GRAFENWOEHR/VILS-ECK. e blessing of the graves and the commemoration of the ancestors was the center of at-tention for the participants of the cemetery visits in the former villages on the training area. e cemetery visitors also learned new and historic things about Rose Barracks, Haag and Lan-genbruck.

Chaplain Dietmar Schindler from Vilseck said the prayers and the intercessions and blessed the graves in the former home-towns. Garrison spokesperson Franz Zeilmann, who arranges the visits every year, informed the participants during the visits about the latest developments. He said that there is still const-ruction on Rose Barracks. New buildings for the Air Force and the UAV unit are being built, along with a UAV aireld. Stry-ker vehicles and training troops of the 2d Cavalry Regiment

could be observed on the way to Haag.

Werner Stubenvoll, who lled in for Anton Englhardt, provided information about Haag. His great-grandfather Johann Stu-benvoll wrote the Haag Chro-nicles which have just recently been published in one book.

Haag used to be a part of the Hopfenohe parish until the vil-lage, located at the old trading and state route 85, and its church St. Veit became an independent parish in 1876.

Carpenter of the Cemetery’s Cross Erhard und Margarete Stümp

from Grafenwoehr also visited the cemetery. e roots of their family are located in Bergfried, a small hamlet which belonged to Haag. In 1992, Erhard‘s father Georg Stümp actively suppor-ted the restoration of the cemete-ry. A trained carpenter, Stümp made the cross that stands on the cemetery today.

TRAINING AREA TRAINING AREAe cemetery is maintained by the German Army, informed Gerald Morgenstern, author of the book “Grafenwoehr Trai-ning Area, yesterday – today“, the visitors. A chapter in the book covers the recent history of the cemetery with restoration, maintenance and the visits to the graves.

e name Langenbruck (long bridge) goes back to the long bridge across the Frankenohe river, Stubenvoll explained. wei-ter. A split granite stone with a cross at the former location of Langenbruck’s St. Wolfgang Church and the cemetery still re-mind us of the village today. e Langenbruck cemetery, which is located on a hill in the forest of Rose Barracks, was maintained by US Sgt. Abraham immediate-ly after the village was disbanded and, therefore, is well-preserved.Chaplain Schindler, next to him Werner Stubenvoll. He provided historic facts about Haag and Langenbruck. His grand-

father was the last person to be buried on Haag Cemetery.

Erhard Stümpfl and his wife Margarete placed flowers and grave lights on the graves of his forefathers. Stümpfl‘s father Georg, a native of Bergfried, made the cemetery cross that stands on the old cemetery. US spokesperson Franz Zeilmann (right) organizes the visits to the cemeteries every year.

TRAINING AREA

GRAFENWOEHR/HOHEN-FELS. Col. Curtis Carson, chief of staff and deputy commander of the US Army’s Joint Multi-national Training Command ( JMTC), gave a broad overview of the facilities and activities of the command during a press con-ference about the exercise “Saber Junction.“

Grafenwoehr Training Area (233 square kilometers) and Hohenfels Training Area (163 square kilome-ters) are the heart of JMTC, which is commanded by Col. Bryan L. Rudacille. During training exer-cises, the command closely coope-rates with the US commands in Heidelberg and Kaiserslautern as well as with the Special Operations Command of the German Armed Forces in Pfullendorf. e facilities in the Oberpfalz region are also available to the US forces in Vi-cenza, where the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team is stationed. e simulation center ( JMSC), the NCO Academy, the Training Support Activity Europe (TSAE) in Grafenwoehr, the Combat Arms Training Center (CATC) in Vils-eck, the Joint Multinational Readi-ness Center ( JMRC) in Hohenfels are the command’s training facili-ties, whose headquarters is located directly beneath the Water Tower in Grafenwoehr.

JMTC oers American and inter-national Soldiers as well as allied partners the opportunity to train in an environment characterized by demanding, complex and real-time battleelds at various locations all over Europe, emphasized Carson. e JMTC chief of sta added that annually about 42,000 Sol-diers, family members, German and American civilian employees, including the training and rota-ting troops that train daily on the training areas and in the JMTC training facilities are supported by JMTC.

