We are incredibly pleased that you are able to join us on this special occasion. As soon-to-be graduates or proud parents, grandparents, supporters, friends, family – you are all welcome. I

sincerely hope you enjoy your time at Aberystwyth, celebrating the success of all our hard working students.

There are a number of occasions during the academic calendar when I feel particularly proud of our students’ achievements. News of individual students excelling in their academic studies is always welcome. This is bolstered by their notable successes during many and varied sporting activities, debating competitions, entrepreneurial challenges and their diligence, hard work and compassion through numerous hours of community volunteering – all demonstrating how special Aber students are. Graduation sees the culmination of all our students’ successes, and as an occasion, is unbeatable!

Whilst reminiscing on our students’ successes is important, we also look forward to what we hope will be a fruitful and fulfilling future for each and every one. In waving farewell to our graduands, we also welcome our graduates to our alumni community.

Our community of alumni stretches to the four corners of the globe. Wherever you may choose to venture next, we want to keep in touch with you to learn what you are doing. In return, we would like to provide you with continuing support and advice, and the opportunity to invite you to Aberystwyth University events which are held in a variety of locations across the world. Please remember that there will always be a warm welcome for all Aber students at Aberystwyth. Whether you’re simply passing through the town or are planning to return to study here in the future, you can be sure that I, and my colleagues, will be pleased to see you.

We would also like to keep in touch with you to keep you abreast of developments at Aberystwyth. One of the exciting projects on the horizon includes the redevelopment of our beautiful Old College, one of the most iconic buildings on the Welsh coastline. With a focus on creating a multipurpose graduate centre, the Old College and its environs will aim to establish a cultural quarter for the town. I do hope that you will return to Aber in the not too distant future to learn of how we are ensuring a sustainable future for a historically important building.

Thank you for being with us today. On behalf of all my colleagues here at Aberystwyth, I wish you a wonderful graduation day and every success in the future.

Your guide to

Graduation During the four days of Graduation, the University welcomes over 10,000 students and supporters to Aberystwyth. It’s a fantastic time for all involved, but it’s important that you know what’s available to you and when. Here is your quick guide to Graduation, including details of where you can take five minutes out and rest with a cup of tea and slice of cake!

What to expect? On arrival, students should make their way to the

Round Theatre on the first floor of the Arts Centre to register. During registration, students will be handed their card with details of their seat number, together with any guest tickets requested.

After registering, please make your way to the Parry Williams building to collect your robe. Depending on the time, you may like to take your graduation photos before the ceremony. Tempest Photography, the University’s official Graduation Photographers will be available from 8am to 6pm (7pm on Tuesday). If you would like to take your photographs in the Old College, please ask the Tempest details of how to arrange your photographs on location in the town.

A rehearsal is held before each ceremony (9.30am for morning, 1.30pm for afternoon ceremonies and 5.30pm for Tuesday evening’s ceremony). During the rehearsal, parents and supporters are welcome to relax in one of the Arts Centre’s cafes, take a wander around one of the galleries, or pop to the Students’ Union for a coffee.

All students should be in their seats at least 15 minutes before the ceremony, guests are welcome to make their way to the seats in the gallery of the Great Hall from 10.30am, 2.30pm or 6.30pm depending on the time of your ceremony.

A full programme of the ceremony, including the names of today’s graduates, details of the procession and musical interlude, can be found in the centre pages of this booklet.

Following the ceremony, graduates are asked to make their way to the La Scala steps to have their group photograph before heading to the marquee behind the Arts Centre for a celebratory glass of wine or juice.

Please ensure that you return your gown to the Parry Williams building, by your agreed time.

Enjoy!

A veritable rainbow of gowns can be seen adorning our students and staff at Graduation. Each University has its own style and the cap, gown and hood have a particular meaning which signifies the level of the qualification obtained.

The members of staff on stage usually wear the gown which demonstrates the highest qualification they hold. As the University attracts staff from all over the world, there’s a vast range of gowns on show!

Aberystwyth University’s own gowns are based on a colour palette of green and red, with the undergraduate and postgraduate gowns being black with varying hoods and the PhD being red with green adornments. A small number of students began their studies when Aberystwyth was part of the University of Wales and therefore wear the gowns from this period.

