Welcome to our new catalogue for 2015/16

Queen of the Sky is Graffeg’s newest collaboration with internationally best-selling author and illustrator, Jackie Morris. The story of a peregrine falcon and the woman who brought her back to life, this is the tale of a bond which grew between a woman and a wild thing.

A Dylan Odyssey explores the worlds that inspired the words of Dylan Thomas. A compilation of 15 literary tours written by Wales’ best artists, authors and Dylan Thomas experts, this book is inspired by the unique events hosted by Literature Wales during the Dylan Thomas Centenary celebrations.

Celebrating the best of our beautiful country, Wilder Wales brings together a year in the Welsh countryside through

descriptions of some of the nation’s wildest and most atmospheric locations along with the plants and animals that bring those landscapes alive.

Calendars This year, Graffeg’s calendar collection is bigger than ever. Some of Twitter’s favourite cats, @MYSADCAT and @MYSMUGCAT have joined the collection, along with best-selling author Amanda Owen, also known as The Yorkshire Shepherdess.

Posters Originally published by the Arts Council of Wales in the 1970s, these beautiful Poster Poems are sparking a sense of nostalgia all around the country. Featuring poems from 6 of Wales’ best loved poets, Graffeg are very excited to be bringing these back!

William Wilkins Paintings and drawings ‘The paintings of William Wilkins are some of the most beautiful things that I have seen that have been made in my lifetime.’David Fraser Jenkins

A collection of paintings by William Wilkins CBE, one of Wales leading Fine Art exponents.

The work of William Wilkins is unique, both it the level of skill it displays and the length of time it occupies. Focusing upon the remarkable pointillist technique of the artist, this book represents the long and celebrated career of the artist together with the slow maturation of his style.

Born of months, even years, of painstaking creation each picture exudes both artistry and joy; a celebration of perception which merits exposure to the widest possible audience.

The pictures themselves are accessible both in terms of content and composition and will therefore appeal to a wide audience of art lovers.

Cat Walk

Cat Walk by Jackie MorrisAuthor, illustrator and photographer Jackie Morris explores her native Pembrokeshire in the company of her feline friends. Or rather, they explore the countryside while she tags along taking pictures.

Over 50 images with accompanying text tell the story of many walks with many cats. Challenging perceptions and rearranging priorities, Jackie’s insightful poetry and prose allows a glimpse of a world in which cat is king and nature its subject. Ordered and regulated by season, you will find that, although the landscape of Cat Walk may be familiar, what is seen is most certainly different.

‘In the old village that clings to the side of the hill the snow tumbles a deep carpet of white inside the ruined cottage. Winterbone branches of the bare twisted hawthorn clatter and rattle. The cats climb through tumbled stones of the fallen chimney fawr where once other cats had warmed their bodies by ancient firesides.’Jackie Morris

50 Buildings that built WalesThe bricks and mortar of national identityA photo-led compendium of 50 buildings and structures that helped create the Wales we know today. Written by architectural historian Greg Stevenson, with pictures by acclaimed photographer David Wilson, the book explores the idea of identity as established by a nation’s buildings. Alongside the obvious world-class historic and contemporary buildings are a selection of lesser-known but influential structures that have either played a significant part in Wales’ history or which are representative of an influential type of building. There are even a couple of buildings outside Wales, a couple of lost buildings, and a building that moves every year.

Sections include:• Forming the Nation• Building the culture and identity of Wales• Building the economy of Wales• Keeping the language alive• Education and Religion• Contemporary Wales, shaping our future

Queen of the Sky For the love of a wild thing

The amazing story of Ffion Rees and the peregrine falcon she rescued from the sea off the remote coast of west Wales. It’s the story of how Ffion nursed the Falcon back to life and back to the wild, and about the bond which grew between the two.

The story is told by international author and illustrator Jackie Morris, a friend of Ffion, who also lives in this remote part of Pembrokeshire, west Wales. Jackie describes the risks, triumphs and above all the trust which developed between the pair and which formed the basis of the falcon’s path to back to health and back to the freedom of the wild.

Christmas Day

Boxing Day Bank Holiday

A spell of settled weather is desirable during these now shorter days but December can bring relentless wind and rain from the west. Sheep become susceptible to blind illness, a contagious infection which will temporarily render them sightless. The moor with its perilous drops and raging streams is a very dangerous place to be when blind. Prompt treatment and sometimes hospitalisation ensure a quick recovery.

A landscape unchanged over the centuries. The desolate windswept open moorland is an inhospitable place during the winter months. The only sign of man’s presence is the occasional outlying barn or fold used for the storage of hay and the gathering of the flocks during a storm. The barns, walls and folds were built long ago and that they remain to this day is testament to the skills of the builder.

