How ideas takes shape

he idea of enclosing a thin graphite lead in a wooden casing is several hundred years old; it

was not new when my ancestors founded a pencil factory in 1761. But my great-great-grandfather Baron Lothar von Faber, who took over the family firm in 1839, was the first to turn the pencil into a genuine quality product – and the world’s first brand-name writing implement.

He laid down standards for the length, diameter, and hardness of pencils; standards which apply to this day. He also created a series of fascinating products which continue to set an example of simplicity and design.

My grandfather, Count Alexander zu Castell-Rüdenhau-sen carried on this tradition. The Faber-Castell company, which takes its name from my grand father’s marriage to Lothar von Faber’s granddaughter Ottilie, is not only the old-est manufacturer of wood-cased pen cils, but also the world’s best-known name in graphite and colour pencils. And they

still look very much as they did 150 years ago.

I saw it as a personal challenge to re discover the prod-ucts of a past age, and to bring them up to date with timeless design and the use of modern techno logy. This idea, based on selected writ ing implements made by my ancestors, took shape in the “Graf von Faber-Castell” collection. For me it embodies the luxury of simplicity, a harmon ious combin at-i on of selected materials, æsthetic looks, and a high degree of functionalism.

aber-Castell has repeatedly set standards in deve-loping and manufacturing writing implements. The

Perfect Pencil in the Graf von Faber-Castell Collection demonstrates that in an impressive way. Part of the pleasure of writing and sketching with a classic pencil is that it should always have a sharp point. But where best to keep the sharpener? The Perfect Pencil solves that problem both simply and ele gantly: just where it’s needed, on the pencil itself, built into a protective cap that also serves to extend the length of the pencil. With a replaceable eraser under the end cap, everything one needs for writing, sharpening and making corrections is ever at the ready in its most compact form. The Perfect Pencil is available either platinum-plated or in a sterling silver version.

Graf von Faber-Castell pencils are characterized by their at-tractive ribbed surface and an engraved silver end cap, or an ex-ceptional guilloche pattern. The attractively shaped round eraser with platinum-plated grips allows smudge-free rubbing out. Each of the other accessories in the Graf von Faber-Castell Collection fulfils its task perfectly.

Thanks to their clear, restrained design the desk accessories from the Graf von Faber-Castell Collection adapt to their surroundings – and yet immediately reveal that they are something special. Highly polished metal parts and grained calfskin leather sheaths with hand-stitched seams set these desk accessories apart.

Selected Italian calfskin is used for the leather accessories. Tough but supple, calfskin is a material that lends itself to fine crafting and is highly durable.

he feeling conveyed by a noble fountain pen with a gold nib remains incomparable. The slender shape and good balance of the Classic propelling pencil and ball

pen mean that they sit comfortably in the hand. Well engineered mechanisms and robust details, such as the spring-loaded clip made of solid metal, ensure that the joy of using them is as time-less as the design.

ach of the Classic Anello writing implements is an eye-catcher and a stylish accessory. Fine rings link the individual segments of the barrel and give the

series its name: “Anello” is Italian for ring. Fascinating con-trasts and noble materials distinguish the different Classic Anello models. The barrel consists of several segments made of either ebony, precious resin or titanium with fine platinum-plated rings between them. Perfection to the touch as well as the eye.

The Anello Gold writing implements have a barrel made of matt, gold-plated segments, separated by delicate, gold-plated metal rings resulting in a gleaming contrast.

uilloche Ciselé, the new collection of writing implements, is presented in dark anthracite with

a herringbone pattern. The deep, matt surfaces combined with the shimmering engraving create a unique and appealing look. The high polish rhodium-plated cap, end piece and grip contrast effectively with the engraved barrel – a refined combination which gives the Guilloche series its elegance and understated design.

The Chevron variant in the Guilloche series provides an interest-ing combination of classic and contemporary elegance. The black barrel is carefully polished to produce the attention-catching gloss finish that nicely complements the gleaming rhodium-plated metal fittings. The elegant engraved Guilloche pattern thus acquires an unmistakable flair, continually taking on a new character depen-ding on the incidence of light.

