H
eard you have turned
into a real Tees
Maar Khan these
days flicking a lot ofthings from your co-artistes and
directors?
(Smiles) Well, I do play a con man
who wants to rob a train of artifacts
but that doesnt mean I t go about
robbing trains or people in life. Its
just that I have learnt the art bec ause
of my background in martial arts.
Those trained in martial arts are
generally conversant with the art of
identifying particular nerves that
benumb the area. I have mastered
this and a few other techniques.
How was it working with
Farah Khan? Is she a betterchoreographer or a director?
I have worked with women directors
before. I did work with Tanuja
Chandra. But Farah is a hardcore
commercial director. My look in the
film has been designed by Farah and
designer Akki Narula. Just as her
brother Sajid is. They are fun to work
with and have given hits. They come
from the same school of filmmaking.Men used to be scared of her on the
sets. It used to be funny to watch her
scream at everybody. I have known
her for such a long time so have
always been comfortable with her.
I love her as a director. I think she
should make many more films.
Tell us more about Tees Maar
Khan and you character in the
film.Tees Maar Khan is a fun film and
my role in it is an out and out fun
role totally different from any of the
roles that I have attempted so far.
My character in the movie can be
half compared to Robinhood. By half
I mean that he has all the qualities
of Robinhood apart from the fact
that he does not help the poor. Hes
jovial, fun-loving and can be even
compared to someone like Charles
Sobhraj. In the film, my character
wants to make it big by conning
people but he is not negative, nor
does he believe in hurting others. He
is simply intelligent and uses every
trick in the trade to fool people. He
is arrested in Paris but he manages to
escape leaving the others wondering
how he managed to. Shirish Kunder
has written the script and has not left
an iota for the audience to imagine.
Wouldnt you like to deviate
from such films and attempt
some serious roles?
I would love to experiment with
different kinds of films. I did try it
earlier with films like Sangharsh and
Tasveer 8x10, but they didnt work
for me. I put in a lot of hard work
hoping that I could give something
different to the audiences. I ameager to do some serious films but
I guess there are few audiences for
such films. I can work in such films
to derive creative satisfaction as an
actor but my job is to entertain the
audiences. I should first succeed on
that front.
Are you disappointed that
your last two releases, Action
Replayy and Khatta Meetha,
met with a disastrous response at
the box-office, though they were
both meant to be entertaining
films?
I am unable to figure out what went wrong with these two films. I do
feel sad when my films dont work,
especially when they confirm to all
the so-called commercial norms. But it finally depends on what the
audiences like. I work on around
four films a year and I put in the same
kind of effort in all of them, hoping
that they will prove to be big hits.
Thats because I work doubly hard on
each of them. Having said this, I have
had quite a few ups and downs in
my career too but I dont allow these
phases to affect me.
Do you think comedies are not
selling anymore in the market?
I dont think so. If one were to look at
the graph of successful films in th e last
few years, most of the films that havedone worthy business are comedy
films. More recently, Dabbang also
had a good does of comedy, besides
3 Idiots. If anything, comedy should
be supported with a good storyline
and it is sure to work.
There was a time when
distributors and exhibitors had
no qualms about investing in
an overpriced Akshay Kumar
simply because it more than
assured them of due returns
on their investments. Akshay,
who also commanded a share
in the returns of his films, wasconsidered a safe bet at the
box-office with a string of hits
like Heyy Babyy, Welcome,
Namastey London, Bhool
Bhulaiyaa and Singh Is Kinng,
among others.
However, the same cannot
be said of Akshay anymore. Last
year, he gave five consecutive
flops in Chandni Chowk
To China, 8x10 Tasveer,
Kambhakt Ishq, Blue and De
Dana Dan, all of which failed to
live up to expectations. The year
2010 proved to be even more
disappointing for him with two
of his major releases, Action
Replayy and Khatta Meetha,
sinking without a trace at the
box-office. The former had the
lowest opening at the box-office
for a Diwali release. His stint on
television as a host on Master
Chef India, did not work for
him either. The only respite for
him was Housefull, which was
declared a hit at the box-office.
Keeping all these factors
in mind, trade analysts and
distributors are keeping their
fingers crossed about the fate
of Tees Maar Khan. The film
sold for a price of Rs 60 croresto UTV, is said to be crucial for
both Akshay and its director,
Farah Khan. To start with, this
is the first time Farah Khan is
working without Shah Rukh
Khan after delivering two
blockbusters with him. Also,
considering the on-going low
phase in Akshays career and
the poor response to his last few
comedies, traders are keeping a
wait and watch attitude.

