Graham Dixon
5th November 2013
Dear Sirs
I wish to make this written represention in support of my objection to the routing of wind-farm cabling through the saltmarsh south of Heysham as part of the Walney Extension Offshore Windfarm by Dong Energy (UK) Ltd.
About myself:-
I am not a scientist, biologist, anarchist, serial protester or member of the “Looney left” and you will note, from my adress that I am not a “N.I.M.B.Y. I am a 59 year old male who happens to have a deep interest in insects – particularly moths.
My concern is that any disturbance to this unique site (eco system) will have a more than detrimental effect on the last remaining breeding population of The Belted Beauty Moth which thrives on this short stretch of coastal salt marsh. These moths cannot go anywhere else for several reasons – but as I see it:-
1. There is no suitable alternative site that satisfies the delicately balanced conditions required for this moth to survive and continue breeding successfully.
2. Even if there was another site – only the males would have a (slight) chance of getting there (The female of this species is wingless and unable to fly).
Attached is a copy of a petition that I organised (1072 signatures at time of writing) + a copy of the reasons that 55 of the petition signatories gave for signing. I would like these to be made available (printed or read out) at the meeting.
Yours faithfully
Graham Dixon
To: Rt Hon Eric Pickles MP, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government

55 reasons given by signatories
I signed because the government needs to be reminded that life isn't all about commercial enterprise and gain for humans.
It's worth the extra cost of going round the site to save the last population
I signed the petition as this Moths future depends on our actions
this is this species' last stronghold in Britain. to jeopardise that would be reprehensible
Biodiversity should be maintained
It is beginning to depress me to see so many beautiful creatures becoming extinct due to building and construction on their home sites. It has to stop!
The projected cost of such projects must include an accurate element for conserving the local wildlife. When all companies are forced to do this then tenders are more likely to be allocated fairly and with more chance of a satisfactory outcome.
Not many moths and butterflies around this year...
It is not just about wildlife it is about conservation. If the environment does not support wildlife eventually it won't support us!!!!
cos I want them to be there for my grandchildren and their grandchildren
Nature can do without people - but people can not do without nature!
I am all for renewable energy, but not at the expense of destroying valuable habitat
Just because this development isn't about oil doesn't make it any less destructive than any other big power station development. We need our biodiversity, we need these precious creatures and habitats, heaven knows we've lost enough already. We don't need wind farm cables in this place.
I signed because we are losing our beautiful natural world . There is not much of it left as it is .
We must not totally lose this rare moth.
Because we need to protect all our British species, including this beautiful moth.
Because there is too much wildlife under threat of extinction
To try and prevent yet another English extinction under the watch of the 'greenest giovernment ever'
The last place in England the Belted Beauty is found. Do you need any other reason?
We are loosing too much of our nature to "progress".
The fact that so many other organisms depend on moths for food, pollination e.c.t is overlooked way too much. I wrote a book on moths for my extended project at college and as I learned more
and more about these marvelous creatures I found that they may be fascinating, unique and beautiful, but they are also very important to many ecosystems. This extremely low number of Belted Beauties is very alarming and if we don't act now then this terrible situation could occur for many other species.
Moths are beautiful. At the moment I am trying to educate some people on facebook who think they are ugly, dirty and fly "in your face". What drivel.
Moths are underrated!!
I am very passionate about noths. Whilst I back Green energy, I oppose the destructuioon of delicate habitiats
Other animals and plants will rely on this moth. Don't wreck our remaining pristine ecosystems.
Beause I wnated to help
Cables can be moved, extinct species can't be restored
I like moths!
Wildlife is really important to me, and I feel we have to do as much as poss to ensure its survival
The Belted Beauty is a Red Data Book species. It has an incredibly localised and fragile existence at this special site. The actual breeding site of the moth is very specific and I am sure the engineering works for the National Grid can slightly modify their plans to accommodate and safeguard this site and habitat of a rare species with a little bit of planning.
This site is so special that it must not be disturbed.
As usual too little regard is given to the destruction of natural habitat and to allow the extinction in England of a species is not on.
Say no to the loss of yet another species. Mankind is continually eroding our natural heritage.
I have never seen on of these moths and if this cabling goes ahead neither I nor future generations will get the chance to see them. We have a duty to look after our remaining species.
In yet another case of the risk of loosing more wildlife, signing is a necessity as at least some effort to prevent this happening once again.
We are fast losing all kinds of animal species in this country - once gone, they won't come back, and already our country life is seriously impoverished.
We need to be constantly on the alert for activity that contributes or may contribute to the destruction of our fantastic natural resources in this country. Every voice counts.
Wildlife is precious to our environment and landscapes
Saltmarshes are more effective at removing CO2 from the air then trees, however they are very fragile and easily damaged. Rare moths should be looked after, not have their habit destroyed.
Wildlife is continually being eroded, slowly we are heading to mass extermination of all wildlife in the race for financial gain
It is important to protect our native wildlife and this very rare species is a priority.
Save the moth!
wildlife needs our help
We must protect our wildlife
Even moths need protecting
I'll always give a friend a lift, human or otherwise.
