Grammar Vocabulary
1. Noun- word that names a person, place, animal or thing
2. Adjective- a word that describes or modifies a noun or pronoun; they tell
what kind, which one, or how many
3. Verb- shows an action or state of being. It’s what you do.
4. Pronoun- takes the place of a noun
5. Proper Noun- names the noun
6. Adverb-a word that describes a verb
7. Synonym- a word that means almost the same as another
8. Antonym- a word that means the opposite of another word
9. Homonym- word that sounds the same as another but has a different
meaning
10.Subject-maybe one or more words, it is the part of the sentence that is doing
something. It does the verb.
11.Predicate-tells something about what the subject does. It contains the verb.
12. Preposition- a word that shows a relationship between a noun or pronoun
and other words in a sentence: in, on, by, to since
13 Imperative sentence- gives a command or makes a request, always ends in
a period (.)
14 Exclamatory sentence- express surprise or strong feeling, ends in an
exclamation mark. (!)
15. Declarative sentence- makes a statement, always ends in a period. (.)
16. Interrogative sentence- asks a question, ends with a question mark (?)
17. Conjunction-a word such as and, or, and but that connects related words or
group of words.
18. Interjection-any member of a class of words expressing emotion,
distinguished in most often in isolation. Hey! Oh! Ouch! Ugh! Good Grief! Indeed

What is a Noun?
A noun is a person, place, thing, or animal. If the noun is the name
of a person it is called a proper noun. A proper noun is always
capitalized.