The meadows are now cleared of sheep and left to grow a crop of hay. The traditional herb-rich wildflower meadows will provide the winter feed for the flock. The snow and lashing gales of winter are the cause of many gaps in the dry stone walls and it is now that time is spent repairing the boundaries and making them stockproof.

As summer draws to a close thoughts turn to the sheep sales, whilst for the children the return to school looms large. The moor looks at its finest as the heather blooms provide a wash of colourful purple and, bathed in the softer autumnal light, there can surely be no finer place.

Amanda Owen is a shepherdess, farmer’s wife, mother to seven children, a passionate photographer and now a Sunday Times bestselling author.

The bleakness and desolation is felt most keenly during the harshest and most severe of winter months. Snow, ice and blizzards mean that the ewes are entirely reliant upon the shepherd providing their sustenance. The difficult terrain may involve hay bales having to be carried on foot to the furthest outlying flocks. The unborn lambs are beginning to require more nutrition, so it is vital to keep the ewes in peak condition and hay will be supplemented with high protein pellets.

The sheep must be sheared, gathered down from the moor and held in the folds. They are then briefly separated from their lambs until it is time for them to part with their wool. After only a few minutes in the hands of the shearer, they will be reunited with their lambs and their fleeces packed away into sacks. A wormer dose is given, the flock mark reapplied and they return to the relative peace of the moor.

Ram sales are a time of great excitement for the hill shepherd as everyone, both buyers and sellers converge at the auction mart. A time to showcase the very best of your breeding stock. Many hours of preparation will have been spent in order to have the rams looking their very best.

Spring comes late in the hills. The ewes come down from the moor and into the lower pastures to lamb. Most of the ewes will give birth to a single fine healthy lamb unaided as nature intended, born outside in the shelter of a dry stone wall, under the wind. The newly born lamb takes no harm and will soon be on his feet, suckled and running at his mother’s side.

Sheep must be dry in order to be sheared. The wool will heat up, rot and become worthless if packed away damp so great care must be taken that the sheep are clean and dry. Gritty fleeces can quickly blunt shears and make the task much harder for the shearer.

As summer draws to a close, it is a busy time for a shepherd. Flocks are gathered in, lambs weaned and perhaps a select few sheep will be taken to the local show. It is a chance to showcase your animals, as with sale time fast approaching, all eyes will be looking out for who has the best sheep in the district.

Un funud fach cyn elo’r haul o’r wybren, Un funud fwyn cyn delo’r hwyr i’w hynt,I gofio am y pethau angofiedig Ar goll yn awr yn llwch yr amser gynt.

Fel ewyn ton a dyr ar draethell unig, Fel cân y gwynt lle nid oes glust a glyw,Mi wn eu bod yn galw’n ofer arnom − Hen bethau angofiedig dynol ryw.

Camp a chelfyddyd y cenhedloedd cynnar, Anheddau bychain a neuaddau mawr,Y chwedlau cain a chwalwyd ers canrifoedd, Y duwiau na ŵyr neb amdanynt nawr.

A geiriau bach hen ieithoedd diflanedig, Hoyw yng ngenau dynion oeddynt hwy,A thlws i’r clust ym mharabl plant bychain, Ond tafod neb ni eilw arnynt mwy.

O, genedlaethau dirifedi daear, A’u breuddwyd dwyfol a’u dwyfoldeb brau,A erys ond tawelwch i’r calonnau Fu gynt yn llawenychu a thristáu?

Mynych ym mrig yr hwyr, a mi yn unig, Daw hiraeth am eich nabod chwi bob un;A oes a’ch deil o hyd mewn Cof a Chalon, Hen bethau angofiedig teulu dyn?

Fern Hill

Dylan Thomas

Now as I was young and easy under the apple boughsAbout the lilting house and happy as the grass was green, The night above the dingle starry, Time let me hail and climb Golden in the heydays of his eyes,And honoured among wagons I was prince of the apple townsAnd once below a time I lordly had the trees and leaves Trail with daisies and barley Down the rivers of the windfall light.

And as I was green and carefree, famous among the barnsAbout the happy yard and singing as the farm was home, In the sun that is young once only, Time let me play and be Golden in the mercy of his means,And green and golden I was huntsman and herdsman, the calvesSang to my horn, the foxes on the hills barked clear and cold, And the sabbath rang slowly In the pebbles of the holy streams.

All the sun long it was running, it was lovely, the hayFields high as the house, the tunes from the chimneys, it was air And playing, lovely and watery And fire green as grass. And nightly under the simple starsAs I rode to sleep the owls were bearing the farm away,All the moon long I heard, blessed among stables, the nightjars Flying with the ricks, and the horses Flashing into the dark.

