BIBLE STUDY

Dear brothers & sisters in Christ, Happy Thanksgiving Weekend Everyone! As I often share, this is the one holiday when all Americans live in a “catholic” manner; that is to say, they offer “thanksgiving”; the heart of Eucharist. Many homes mirrored the gatherings in Catholic Parishes every Sunday. They gathered with family, friends and maybe even strangers. They had to move beyond past slights, wounds, ill-chosen words and forgive. They told the stories of our journeys and those who’ve gone before us. They sat and shared a meal together in joy and in hope. They gave thanks to God. How wise our God is in calling out this way to every human heart! I hope your Thanksgiving was a blessing. Today we begin the celebration of Advent. It is a slower time of year, a reflective time of year. It is the beginning of our Church year. Make a conscience effort to ‘slow down’ in what the world would want to be a time of frenzy! It’s not easy, but it would be a blessing to you and those around you. Remember your hope, remember Christ. There are many opportunities for the Sacrament of Penance to be celebrated in this Advent season. Look over the list in the bulletin and put one on your calendar that works for you. Also, begin planning what Christmas Mass you can invite family and friends to attend! You might be the only invitation they receive to make Christmas about Christ! (Schedule is on the website) This week you will find a yellow card in the pew pockets of the Church. You are asked to take one home and prepare to make your commitment to financially support the good works of our parish. Next Sunday, the Second Sunday of Advent, we will hear the cry of John the Baptist to “ready the way of the Lord” & “the Kingdom of God is at hand”. They are a great reminder of why we give, what we give! And the work of our Parish Council, in giving us the Parish Plan, clearly delin-eates how your financial offerings are to be used. We strive to be “faithful stewards” of the gifts entrusted to the Parish and I think we do well! As always, I wish you peace. - Fr. Ed

UPDATE: CHRISTMAS DECORATING OPPORTUNITY TO WELCOME JESUS

INTO OUR HEARTS AND OUR CHURCHES

Last week we piqued your interest with our request for volunteers to help decorate our Churches (HR/SJ). This week we want to give some details on what we hope to accomplish at both churches: removing Advent wreath at SJ and rehanging the Cross behind the altar; hanging garland and attaching bows (inside/outside); fluffing and hanging wreaths (inside/outside); putting up and decorating a number of trees (2 of the trees are large and will require some strength in assembling - they also need to be fluffed!); stringing lights (inside/outside); placing poinsettias and other flowers in the churches. If you are handy with tools and don't mind climbing a ladder your help is greatly needed. We will have experts leading and directing you on what to do. Also looking for "fluffers" of trees/bows to make them look alive again! Please save these dates: SJ on 12/18the (Sun) after 11:30am Mass and SJ on 12/20th (Tues) after 8:00am Mass HR on 12/19th (Mon) after 8:00am Mass and HR on 12/21st (Wed) after 8:00am Mass Bring your family and friends for a day of fun. Has expressed an interest in becoming Catholic? Was baptized Catholic as a child, but has not celebrated the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist? We offer an opportunity to come together in a small group to learn more about our faith. Sessions focus on the teachings and experi-ence of Church and prepare individuals to celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist during the Easter season. You are welcome to participate in the process with your questions, your insights and your faith story in a warm accepting setting. Sessions meet weekly in the Pope John XXIII Room in the Ministry Center at Holy Redeemer. For information please contact Trish Swords at [email protected] or call the parish office.

EVANGELIZATION

Make sure holiday shopping is done safely No matter how you handle Christmas gifts, you’re likely to have to go to the mall with your kids during the holiday season. In the midst of the crowds, children can easily become separated from their parents. Be alert in crowds and maintain awareness of what others around you are doing. Institute the buddy system – have your kids hold your hand or one another’s. Talk with your children about what to do, and who to go to for help, should you become separated. Also, it is important to give your child your cell phone number so mall security can contact you quickly if needed. For more information, please visit http://safety.more4kids.info/186/shopping-with-kids/.
