GOVERNOR’S THOUGHTS

Club visits are continuing. By the time you read this Sandy and I will have visited 24
Clubs. Each Club has amazing stories of how they help their community and how
they have fun. All of the Clubs do both.
September is Basic Education and Literacy Month. Basic education and literacy are
essential for reducing poverty, improving health, and encouraging community and
economic development. I reviewed a number of projects within our District on Ro-
tary Showcase. The scope and breadth of these projects is truly amazing.
In looking at the issues of Basic Education and Literacy it is important to look be-
yond just the ABC’s to other aspects. These include:
Classroom facilities and equipment including technology
Educational materials
Scope of education
ABC’s
Financial Literacy
Life Skills
Educational options beyond high school
Mentoring
Improving school dropout rates
Adult literacy
Find out now what the educational needs are in your community and what your Club can and is willing to address.

AMAZON SMILE
I wanted to share with everyone something I did not know. A percentage of all your Am-
azon purchases can be credited to the Rotary Foundation.
You can choose to have the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International benefit from your
purchases by selecting them under your account profile with Amazon - it is under the
Smiles program.
There are several Rotary Groups listed and I selected the Rotary Foundation in Illinois -
It is 0.5 % of your purchase - that can be a great deal considering how many orders we
place through Amazon!
If you have not selected a non-profit to benefit from this offer please consider Rotary.

Be among the first to know!
We go along attending meetings each week,
many of us not realizing that Rotary is undergoing
some exciting times. Were you aware that we are no
longer committed to holding meetings once a week?
Clubs can now change their bylaws to determine
how often to meet, as long as they meet at least
twice each month. Also new are kinds of member-
ship, qualification for membership, and that the
treasurer is now considered an officer and board
member of a Rotary club. Other changes include
dues, club board meeting minutes, admission fees,
and more.
You can learn all this and more in ten easy
lessons. The District 5190 Rotary Academy has been
revised and updated to incorporate the changes
made during the 2016 Council on Legislation meet-
ing. Not only that, there will be even more changes
when the 2016 Manual of Procedures is published, ex-
pected in October.
The Rotary Academy is a ten easy, self-paced
course, free to all Rotarians. It is not a pass/fail test but an
opportunity to learn the unique and fascinating process
that has brought the organization to where it is today. The
course provides an outstanding opportunity to understand
all the components of Rotary, making the participants in-
formed and knowledgeable about everything Rotary.
To take advantage of this learning experience, ac-
cess the District 5190 website, click on the training bar,
then Rotary Academy, and follow the steps listed. Com-
plete the registration form and forward it as stated. The
Academy Chair will welcome you, explain a few details and
lead you to your first lesson. You will be glad you made
the decision to expand your Rotary knowledge.
For more information, contact Academy Chair
Carol Sharp at [email protected] or 530-233-4355;

ROTARY INBOUND OREINTATION
The first RYE inbound orientation was hosted by Minden Rotary on August 12 - 14. We have 19 inbound students this year. Unfortunately 4 of them arrived after the inbound orientation. Below is a list of the clubs that are hosting an inbound student, and the country that their student is from.
QUIET ROTARIAN AWARD
District Governor John pre-senting a Quiet Rotarian Award to Cathy Wilcox-Barnes of the Rotary Club of Nevada City. Cathy is the Club Treasurer and as such is involved in all of the Club's fundraisers and most service projects. She has done this even though she suffered a broken leg and is navigating with it in a cast.