We challenge you to count the different gowns you come across during a ceremony!

Tony OrmeEnterprise Manager

“Congratulations on your Graduation! Your next step might be employment; maybe further study or even taking a well-earned break.

For some graduates, self-employment is an interesting career option, either setting up and running a new enterprise now or in the future (once they have experienced working for more established organisations, first). Some graduates set up new businesses as their full-time occupation, others run their enterprises alongside employment or further study.

If you are interested either now or in the future in the feasibility of turning a good business idea you might have into a successful new enterprise, then Aberystwyth University would be keen to support you, particularly if your proposed new enterprise is being set up in the Aberystwyth area.

The sort of help and support you might need in the start-up phase, could well include one-to-one business mentoring, business start-up skills training, information on start-up funding or networking opportunities. The University, in conjunction with local enterprise partners, offers a range of business start-up opportunities. The support includes our popular “Enterprise Wednesdays” – a regular series of workshops and presentations to support those setting up new businesses; Business Start-up Week – a boot-camp style week of events to help anyone with an idea to develop a business plan; and the Crisalis Enterprise Network – keeping those with new graduate businesses in touch with one another

All of these services are FREE and available to Aberystwyth Graduates, as well as to students and staff members. Please do keep in touch and let me know if there’s any further support you need to make your business a success.

Vice-Chancellor’s Charity of the Year

Now in its second year, the Vice-Chancellor’s Charity of the Year appeal seeks to raise as much funding as possible for a worthy cause.

As a number of occasions arise during the year, where fundraising for a local charity is possible, the Vice-Chancellor’s Charity of the Year provides a focus for community fundraising and charitable

donations. This year, nominations for the Vice-Chancellor’s Charity were sought

from University students and staff. The list of 77 nominations – all worthy in themselves - was whittled down to a shortlist of five charities by the sabbatical team of the Students’ Union and the University Executive. Following a month of voting and over 1300 votes cast, the Wales Air Ambulance was chosen as the charity for 2013/14.

Wales Air Ambulance is an all-Wales charity which provides vital emergency air cover for those who face life-threatening illness or injuries. The charity aims to reach, treat and transport patients with the greatest speed as possible to the most appropriate hospital for their needs. Since its launch on St David’s Day 2001, Wales Air Ambulance has carried out over 17,000 missions.

We look forward to working with the Wales Air Ambulance team during the forthcoming year and invite you to learn more about their work by chatting to the charity’s representatives at the stall in the foyer of the Great Hall or visiting www.walesairambulance.com.

Page 14: Graduation - Aberystwyth University · PDF fileaddress on ... Welcome to Graduation! ... minutes before the ceremony, guests are welcome to

We asked our Marketing Manager (and father to two daughters) to share some of his experiences as an Aber Graduation veteran...

How to survive today: a note to parents

Dr Russell Davies with daughter Ffion and family at her graduation in 2009.

Congratulations and celebrations. You are now the proud parent of a graduate of Aberystwyth University. All your years of hard work, all the moral, spiritual and financial support you have invested, have been repaid. Well done. Enjoy the day.

As ever in life, the best advice arrives too late. Most of these ‘survival tips’ would have been more useful to you before you read them in this

programme. Turn up early. Get a ‘tidy’ parking spot. Dress for the weather – good luck with that one, but be optimistic, as Baz Luhrmann advised – ‘wear sunscreen’. Bring plenty of hair clips. Ensure your son or daughter registers on time, attends the practice and goes promptly for any ‘official’ photographs. These actions should avoid queues and stress. It is a long way across the stage, especially balancing that hat. ‘Sensible’ heels might have been a wise choice. Relax. Hopefully he or she will get over there safely. Listen. Time passes. This ceremony will finish – eventually – and when you look back in years to come you will think how swiftly it all went. So enjoy it now. Take advantage of the hospitality provided by the University. It is only a small gesture of appreciation by us to you for your support. Book somewhere for a celebratory meal. Praise your children for their success.