Another species on the edge of extinction. This is environmental vandalism and for what? An uneconomic unviable wind farm !
Environmental tampering demands the best solutions not the cheapest.
Too much development is destroying our wildlife, we need to speak up to save it for generations of children to come.
Wind farms are a waste of time and money and detracting from the still, peaceful beautiful English landscape.
Why is wildlife protection not taken seriously in this country?
Short term gain is an unsustainable burden upon wildlife and the greater environment. Being at the top of the food chain we will be the last to feel the effects that we have placed on other species but will result in consequences impossible to repair and ironically a far greater financial burden for future generations.
"The State of Nature" and other reports show that our larger moths, in common with many other wildlife groups, are in freefall. This is a good example of an avoidable impact on a vulnerable, rare and iconic species. It should be strongly resisted and I therefore wholeheartedly support this campaign
too much of our countryside is disappearing due over-development of wind and solar paneling farms
Wind farms are supposed to be green energy and assisting conservation not unrestricted vandalism of our natural heritage
Time to make a stand against over development of our green and pleasant land!
Just love moths! Have returned from France where the moths were in abundance- took a pic of a similar looking moth on a bollard at a French petrol station!
We have to learn that man's interference has ongoing calamitous effects on Nature in general and in this case the poor Belted Beauty.
Because my Dad loves Moths
This is the last viable colony in England and just has to be saved!!!
Bio diversity must be protected and has a price beyond economics
For future generations to enjoy
This development will have massive impact on this already very threatened species
Ignorance will be no excuse for the loss of yet another species if these plans go ahead.
So much is being lost through thoughtlessness and inaction. Every species is precious and we must make sure they survive through positive actions.
We have to look after our natural environment
Want to help to protect a species even if I am not a resident of the locality where it is every little helps
For our children to enjoy and experience the diversity which I held dear all my life and this little moth is a true beauty.
When a moth has specific habitat requirements and a distribution as restricted as this one, it is a sign that we need to do all we can to protect it. This development could cause this moth to become extinct in England, and as this is preventable, we should be preventing it.
A small moth doesn't seem that important, but it is part of the pyramid of diversity. Once we allow the small bricks at the bottom to be chipped away, the whole thing will start to disintegrate.
Moth populations are in sharp decline and anything that can be done to help the decline in biodiversity in this country should be done.
What is the point of paying li-service to conservation issues if such an obvious travesty cannot be prevented by re-routing some cabling?
This is the one remaining site for this species in England and Wales. This makes the area special.
Extinction is for ever - the Belted Beauty needs protection
At the moment the government is backing green energy schemes but these are often impacting seriously on the environment
Let's not kid ourselves this in the name of providing green energy. This is big business bullying supported by a government that has no credibility with its record on nature conservation. Look to the appalling disaster of the intentional scrapping of the MCZ concept to see their real colours. Good luck Belted Beauty moths - you are going to need it.
Only one species - but another link in the chain that holds everything together!
We desperately need a mix of renewable energy technology but not at the expense of endangered species nor at the risk of other species becoming endangered
We need green energy but meaningful consultation is necessary to avoid destroying endangered species & important habitats in the process.
Not exactly green energy if it wipes out an endangered species.
Whilst sustainable energy sources are important their implementation should not destroy a species.
We shouldn't be damaging important sites for very rare species and certainly not for green energy.
We can't afford to lose species such as the Belted Beauty from our country.
We cannot afford to put an endangered species under more pressure. What a bad example that is to the rest of the world.
I've never seen one and if the little remnant population is wiped out I probably never will.
This is the one remaining site for this species in England and Wales. This makes the area special.
It is important that this iconic species is saved for future generations
Maintenance of biodiversity for a sustainable ecologically sound future.
Moths are essential to the biodiversity of our land and every species is precious.
Biodiversity is just as important as renewable energy. Why have "green" energy if it destroys the environment as much as fossil fuels? We need to develop green infrastructure, but there must be ways of doing this that don't damage the environment in other ways. Let's try not to lose more rare species.
By all means, renewable energy is a great thing, but so is preserving rare species. Please either change your methods or change the location.
Hopefully the Government willlive up to their claim of being the "Greenest Government Ever" and protect this colony, but I won't hold my breath.
The wet areas have often been unharmed by development, but here's an example where we are reaching into marshes for a questionable green project.
This is a rare and special moth that is under severe threat in a specialized habitat. Surely there are alternatives that do not cause damage to this site? Come on government live up to your green credentials that you promised.
I've seen wonderful species of rare animals and plants surviving in tiny pockets around the country. If we don't save them, they wil be lost for ever.
Windfarms are a political gesture by a government that won't face up to the real problems.
Development always gets put ahead of the environment, yet wasn't this going to be the greenest government ever?
Biodiversity must be put ahead of the practicality of routing a cable especially where an alternative is feasible
Because its vitally important not to keep losing little chunks of diversity from the environment - eventually if we 'chonk' at it enough there won;t be a 'whole' and the consequences for us and life on earth could be more serious than we'd like to think ..... This is the last site in England. We moth-ers are one of the guardians of biodiversity. We cannot afford to knowingly threaten the existence of a species in our country. please look again at alternative routes for the power cables.
