If those walls could talk, theywould have a lot to tell.Nowon-der since the history-laden houseis already 550 years old.The buil-ding in question is the Grafen-woehr town hall which will sooncelebrate its 550th anniversary.

The town hall dates back to the15th century, namely to 1462 andwas built in the style of the lateGothic period. During its earlyyears, prison cells were located inthe basement. On the first floorwas the town’s bread store, theapartment of the town servant, later also the apartment of thenight watchman and variousvaults used to store the town’sinventory. The large city council’soffice and the city register werelocated on the second floor anda large dance floor on the thirdfloor.Over time, those rooms werechanged in many different ways ,mainly because of the move of theschool’s classrooms to the townhall in 1859.That was necessarybecause the establishment of thetraining area led to a significantincrease in inhabitants and stu-dents. To be able to provide the

necessary room for the students, the town hall was remodeled andthree classrooms were built.

Since there was no more room leftat the town hall, the constructionof a separate school building hadbeen considered since 1911.Thenecessary financing had been se-cured but there was a controversialdiscussion about the location.Theold town and the new suburbscompeted for the new school. In 1913, it was decided that theschool would be built near the citypublic works (today the location

of the Stadtapotheke). Detailedplans were made but not realizedbecause of the outbreak ofWorldWar I. Finally, in 1935 groundwas broken for the new schoolsouth of the cemetery. On Sep-tember 26, 1936, in time for thenew school year, was opened and25 years of space shortage came

to an end. Afterwards, the townhall was renovated and remodeled.Nearly 60 years later, in 1982/83,the town hall was completely re-novated and got his current look.Since then, the mayor’s office anda part of the city administrationare located there.

ESCHENBACH. It’s in his ge-nes. He inherited the skill ofglass art making from his fatherand his interest in music fromhis godfather.Wolfgang Höllerwas born in Eschenbach wherehe grew up surrounded by art.

The 55-year-old choose Sou-thern France as the location forhis art studies where he alsowent on tour as the composerand pianist for a rock band. Butthe Eschenbach native also wonseveral prizes at art exhibitionsin Paris and Southern France. But after 20 years, the globe-trotter returned to Bavaria withhis wife and two sons, wherehe started focusing on glass art. However, he also enjoys paintingpictures.

A splendid example of Höller‘sglass art can be seen at the ce-metery chapel in Grafenwoehr.Other examples of his workare the outdoor area of theEschenbach senior citizens‘home, several chapels such asthe “Brigittenpark“ in Pegnitz,“the kindergarten in Warmen-steinach and the mosaic at theMarienplatz in Eschenbach.

Together with Professor Wolf-gang Mahlke he decorated seve-ral churches and kindergartensin Nürnberg and Würzburg withart. Currently, his paintings canbe seen in an exhibition at a mo-ated castle near Cham. “The OldMan’s Dream“ or the “Villageof the Lost Souls“ are titles of

some of his paintings. After hislong stay in France, the artist hadoriginally intended to only returnto his Upper Palatine home forabout three years. “Now it’s tur-ned into 19 years,“ says Höllerwho would like to go to Ireland

and the Brittany region of Franceone of these days.

About his work Höller says that„art means touching the soul.“For him, it also continues to bean attempt at self-discovery. And

he adds: “Like the branches ofa tree reaching for the sky, withthe right to confuse myself andothers, experiencing light for ashort time – what else can lifegive to us?“

The Bärnau-Tachov HistoryPark in Bärnau, TirschenreuthCounty, is one of Germany‘slargest outdoor archeologicalmuseums and has been underconstruction since 2010. Fol-lowing a ten-year planning anda one-year construction phase, the museum opened on July 30,2011. Visitors are invited to ex-perience a journey through timeinto everyday life from the 9th tothe 13th century.

On their tour, visitors can vi-sit a Slavic settlement from the8th/9th century. It is an exampleof the settlements in this regionand Bärnau‘s location in a borderregion where Germanic and Sla-vic tribes have met for centuries.Shown are residential buildingssuch as the ditch house, half-builtinto the ground, and large, one-story wooden houses but also es-sential utility buildings such as theclay dome oven used for bakingbread.

The heart and the landmark of thehistory park is the motte castlefrom the 11th century. The de-fense tower with a palisade wasbuilt on an artificial mountain andtowers over the entire area – a po-werful landmark of the new rulerswho built these administrativecenters in large towns, along roadsand border crossings to reorganizetheir territories. The 13th centu-ry Late Middle Ages settlementcombines known elements withnew developments. The housesare still made of wood but thefirst buildings with beams, theforerunners of our half-timberedbuildings, are built and specialutility buildings appear. The art ofconstruction is no longer definedby tribal origin but by the rural orearly urban environment.