GRAFENWOEHR/HOHEN-FELS. In October, 1,800 Soldiers from 19 nations trained with “crossed sabers“ (Saber Junction) in the Oberpfalz region. e Sol-diers practiced the case of emer-gency on an exercise area of about 2,000 square kilometers between the Grafenwoehr and Hohenfels Training Areas. “Saber Junction“ was the largest exercise held by the US Army in Europe since 1989.

“It is the largest and most complex exercise of the US Army taking place in Germany since the `Re-forger´ maneuvers,“ said Col. Curtis Carson, chief of sta and deputy commander of the US Army’s Joint Multinational Training Command JMTC). Carson and his sta wel-comed media representatives in the JMTC simulation center. Reporters from all over Germany showed in-terest in “Saber Junction.“ Carson and his employees explained the special characteristics of JMTC with the Grafenwoehr and Ho-henfels Training Areas and their special training facilities. Soldiers cannot only train their skills on the computers in the high-tech simu-lation center in Grafenwoehr, they can also practice their battle skills outdoors at the Joint Multinatio-nal Readiness Center ( JMRC), the command’s battle preparation center in Hohenfels. Everything is being done to send the Soldiers optimally trained on their dangerous missions.

Training outside the training areas is something special. About 2,000 square kilometers, with the excep-tions of the towns and nature pro-tection areas, served as a realistic training area in October. Separated into several battle groups, the 19 partner nations including Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, France, Italy, Slo-venia, Lithuania, Poland, Sweden, and the Ukraine trained with the Americans with “crossed sabers.” e German Army participated in the maneuver with the Oberpfalz

Brigade and its Leopard tanks stationed in Pfreimd. Wheeled vehicles, tanks, artillery howitzers, ghter jets and helicopters were deployed. Maneuver ammunition, pyrotechnical and fog equipment were used to create a realistic war scenario. e main forces of the “blue battle group“ were provided by the 2d Cavalry Regiment (2CR) from Vilseck, whose Soldiers are equipped with Stryker vehicles. e regiment is equipped with ten dif-ferent specications of the Stryker eight-wheel-vehicle, ranging from

rst aid vehicle to a mobile gun sys-tem that carries a 105 mm cannon.

e regiment’s commander, Col. Keith Barclay, had put up his tactical operations center near Kleinfalz ad-jacent to Edelsfeld on B-85. During the interview with the journalists, he enthusiastically talked about the “fantastic training.“ Like his Sol-diers, he wore sensors on his helmet and equipment. With the help of maneuver lasers on the weapons, they allow for the display of real hits by the enemy.

JMTC Lt. Col. Curtis Taylor was one of the evaluators of the cavalry regiment and judged their battle and tactical skills. Laptop, Bea-mer and digital maps have replaced the old paper maps in the tactical operations center. e cooperation between the nations and the expe-riences made during the exercise in the Oberpfalz region are another step towards multinational training to avoid future threats. at was the goal that JMTC wanted to achieve with the “Saber Junction“ exercise.

Every year the Speicherdorf sports arena turns into Santa’s workshop for one day with all kinds of pretty gifts and deli-cious specialties. is year, it is Sunday, November 25. At 1100 a.m. the gates of the sports arena will open for the visitors who come from near and far to see what about 35 local exhibitors have to oer.

Everything from children‘s books to candles and home-made lunch meat is available, giving you great ideas for this year’s Christmas presents.

Here you can nd handma-de Christmas tree ornaments and nativity scenes. Self-knit-ted socks and tasty farmhouse bread belong to the variety of goods sold here, just like deli-cious honey and beautiful advent arrangements.

To shorten the time until San-ta Claus arrives, children have the opportunity to cast candles, allowing them to be creative. And if you are exhausted from your shopping tour you can relax right there with a hot cup of coee or mulled wine and delicious homemade cakes.

Each year, the Speichers-dorf Christmas market is very popular with locals and visi-tors and it seems like nobody in the community wants to miss this nice opportunity to meet with friends and neigh-bors and to buy some really unique handmade presents for their loved ones.

If I have aroused your curiosi-ty now, then why not make a pre-Christmas family trip to Speichersdorf this year and have a closer look at Santa‘s workshop.