And then to awake, and the farm, like a wanderer whiteWith the dew, come back, the cock on his shoulder: it was all Shining, it was Adam and maiden, The sky gathered again And the sun grew round that very day.So it must have been after the birth of the simple lightIn the first, spinning place, the spellbound horses walking warm Out of the whinnying green stable On to the fields of praise.

And honoured among foxes and pheasants by the gay houseUnder the new made clouds and happy as the heart was long, In the sun born over and over, I ran my heedless ways, My wishes raced through the house high hayAnd nothing I cared, at my sky blue trades, that time allowsIn all his tuneful turning so few and such morning songs Before the children green and golden Follow him out of grace.

Nothing I cared, in the lamb white days, that time would take meUp to the swallow thronged loft by the shadow of my hand, In the moon that is always rising, Nor that riding to sleep I should hear him fly with the high fieldsAnd wake to the farm forever fled from the childless land.Oh as I was young and easy in the mercy of his means, Time held me green and dying Though I sang in my chains like the sea.

Let’s go to Barry Island, Maggie fach,And give all the kids one day by the sea,And sherbet and buns and paper hats,And a rattling ride on the Figure Eight,We’ll have tea on the sands, and rides on the donkeys,And sit in the evening with the folk of Cwm Rhondda,Singing the sweet old hymns of PantycelynWhen the sun goes down beyond the rocky islands.Come on, Maggie fach, or the train will be goneThen the kids will be howling at home all day,Sticky with dirt and gooseberry jam.Leave the washing alone for today, Maggie fach,And put on your best and come out to the sunAnd down to the holiday sea. We’ll carry the sandwiches in a big brown bagAnd leave our troubles behind for a dayWith the chickens and the big black tipsAnd the rival soup-kitchens, quarrelling like hell.Come, Maggie fach, with a rose on your breastAnd an old Welsh tune on your little red lips,And we’ll all sing together in the Cardiff trainDown to the holiday sea.

Return to Cardiff‘Hometown’; well, most admit an affection for a city:grey, tangled streets I cycled on to school, my first cigarettein the back lane, and, fool, my first botched love affair.First everything. Faded torments; self–indulgent pity.

The journey to Cardiff seemed less a return than a raidon mislaid identities. Of course the whole locus smaller:the mile-wide Taff now a stream, the castle not as in some black, gothic dream, but a decent sprawl, a joker’s toy façade.

Unfocused voices in the wind, associations, clues, odds and ends, fringes caught, as when, after the doctor quit,a door opened and I glimpsed the white, enormous faceof my grandfather, suddenly aghast with certain news.

Unable to define anything I can hardly speak, and still I love the place for what I wanted it to beas much as for what it unashamedly is now for me, a city of strangers, alien and bleak.

Illusory, too, that lost dark playground after rain, the noise of the trams, gunshots in what they once called Tiger Bay.Only real this smell of ripe, damp earth when the sun comes out,a mixture of pungencies, half exquisite and half plain.

Unable to communicate I’m easily betrayed, uneasily diverted by mere sense reflectionslike those anchored waterscapes that wander, alter, in the Taff, hour by hour, as light slants down a different shade.

No sooner than I’d arrived the other Cardiff had gone, smoke in the memory, these but tinned resemblances, where the boy I was not and the man I am notmet, hesitated, left double footsteps, then walked on.

Food Wales – a second helping

In this book Colin Pressdee revisits Wales to find the best places to eat, taste and buy local produce and find the rich diversity of foods from the countryside, coastline and sea. He seeks out those who are committed to preserving the environment using ethical farming and fishing methods to sustain the production of the countryside and stocks from the sea for the future. He finds a host of natural and organic foods and many new local farmers’ markets, and companies selling online. He meets genuine producers committed to sustainability, and chefs using naturally farmed, fished and foraged foods in their true season.

‘These are powerful images. They remind us that rural Wales has a stark and demanding beauty.’ GRIFF RHYS JONES

The most magnificent photographs – which manage to capture the unkempt beauty of Wales in a way that is both old and new, ancient and modern. DYLAN MOORE, WALES ARTS REVIEW (AUGUST 2012)

A collection of over 150 black and white images by noted Welsh landscape photographer David Wilson.

In this, his second book, David takes the reader on a visual journey through Wales; from Snowdonia in the north to Gower in the south, Pembrokeshire in the west to Hay-on-Wye in the east. With 36 locations each forming the subject of its own photographic essay, David’s exploration of his art captures the landscapes of Wales in a new, exciting and evocative way.

Breathtaking, enchanting and challenging, this book, quite simply, brings Wales to life.