Because they're worth it.
Such a beautiful area that needs preserving
Love the area
Once biodiversity is lost it has gone forever!
I believe it is important to save this moth in Lancashire.
The stability and health of our environment is dependent on a multitude of different species. Damaging any part of this has potentially unknown and significant consequences for us all. Please protect this endangered moth.
This population on saltmarsh, near Lancaster, Lancashire, is under threat from an offshore wind-farm cabling landfall route.
We need to preserve what we have left.
Because the belted beauty is such a threatened species and this construction could lead to this populations disappearance, it is clear that protecting biodiversity should take priority in this case.
Wildlife in this country always takes a back seat. Species like the Belted beauty with limited dispersal ability and the requirement of a dwindling specialist habitat need all the help we can give them and yet here are plans to do exactly the opposite.
Diversity of species is important to our planet. We must not carelessly let more species slip away.
One of Britains most threatened moths =- please help by signing
We must do all we can to save species under threat
Extinction is forever - find a better route for this cable that doesn't threaten to wipe out this beautiful species
This is a superb moth and it would be a tragedy if it is lost from this last English locality. We have lost too many species in this country already and it cannot be re-located with any chance of success.
There are less than 100 Belted Beauties in some years here so it is important to save this habitat.
We cannot afford to lose the last healthy population of this fascinating and iconic moth
Such a restricted species should not be lost through clumsy planning.
There must be other options than destroying the one remaining site of a species. If this was a pandas last remaining habitat we were talking about it would be inconceivable, but every species is important, not just the cute ones.
we need to protect all for our children and their children or there will be no wildlife at all what a sad place that would be
Although I live in Kent,I am from Lancashire and breed butterflies and moths as a hobby
Although from Ireland ,I feel all these losses will add up .
We need to protect the wildlife and nature that we still have. It is our responsibility.
This government is a disaster for the environment: they have to be forced to do the right thing every time.
Soon there is nothing left to save.
Our wildlife needs all the help it can get and it starts with habitat we must preserve our areas of open spaces.
The Belted Beauty is an extremely localised and vulnerable species - this development could have a major impact on its survival in Britain, particularly given that populations in north Wales seem to have recently gone extinct.
We've lost Hen Harriers, we can't lose anything else in Lancashire!
We can't afford to lose even the tiniest of creatures, we all need each other
Signed because these wildlife gems are being wiped out and future generations will miss out on their beauty. Keep on destroying and the human race will go next - not good. Belted Beauties are magnificent!
Any wildlife lost is a tragedy, especially at the expense of man
Because the wildlife should be considered more important than the company profits/savings. Money does not make the world go around, one day we might understand this.
We need to protect our Wildlife as it's a treasure which is very hard to bring back once it's gone. Protect and enjoy nature.
so much wildlife is being lost to all forms of development, this is yet another fight on our hands.
We need to protect the rare species we still have left - we've allowed too many to become extinct already.
To important to allow yet another EXTINcTION
This is just one small and maybe insignificant loss, but put a thousand of these together and we lose our wildlife in its entirety.
Vital that everything is done to preserve and protect rare species such as the Belted Beauty Moth. As a child my father told me how many more insects were around when he was young. At 61 I look back at how many more there were when I was young. What will be left for the next generation to compare? Wind farms are supposed to provide 'green' energy. This is not the case if the cables cause an extinction.
We need to value everyone of our native species with equality, not just animals of higher orders, a moth species is just as important as a white tailed sea eagle.
Because saving any species of butterfly and moth is important to me!
All wildlife is important and must be protected
We have lost so much wildlife,it is about time we started to save these last areas of habitat.
So much of our British wildlife is being destroyed by various means, lets try and keep this one alive and thriving.
Because I want my children to have the chance to enjoy our wildlife, and even a moth deserves our respect and protection!
As I get older I feel more and more strongly that it is vital to stand up and be counted, to put your money where your mouth is even for something as small as a rare moth How ironic that its last English stronghold is threatened by a 'green energy' development
I signed to support raising awareness of the on -costs of these developments. So many times the little things are completely overlooked.
Because I care.
Because "DONG Energy have confirmed in their planning application that they intend to route through the northern end of the saltmarsh habitat containing the Belted Beauty moth using underground cabling (HDD) on Route 2a." That is why I've signed. Our treatment of wildlife habitats is just not good enough in 21st C! The saltmarsh habitat in this area will likely be seriously affected.
The Belted Beauty moth needs to be saved & it needs our help! Thank you.
Because butterflies and moths are important.
I signed because the government needs to be reminded that life isn't all about commercial enterprise and gain for humans.
This site is crucial to the survival of the Belted Beauty in England. It has been driven out of other coastal sites it inhabited. PLEASE HELP PUT PRESSURE ON THE AUTHORITIES TO PROTECT THIS SITE IN LANCASHIRE.
I have just signed a petition to help the continued assistance for the Belted Beauty moth that is being threatened in Heysham.