On October 28, the VFW Tow-er Post 10692 hosted a wonder-ful BBQ with two very special guests. John Strout, VFW Junior Vice Commander-in-Chief and

Bob Wallace, VFW Washington Oce Executive Director had come all the way from Brussels to Grafenwoehr to enjoy deli-cious potato and pasta salads,

hamburgers , steaks, deviled eggs, and baked potatoes with the members of the VFW To-wer Post in a relaxed and cozy atmosphere.

ey came to listen to the mem-bers’ concerns and needs and tried to nd solutions and advice for problems. eir visit provided them with a better understanding of the value of our garrison and its sub-ordinate units in connection with the training and facilities available here. ey also gained rst-hand knowledge of U.S. military and diplomatic activities within the USAG Grafenwoehr’s area of ope-ration. ey were interested in the quality of life and training here. ey had own in from Washing-ton D.C to Brussels, where they had received some briengs from NATO. From there, they had come directly to Grafenwoehr to meet with local VFW members and to enjoy a great homemade BBQ.

eir visit ended with a tour of the garrison, the housing areas, the single soldiers barracks, main post with the PX and commissary, dining facilities, the Joint Multi-national Simulations Center, and range operations before they hea-ded on to Stuttgart the next day.

Count Burkhard Beissel of Gym-nich and Countess Cornelia Beis-sel of Gymnich once again extend an invitation to visit Guteneck Castle for a medieval Christmas Fair. It is the seventh time this year that Guteneck Castle will be the picturesque site of a historical romantic Christmas fair. During the four Advent weekends in De-cember – on Saturdays and Sun-days; and on the third and fourth weekend on Fridays, too - you may be enchanted by the romantic at-mosphere and taken back to the days of the Middle Ages.

You will have the opportunity to witness various types of ancient artistry and crafts such as: Wood carving, torch making, shar-pening of knives, felt and cloth production, carpet weaving, lace making, glass painting, leather em-bossing, broom and rake making, saddle construction, pottery, bread baking, shoe making, paper proces-sing, book binding, black smithing and many more.

Several groups of knights will allow you to gain an insight into life in historical camps. Be sure to arrive thirsty and with a good appetite as there will be plenty of booths with food and beverages.

Heated areas with a seating ca-pacity of 800 to 1,000 people are available for your comfort. Parking spaces for cars and busses are available nearby. A shuttle bus service will run every thirty minutes between the Nabburg train station - the Nordgauhalle parking lot in Nabburg – the commuter car park near A 93 and the castle. Cost for the round trip is € 2.e shuttle bus is free of charge for visitors who arrive by train and show their train ticket. Vi-

sitors who arrive by car should leave A 93 and A 6 respectively at the „Nabburg“ exit and drive in the direction of Oberviechtach. Shortly after the village Unteraich, turn right to Guteneck. Follow the signs to “Schloss Guteneck.” e solid surface parking area holds approximately 1,000 cars. Parking fee per car is € 2.

(djd/pt). A lot of concentration is required from dirvers when driving during the winter. Slip-pery roads, fog, humidity and darkness require he driver’s full attention. It is not only annoying but can also be dan-gerous if the windows steam up in such a situation and the driver‘s visibility of traffic events is impaired. That often leads to missing a pedestrian or bike rider. It is easy to explain why windows turn humid in winter: The air in the vehicle contains steam which settles on cold surfaces.

Drying pillows: Clear view without humidity

Pre-warming the car is the most convenient way to achieve a clear view but it is not envi-ronmentally friendly. German Trac Law explicitly forbids to warm up the car while parking because it causes unnecessary noise and exhaust fumes. Ano-ther alternative is wiping the windows by hand. But this often leads to cleaning streaks which might blind the driver during direct sunlight.

Special car drying pillows are an economical solution and provide for a clearer view and with that for more long-term security. ey prevent humidi-ty inside the car which causes foggy windows. Permanently placed in the car, they lter the water vapor out of the air and store it in the granulates they are lled with.

Practical and environmentally friendly

is device is not only practi-cal, it is also environmentally

friendly. e pillows are odorless and can be reused many times. One pillow can store about 600 milliliters of uid before it should be dried. To dry it,

the pillow should be put on a radiator after about six weeks of use.e pillow’s upper side is made of nonwoven fabric which is

tangibly wet and a bottom side made out of foil which prevents the transfer of water to the sur-face it is placed on.

More visibility regardless of the weatherSPORTS
