 3 gang mower suitable for sports fields, golf courses etc. again, the intention is to restore it to full working order and then sell it on. A third project is to restore a load of metal framed “conference chairs” and again, sell them on.

The group meets every Wednesday from 3pm to 6pm at the shed in Hermon, (at the far end of the community centre sports field) parking in the allotment car park, come along, enjoy a cuppa and have a chat and see what's going on see www.mensshedscymru.co.uk for further information David Jones

Glandwr WI

Saturday 18th August saw the annual Glandwr W.I. Summer garden party in Hebron – on this occasion marking the W.I's 30th anniversary. Though the weather was disappointing—meaning that the delicious, calorific teas had to be consumed in the barn and not the garden - there was a good attendance.

As well as the attraction of wonderful food, there were photographic and flower arranging competitions as well as some stalls and a raffle to entertain the visitors.

To mark the anniversary, a celebratory cake was cut by two original members and enjoyed by everyone.

Our pictures show some of our guests enjoying their tea, and the anniversary cake, flower arrangement competition entries, and a plate produced to celebrate the centenary of the Women's Institute movement.

LLANWINIO W.I. There was no meeting in August but on the 11th of September Emily Skeet will address the group on ‘Life as a female Chimney Sweep’.

New members are always welcome. Meetings are usually held at Llanwinio

drivers were encouraged by a good number of supporters. The Mayor and Mayoress were also in attendance and the Vicar thanked Councillor Edmond Davies for his kind donation to church funds. In the evening, and despite the downpour for much of the day, the event continued with music by well known local singer, Clive Edwards as well as Ian Roberts. We take this opportunity to thank all concerned in organising this successful enterprise.

On Wednesday August 8 the Vicar officiated at the burial of the cremated remains of the late Mrs Marjorie Brittania Davies, formerly of Station Road, St. Clears, who died on January 31, aged almost 100. Mrs Davies's parents once farmed at Cefn, Meidrim. Her daughter, Mrs Wendy Williams, was present with her three children and husband at the interment.

Plans for forming the St. Clears Local Ministry Area are making progress and it is hoped that the scheme will be implemented in October.

We welcome to the village Mr and Mrs Bennett who have just moved into Croeso, the former home of Mrs Elizabeth Jameson. They join their son and daughter in law who have also moved to Meidrim recently. We trust that they will all settle in happily.

Our best wishes go to Mrs Ann Jones, Newtown, who is still receiving hospital treatment and is showing, as ever, much fortitude. Ann was brought up in Meidrim, married Hywel in the parish church and had her daughter Sioned baptised here in 1994.

Merthyr

The funeral of the late John Clive Spong took place on Thursday July 31 at St. Martin's followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn. The organist was Mr William Bott and the Rector was assisted by the Revd and Hon. Adam Bruce who read the lesson from the Authorised Version of the English Bible.

Thanks go to these gentlemen and to Mrs Jennifer Bott and Mrs Marilyn Davies who supplied the altar flowers on the day of the funeral and also to the churchwardens for their notable help with parking and other arrangements on that day.

John was born at Dulwich, South London, in March 1928. He attended St. Edward's School, Oxford, where he grew to love the liturgy of the Prayer Book. After attending agricultural college in Kent he started his career as a farm manager in the Cothi valley, an area for which he retained a great affection. Some former neighbours from that part of Carmarthenshire were present in church for his funeral. In 1956, the year of the Hungarian uprising, he moved to Merthyr, a much quieter part of the world where he remained for the rest of his life. He was a keen reader who also liked collecting works of art. His wife, Ruth, predeceased him in October 2013. May they both rest in peace and may those who mourn John be strengthened for the days ahead. We also give thanks for John's significant generosity to the work of his parish church here over the years. John’s mortal remains will be interred alongside his wife’s in late August.

Abernant

We extend our sympathy to Mrs Emily Convery whose brother, Mr Samuel Wright, died in Canada recently. He was a native of Northern Ireland and emigrated to North America many years ago.

Old parish churches like our own are storehouses of history and accordingly attract the attention of those looking into their family history. This is certainly true of St Lucia’s. Recently Mrs Jeni Molyneux of Broadways, Worcester, paid us a visit and claimed to be a descendant of the Howells family who provided a Tudor incumbent for this parish. Imagine her pleasure when she discovered plaques in church commemorating some of her ancestors. She had already had

Page 19: Grapevine - Frenni Churchesfrennichurches.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/... · I remember my Mum years ago gazing out soulfully from the stage of some ... When it comes to the

19

a happy time consulting documents she had seen at the National Library and set out to establish all the family connections.