(Advice to fathers: Tread softly. As usual, there are nerves behind the insouciance. Resist the temptation to offer opinions or advice on sartorial matters. Our views on such matters do not count (apart from the heels). Don’t even begin to try to work out an academic gown, sash and hat. Enjoy. Smile.)

Thank you for supporting your son or daughter during their period studying at Aberystwyth. Hopefully they will go on to achieve success in their chosen career. However, if there are no clear plans in place yet, then remember that the University provides an extensive portfolio of postgraduate courses which will further enhance employability. Similarly, if you have another child who would benefit from studying at Aberystwyth, then we would be delighted if they too were to join us. We can then welcome you back again to another graduation ceremony. Perhaps, on that occasion, some of this advice will be more useful.

Today is a day for you to celebrate.

Dr Russell Davies, Marketing Manager (survivor of 4 graduation ceremonies with daughters)

Ar ôl i bob grŵp fynd yn ôl i’w seddau, bydd yr Is-Ganghellor yn cyfeirio’r fformiwla priodol at y grŵp cyfan, ac fe gânt hefyd eu cyfarch gan y Llywydd neu’r Is-Lywydd.

Bydd cyfarchiad y Cyflwynydd fel a ganlyn:

Anrhydeddus Is-Ganghellor, cyflwynaf i ti fyfyrwyr o’n Prifysgol ni a ennillodd radd…..

Cyfarchiad yr Is-Ganghellor –

Trwy awdurdod y Brifysgol a ymddiriedwyd i mi, derbyniaf chwi i radd….. ac i holl freiniau’r radd hon.

Bydd y Llywydd neu’r Is-Lywydd yn cyfarch y graddedigion â’r geiriau -

Boed eich gofal yn wastad dros lwydd ac anrhydedd ein

Prifysgol a’n Gwlad.

Yn achos y graddau uwch, fe geir cyfarchiad gwahanol, yn mynegi llawenydd y Brifysgol o dderbyn y graddedig yn Athro neu’n Ddoethur. Bydd grwpiau bychain o ddarpar raddedigion am raddau uwch yn cael eu cyfarch gan yr Is-Ganghellor a’r Llywydd neu’r Is-Lywydd ar y llwyfan, ac yna byddant yn troi i wynebu’r gynnulleidfa i’w cydnabod.

Ceremony 7The Great Hall

Friday 12 July 2013 11am

Procedures of the CongregationThe ceremony begins with the reading of the Proclamation by one of the graduating students. It recognises the achievements and success of the graduating students, and expresses the hope that they will contribute to knowledge and wellbeing for future generations, and confront the challenges that face our world.

In each ceremony there will be candidates for initial (undergraduate) and higher (postgraduate) degrees. Candidates will be presented individually to the Vice-Chancellor. For each degree the presenter will normally be the Head of the appropriate Department. Candidates will be conducted to the stage by Marshals where they will be presented to the Vice-Chancellor and their names will be read out. After each group have returned to their seats, the Vice-Chancellor will address the appropriate formula to the whole group, and they will also receive a greeting from the President or Vice-President.

The formulae used during the ceremony may be translated as follows:

The Presenter’s formula –

Anrhydeddus Is-Ganghellor, cyflwynaf i ti fyfyrwyr o’n Prifysgol ni a ennillodd radd…..

Honorable Vice-Chancellor, I present to you students of our University who have gained the degree of ……

The Vice-Chancellor’s formula –

Trwy awdurdod y Brifysgol a ymddiriedwyd i mi, derbyniaf chwi i radd….. ac i holl freiniau’r radd hon.

By the authority of the University, entrusted to me, I admit you to the degree of ….. and to all the privileges of this degree.

The President or Vice-President greets the graduates with the words –

Boed eich gofal yn wastad dros lwydd ac anrhydedd ein Prifysgol a’n Gwlad.

May your care ever be for the success and good name of our University and Country.

In the case of higher degrees there is a different form of greeting, stating that the University is pleased to admit the graduate as a Master or Doctor. Smaller groups of graduands for higher degrees may be addressed by the Vice-Chancellor and the President or Vice-President on the stage, and will then turn to the audience for acknowledgement.
