Couple held forswindling investorsthrough chit fundSubburaj and Pappa alias

Dhanalakshmi (residents ofPrakasam Street, T. Nagar),who were running a chit fund,were arrested by the Econo-mic Offences Wing (EOW) onMay 10 for allegedly cheatingabout 40 depositors of Rs. 43lakhs promising attractive re-turns.

The duo did not return thepromised amounts to the de-positors even after severalmonths and were missing fromtheir house, according to a com-plaint filed by Gopal, one of thedepositors.

The couple had been collect-ing deposits since January2010 from T. Nagar and otherareas but did not give any re-ceipts to the depositors, policesaid.

An EOW team headed by P.R. Venmathy (Superinten-dent of Police) traced thecouple through a mobile num-ber and arrested them on May10.

They were produced in theChief Metropolitan Magis-trate’s Court in Egmore whichremanded them to judicial cus-tody.

They were later lodged inPuzhal prison.

The EOW has invited com-plaints from depositors whocan lodge their complaintsin person in the office of theSuperintendent of Police, Eco-nomic Offences Wing (EOW)II, Anna Nagar, the EOWsaid.

A senior police official la-mented that despite severalcases of chit fund frauds com-ing to light people continue tofall prey to swindlers.

One lives andlearns. Life is a never ending teacher except that there are moreconvoluted aspects of it readily exploited by the crooks and thecorrupt.

Nature, once in a while, indulges in calisthenics and this April itmust have thought “Why not shake my old bones a little”. Well,it did, for it does not have to seek parliamentary orPresidential assent, and took its preferred Eastern route throughthe Indonesian brine and shook up the poor chaps just so that theydon’t forget that they are mere tenants under sufferance and thatthis jolly good globe is Nature’s ball to play with it as Nature deemsit fit. Nature did not kill anyone this time but asked Indonesianseismologists and whatnotologists to warn the rest of the worldthat it may turn somnambulist and take a walk westwards.Indonesia with so many Buddhist relics in it warned our chaps hereand, by the time a few people felt that a pencil on the table had nobusiness to fall unaided, we were prepared to face even a FukushimaTerror.

Poor I, at the computer, felt nothing and rattled off my nonsensefor the consumption of the millions who read my No Holds Barredcolumn. Not even a pencil rolled off my desk. In my short life of 78plus, except that chair-rolling 8 years ago, there had never beenany eye-rolling at me by even a non-existent boss for I never hadone. Life is beautiful and, on my hundredth birthday on June 23,2033, I will repeat that it jolly well is, Fukushima and Koodankulamnotwithstanding.

Sir, -I read the report in your May 12-18 issue about the bee hive ona branch of an avenue tree in Baroda Street. Bees build hives in placeswhich they consider safe. They do not harm anyone but would not liketo be disturbed in any manner. A bee hive is a beauty of nature. It iseducative to observe a bee hive.

I say this from my own experience. There has been a hive for morethan three years on a Ashoka tree just outside a window of my office.There has not been a single instance of any person in the office beingstung. After about a year the bees leave the hive and another colonyof bees occupies the hive. I feel that it is prudent not to disturb the beehive mentioned in your report. - Dr. I. S. Mali said that he did a courseon ‘Freehand and outline mod-ern drawing’ in GovernmentCollege of Arts in 1971. Malialso does oil and water colorpaintings which have com-

manded good sales in exhibi-tions.

Police said that Himanshu,a financial agent took the Rs.54 lakhs as commission afterIla gave the firm the LoC, pur-portedly from HSBC, Chinabut it turned out to be fake.

The couple were arrested ona complaint from MayurSridhar (Manager of RefexRefrigerants).

A case was registered underIPC section 420 (cheating),465 (punishment for forgery),467 (forgery of valuable secu-rity), 468 (forgery for purposeof cheating), 471 (using as genu-ine a forged document or elec-tronic record).

They were produced before amagistrate court who re-manded them to judicial cus-tody.