She has written a most appreciative note to Canon Gainer and we also thank her for her kind donation to church funds. Having said all this, it is important to add that our little church is far more than a museum but remains the spiritual home of a worshipping community. Mrs Molyneux is very keen to join us one day at a service here.

We congratulate Professor Elwen Evans on the honour of being invited to give a lecture at the National Eisteddfod in Cardiff. Apparently she had to compete against intrusive sounds emanating from the nearby stage used for modern music but she was not to be distracted. Our informant, himself a retired Law Professor, commented that her lecture was masterly as befits someone who has had a most distinguished career in the Law.

On that same afternoon, someone else with strong local links was also honoured, this time on the steps of the Senedd where he came over as a genuinely humble man. Geraint Thomas has won renown as the winner of the Tour de France and this feat is doubtless the result of years of dedication . The people of Cardiff, of Wales and of Banc y felin are all very proud of him. Llongyfarchiadau!

Autumn

Thanks to everyone for all the events so far, for all your hard work and generosity: The Fete at Llanboidy; the Gift Day at Clunderwen; the Teas at Llandysilio and the Fish Evening at the Station House.

You will notice that Harvest Services are beginning to pop up which means Autumn is upon us. The seasons come and go, the cycle continues as God promised. It is a to remember to thank God for all his goodness to us, we sometimes forget we owe our very being to him and the very world we live on, for the beauty all around us and the fruitfulness of the earth. It is humanity who has marred things yet God still loves us.

In Memoriam

Our sympathy to the family and friends of Ashoke Chaudhuri. The funeral took place at Parc Gwyn on 28th June and a Memorial Service followed at St Mary’s, Cardigan led by Rev John Bennett.

Also to the family and friends of Hilda Meers. The funeral took place at Parc Gwyn on Wednesday 1st Aug and was taken by Canon Roger Jones.

Welcome

Welcome to the Church Family to Faith Esther Penn, Christened at St Mary’s on Sunday 15th July. Congratulations to Roger and Celeste.

EGLWYS GYMYN

On July 15th Eglwys Gymyn hosted a concert with the 'Harries Family of Woodstock', comprising several members of the family, both singing and on the accompanying musical instruments. The near 100 fortunate members of the audience were lucky to enjoy such a wonderful evenings entertainment of old

and new hymns and songs. It is not possible to single out one performance—the young ladies’ voices were particularly heart-warming but also the harmonising of the male duet with a song of the valleys stirred at least this person’s soul. There are always two purposes behind a function like this and one is often overlooked. The bringing together of the members of our community is always as important as the fund raising and in this we think we are successful.

And the evening didn't conclude with the concert, but continued in the church hall with a raffle and a lovely tea arranged by the ladies of the church. After covering all the concert expenses our concert organiser, Mr B Nicholas, was able to report another £600 to help swell the church funds.

In connection with the church funds, August saw the delivery of our Quinquennial report, which, to say the least, is very comprehensive and thorough. Now a PCC meeting will be needed to review the issues raised and plan the response and action plan.

Over the August Bank Holiday weekend, August 24th to 27th inclusive, the church, as reported in earlier Grapevines, is holding a Lego exhibition weekend organised by Mr J Lewis-Tunster. At the time of writing, the variety and extent of the exhibits is likely to be on a scale you would not expect in a provincial church hall so we hope the attendance will match the effort put into its organisation.

On September 29th at 10.00 am, we will be holding our Tractor Rally which is becoming an annual favourite. The Rally will start and finish in the Church car park and tea/coffee will be provided in the church hall.

The Church Harvest service will be held at 7.00 pm on October 5th and will be followed by supper in the Church Hall.

WHITLAND MALE VOICE CHOIR

On Friday 3rd August we were in concert with Clive Edwards ‘Noson Lawen’ at the Social Club, Whitland, in aid of Prostate Cymru and Whitland Week. It was a great evening with Clive, and the soloist was local talent Ceulyn Davies, its lovely to see local talented young people mesmerising the audience. Compère for the evening was another young talent, Owain Davies from Llanllwni. He is a natural entertainer and very funny.

On Saturday 18th August we have a wedding at St John’s Church, Pembroke Dock. Keep this date clear in your diary!

On Friday 24th August we have a BBQ and singing at Creswell Quay, starting at 5.30pm. All are welcome!

Please note that the choir website is on whitlandmalechoir.net and not whitlandmalechoir.co.uk.

We are still looking for new members to join our choir. If you are interested please attend our practice sessions on Thursday evenings at the Memorial Hall, Whitland at 7.30pm. You can sit and listen or join in, no obligation.