Soha Ali Khan and
Kunal Khemu
are a couple and
have no qualms talking
about their relationship.
However when the two
made an appearance
at the success party of
Golmaal 3, Soha had
little time for Kunal as
she was busy bonding
with sis-in-law to beKareena Kapoor. Both
Soha and Kareena were
seen sitting in a corner
and talking animatedly
to each other, unaware
about those around
them. It may be recalled
that Soha had recently
admitted that she shared
a special bond with
both Saif and Kareena,
Kareena is lovely, warm
and caring and we get
along very well with
each other. Both Saif
and Kareena are happytogether, she had said.
As for Kunal, we are sure he bonded well with Kareena too having worked
with her on the sets of Golmaal 3. On being asked about it, Kunal was on
the defensive, Kareena is a fabulous person and actor but I didnt bond
extra with her just because I am seeing Soha. There was more male bonding
happening on the sets and she was one of us he says.
Director Madhur Bhandarkar
seems to be having a tough
time finding a suitable heroine
for his film of the same name. Last
reported, Bhandarkar had approached
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan for the role
after Kareena had refused to be a part
of the project. Kareena had apparently
asked Bhandarkar to tone down the
steamy scenes in the film. Now the news
goes that, Bhandarkar has recently
approached Priyanka Chopra for the
role and is awaiting a confirmation
from her. When contacted, Bhandarkar
denied the reports I dont know from
where the news has emanated.
I am busy working on the script of
the film. I have not approached anyone
as yet. I am tired to the speculations
doing the rounds and will make an
announcement at the right time. he
said.
Madhur Bhandarkar is stillwaiting for his Heroine
Sohashares a special bondingwith to be sister-in-law Kareena
Actress Asin finally
seems to have found
a good friend in the
industry after she found herself
to be the victim of industry
politics. Having gone through
a spate of controversies, Asin
is now taking it easy and
bonding big time with good
friend, Neil Nitin Mukesh.
Insiders say that the two have
been sharing a good comfort
level and Neil has beenrecommending her for Ravi
Chopras forthcoming venture
Pocketmaar, for which he
was recently confirmed.
Bonding with his co-stars
is not new to Neil. Earlier
he had bonded very well
with Katrina Kaif during
the making of New York,
after which he was said to be
good friends with Deepika
Padukone during the making
of Lafangey Parindey. But
the same cannot be said
about Asin, who has lately
become extremely choosyabout friends. Neil it appears
is an exception. We are
happy for Asin because the
unpretentious Neil is any day
a safe bet as a friend in the
industry.
Strange but true, Katrina Kaif
says her role in Tees Maar
Khan was inspired by a cat.
Well not literally but Katrina says her
role was inspired by the Walt Disney
Productions The Aristocats, an
animated feature of the 70s. When
quizzed about the character of Aliya
Khan in the film, Katrina replied thather character was akin to an innocent
and gullible cat. She is a wannabe
actress who wants to make it big. She
takes everything that people tell her in
the literal sense. If they tell her that
her make up is not good she will go
and reapply make up. I found many
similarities in my role to that of a cat.
Especially kittens-they are so cute and
innocent. And they have beautiful eyes
so my make-up and actions were much
similar to that of a kitten, she said.
Well Katrinas association with cats
is not new. Not long ago, the actress
had adopted an abandoned cheetah
found in the forests and it was name
Catreena.
For those who are not aware ,
The Aristocats, starring Eva Gabor
and Phil Harris revolves around a
family of aristo-cats and how an alleycat acquaintance helps them after a
butler has kidnapped them to gain his
mistress fortune which was meant to
go to them.

DECEMBER 14, 2010, AUCKLANDSTAR TALK16
Your last film failed to
arouse any excitement
at the box-office despite
all the pre-release
publicity. Are you feeling
disappointed?
Not at all. It does feel
bad when your hard work
doesnt pay off at timesbut I generally dont get
carried away by the success
or failure of my films. In
my three-year old career,
I have done seven films
of which I have given a
few hits and a few misses.
What matters is the kind of
experience I had attempting
those roles. I thoroughly
enjoyed acting in romantic
comedies like Bachna Ae
Haseeno, Chandni Chowk
To China, Love Aaj Kal,
Housefull and the recently
released Break Ke Baad.