The coloured Guilloche writing in struments made of precious resin are distinguished by a special process. Each one is engraved individually using a method otherwise reserved for jewellery or silver accessories. The barrel is then handlacquered and repeat-edly polished. The result is a unique and most interesting surface texture. No two writing implements are identical: each is an individual example of the craftsman’s art.

t is particularly satisfying to be able to feel the quality of an object. The pure black colour, polished to a high

gloss, conveys a deep intensity. The finely fluted bar-rel is made of a single piece of material so that no screw joint interrupts the elegant and pure shape. Intuition “Ivory” offers a coloured alternative to the pure black. The combination of the ivory-coloured barrel with a black, precious resin cap polished to a gleaming finish elegantly rounds off the series. The words “hand made in Germany” are engraved in the platinum-plated ring that decorates the open end of the cap. The style is unmistakable: the trumpet shape, the fine fluting and the springloaded clip are familiar features to all who appreciate the fine art of writing by Graf von Faber-Castell.

The Intuition Platino series brings a more powerful accent into play. Elegant as ever, but with a somewhat thicker barrel, the Intuition Platino makes its mark. The gloss finish of the black barrel again contrasts effectively with the platinum-plated metal cap. That is graced by a black inlay bearing the family coat of arms. The gently curved depression of the finger grip is a promise of the comfortable way in which each pen or pencil sits in the hand. No threaded joint interrupts the pure form, guaranteeing maximum functionality.

he style of the Intuition Platino Wood collection com-bines the natural and warm charisma of wood with the

cool elegance of platinum-plated surfaces in a unique way. The certified precious woods – the dark brown grenadilla and the matt black ebony wood – grow very slowly, which makes them particularly hard and durable, and correspondingly difficult to work.

All the more remarkably is thus the finely fluted barrel as it is elegantly shaped from a single piece. Thanks to the gently concave grip it sits comfortably between the fingers. he Graf von Faber-Castell Collection is celebrating the 250th anniversary of Faber-Castell with a very special limited edition with a barrel made of cross-grained

olive wood, constructed with an innovative technique that enables the grain of the wood to be displayed in a way previously un-known. Like a masterpiece of marquetry, the cross-grained olive wood is fitted into the barrel in six individual elements, which are varnished and handpolished several times.

Only in this way does the wood reveal its flamboyant and in-teresting structure and its quite extraordinary colouring of reddish brown through to honey gold or even salmon pink. The wood can also be found in the end cap of each Elemento writing implement. The fountain pen is fitted with a cartridge/converter system and a hand-made bicoloured 18-carat gold nib in magnum size avai-lable in seven nib widths, which crowns this very special edition.

The Elemento writing instruments are individually numbered. On the fountain pen the numbering is on the decorative ring, while on the roller-ball pen, propelling pencil and ball-pen it is found on the thread section.

Faber-Castell leather-bound notepad is ideal for recor-ding one’s spontaneous ideas while travelling.

In spite of its compact size, the landscape format means that the pad has a handy width for writing and is perfectly matched to the pocket pen. Both the propelling pencil and the ball pen are completely platinum-plated and have a removable cap with spring-loaded clip. The Slim writing implements make ideal travelling companions, being easy to get on with daily. For extra comfort and convenience there are some well thought-out details such as the smooth-running precision point of the roller-ball pen, the cushioned point of the fineliner or the replaceable fine white eraser under the cap of the propelling pencil.

ith such a sophisticated writing implement as a fountain pen, the

question of quality has as much to do with engineering as design. That applies in par-ticular to the nib: the quality of this key component decides to a large extent the pleasure that the pen will give in use. The combination of 18-carat gold and rhodium, with an iridium tip, ensure a success-ful harmony of durability and soft touch, rigidity and elasticity, which in the final analysis are what make a good pen such a joy to write with. Manufac-turing such a nib is an elaborate process involving over a hundred steps, most of them carried out by hand. Each nib is then ‘run in’ by hand.