The history park is an interactivemuseum that provides the visitorwith an authentic, entertainingpicture of the Middle Ages. Since

the museum continues to grow, visitors can also watch the cons-truction of additional houses.Vi-sitors can also participate in manyactivities.Whether it is javelin orbread baking, the constructionof clay ovens or the braiding offences – the everyday activities ofthe Middle Ages are at your fin-ger tips. At the end of their tour, visitors can relax in the restaurantand try the special museum beer.

12,500 visitors used the opportu-nity to visit the 6.5 hectare-largeoutdoor museum during its firstseason despite the fact that themuseum is still under construc-tion. The border-crossing EU-project runs until 2013. 14 addi-tional buildings will be added tothe eight existing ones. This year,a church and a medieval lodgingfacility will be built among otherthings. A lot is also being builtoutside the museum. Playgroundsfor children, a restaurant whichwill be finished in spring and anexhibition on the first floor of thevisitors‘ information center in thewinter months. Another key pro-ject is the improvement of theGolden Road to Tachov for use byhikers and tourists. The 4.4 milli-

on Euro project is financed withfunds from the EU, the BavarianCultural Fund, the Governmentof the Upper Palatinate,Tirschen-reuth County and the city of Bär-nau. Nevertheless, the museumassociation “Via Carolina“ mustnot only invest thousands of hoursof volunteer work but also gene-rate half a million Euro in fundsto finance its share of the project.

All in all, the history park is anexample of how visitor highlights

can be developed outside the maintourism regions with the necessa-ry courage and determination.Themuseum association “Via Caro-lina,“ led by its chairman AlfredWolf and the project office areexcited about the acknowledge-ment the project received whenreceiving the ADAC TourismAward Bavaria. The award is amotivation and an incentive tocontinue to support the projectand the region in the future.

GRAFENWOEHR.After the firsthymns of praise about the success-ful season had died down after lastyear’s advancement into the Bava-rian State League, the officials ofthe Griffins as well as the playersfound themselves in the positionof having to answer some seriousquestions. Will the next season beas successful? Will we always havethe necessary number of players?Howwellwill theother teamsplay?

As a result, a lot of diligence wasput into the preparation for the newseason. The coaches organized threetraining games against the Nürn-berg Rams (2s Federal League), theBamberg Bears (Bavaria League)and the Bamberg Phantoms (Pre-paration League). Additionally, atraining camp that demanded a lotfrom the players was conducted overEaster. But the hardwork during thepre-season was well worth it for theGriffins.

Despite the fact that the first gameagainst the Rosenheim Rebels waslost, it was a very tight result with31:30.And if you take into conside-ration that they have not lost a singlegame so far and are the unchallengedleader of the league, then this is not abad start for the youngGrafenwoehrteam.

However, the team was determinedto do better in the second game.Thistime, theMunisiers fromTraunreut, last year‘s opponents in the final game

who also advanced, were guest in theUpper Palatinate.Last year, only oneof two games could be won so it wasclear that it would be a close call es-pecially since it is known that theteam fromTraunreut always studiesits opponents and comes to a gamewell-prepared.

But this time, they obviously did notpreparewell enough because theGrif-finswon 18:0.But the result does notreveal that the game was once againa very close one andwas not decided

until the end of the third quarter.Thedefense, however, did a great job, notallowing any scores whichmight turnout to be an advantage at the end ofthe season when the final scores arecomputed.

So after two games, theGriffins haveplaces themselves in the midfield ofthe league. But head coach JamesMiller has a positive outlook intothe future. “The team can achieve alot.If wewin the next games, wemayplace first in the end.“ In the playoffs,

theGrafenwoehr team could end uphaving to play against Aschaffen-burg or Schweinfurt. Currently, thetwo Franconian teams dominate theNorthernGroup of the State League.

If youwant to experience theGriffinslive and support themduring a homegame, then come to theGrafenwoehrSportpark on June 2.Food and beve-rages are available and the Griffins‘cheerleaders willmake sure youwon’tbe bored during half-time.

A traditional festival is the an-nual event highlight for manytowns in Eastern Bavaria. InNabburg that festival is the me-dieval market which was estab-lished in 1990. Every two years,it attracts thousands of visitorsand in 202 it will be celebratedagain.

A different world is awaits youbehind those entry points. Tra-desmen, jugglers, falconers, fire-eaters, slipper makers, knife grin-ders, fishwives and many otherhistorically dressed characterswill cross the paths of the visitors.

The sound of swords is heard inthe Old Town and jugglers andplayers compete to attract thevisitors interest, and the smellof roasted beef fills the streetsand alleys of the more than athousand years old town. Thevery family friendly entrance feecollected by the organizers is 3Euro per day. Children ages 12and below are free.

Nabburg’s Old Town with its pic-torial backdrop and many historicbuildings is the ideal location forthis “spectaculum“ and contribu-tes significantly to the successof the market. That can also besaid about the city’s clubs whosemembers, dressed in historicalcostumes, participate as actors orvisitors and fully identify them-selves with this event.