In the case of Khelein Hum
Jee Jaan Sey, I took up the
role because I was looking
forward to working with
Ashutosh Gowariker. Also,
it was a challenge to work
in a historical film relating
to the Indian Independence
movement.
Looking back, do you
feel that your character
in Break Ke Baad had
similarities to your real
life?
Not in the least. I would say
that the character was farapart from the kind of person
that I am in real life. I did
identify with the character of
Aliya as far as her ambitions
and her ideas of wanting
to be independent. But for
me once I am committed
in a relationship I tend to
give my hundred percent to
it. Also, I can balance my
personal and professional
life fairly well, without
letting one affect the other.
Of course, my career is my
first love and my identity.
How did you deal with
the break up in your
life?
Its not easy to deal with
a break-up but one has to
find inner strength. I am
sure everyone goes through
their share of heart breaks.
All the same, you have
only yourself to depend
upon to cope up with it.
No one can come to your
rescue. Its difficult but its
not impossible. There are
different ways to come out
of it. You can either go on aholiday or immerse yourself
in work and come out as a
better person. I immersed
myself in a lot of work.
Do you think one can
be comfortable being
friends with an ex-
boyfriend?
I guess it can be awkward,
that is if you allow it. If you
really value your relationship
and keep it positive, you
can still become friends. It
may take six months or afew years down the line, but
one can still manage to do
it. I think it is important to
move on in life and not get
stuck up.
Are you open to the idea
of working with Ranbir
in the future?
We will be more than happy
to work with each other.
Bachna Aye Haseeno was a
big film but there were two
other girls in the movie. We
have been getting a lot of
offers but we have not found
the right script yet.
These days the rumour
mills are buzzing about
your relationship
with Siddharth Mallya
and your increasing
proximity to him. The
two of you were also
spotted at Leelavati
hospital.
I dont know why such a hue
and cry is being made over
my personal life. I have
said earlier too that I will
not talk about Siddharth
Mallya. When I was in arelationship earlier much
was written and said about
my personal life but I was
firm that I would not speak
about it. I would rather
allow people to speculate as
much as they want, since it
makes no difference to me.
As for being seen in the
hospital, it was I who had
an eye problem. Siddharth
merely accompanied me.
How do your parents
react to such news now?
They know their daughterwell enough and hence they
have stopped worrying. They
have also realized that a lot
of the news being circulated
is mere speculation. They
trust me and dont get
carried away by it anymore.
Your catty remarks on
Ranbir and Katrina
on Koffee with Karan
stirred up a controversy
of sorts. Dont you think
they were not in very
good taste?
I had no intention oftargeting anyone by making
those remarks. They were
meant in good humour.
Besides, I have known Karan
for a long time so there was
a comfort level. It was a
rapid fire round.
Werent you worried
about your industry
friends being offended?
I am sure many who have
gone on the show have said
a lot of things about me. I
dont think I will ever feeloffended when I learnt about
it. At the end of the day its
about being humorous and
not being serious. Let me
tell you something special.
We both received the hamper
at the end of the show.
You and Sonam seemed
to get along quite well
on the show, though
there were reports that
the two of you could not
see eye to eye earlier.
Sonam and I have never
had any problems with each
other. Its just that we dont
get time to meet each other.
She is busy, so am I. Its
difficult to keep in touch.
That is one of the reasons we
had a blast on the sets when
we met this time. If one were
to talk about friends, I have
had very few friends in the
industry but I do interact
with my co-stars when I
meet them socially. We are
all very mature and theres
no need to be negative.
Have you made new
friends in the industry?I have made a lot of friends
in the industry now. Theres
Neil, Shahana Goswami,
Imran, Akshay, Shah Rukh
Khan and Farah Khan. I
may not be working with
them always but I know that
they are more than friends
and will be there when I
need them. They have been
very protective about me.
Any wish list of actors
and directors you would
want to work with?
Theres a long list. Amongthe actors, I would love to
work with Salman, Aamir,
and Hrithik and of course
Ranbir. As for the directors,
I am hoping to work some
day with Yash Chopra, Ayan
Mukherjee, Mani Ratnam
and Imtiaz Ali once again.
I admire Madhuri, Hema
Malini, Sridevi and Rekha
too.
Have u ever idolised
anyone?
I have never idolized anyone
because I have a mind of myown. I would prefer to have
my own individuality and
own career graph.
