Maintaining Good Academic Standing
GPA stands for Grade Point Average
Remember that number that kept showing up on your report card in high school? That was your GPA!
All of your grades are averaged together on a 4-point scale.
Your cumulative (total) GPA is calculated after taking into consideration all of your grades each semester
To remain in good academic standing with the University, you must maintain a certain GPA
The university catalog outlines the required GPA based on hours earned to be in good standingSome degree programs require a minimum GPA to be considered for admission:
The College of Education requires a minimumcumulative GPA of 2.75For the Occupational Therapy & Nursing programs, a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 is requiredThe School of Social Work requires a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
Remember that GPA is only one factor for admission to a program. Beyond the minimum makes you a competitive candidate for admission.
When you graduate, you will list your GPA on your resume and potential employers won’t want to hire someone with a low GPA (If you didn’t try in college, why would they think you would try in your job?)
If you want to attend Graduate School someday, your GPA will definitely play a factor
Any Athletes? You must maintain a certain GPA in order to be eligible to play sports
Your Financial Aid will be affected if you are not making academic progress and completing classes toward a degree
• To graduate, you must not only earn the number of credit hours required, but you must also earn at least a 2.00 Spalding GPA.
• A student with a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher is designated as being in "Good Academic Standing” with the University.
• Remember that 2.0 is a “C” average and is not acceptable for several degree programs at Spalding.
Any student whose cumulative Spalding GPA falls below the minimum requirement, as shown on the scale below, is subject to automatic academic dismissal.
after 21 attempted credit hours, if the cumulative Spalding GPA is below 1.25 after 32 attempted credit hours, if the cumulative Spalding GPA is below 1.50 after 48 attempted credit hours, if the cumulative Spalding GPA is below 1.65 after 64 attempted credit hours, if the cumulative Spalding GPA is below 1.75 after 80 attempted credit hours, if the cumulative Spalding GPA is below 1.90 after 96 attempted credit hours, if the cumulative Spalding GPA is below 2.00
In order to calculate your GPA divide the total amount of grade points earned (grade x credit hours) by the amount of credit hours attempted.
For example an A is worth 4 points, a B is worth 3 points, a C is worth 2 points, a D is worth 1 point, and an F is worth 0 points.
The points are then multiplied by the credit hours for the course. In most cases the credit hours would be 3. This amount is then divided by the credit hours attempted in a session or term.
