The President said, "nobody inAmerica should be fired because they'regay, despite doing a great job andmeeting their responsibilities. It's not fair,it's not right. We're going to put a stop toit. And it's for this reason if any of mynominees are attacked not for what theybelieve but for who they are, I will notwaver in my support because I will notwaver in my commitment to endingdiscrimination in all its forms.

"Do not doubt [thats] the direction weare headed and the destination we willreach," President Obama said. "We havemade progress, and we will make more."

President Obama tells gays..“I’m Here with You...”

"I'm here with a simple message: I'm here with you in thatfight," President Obama told roughly 3,000 attendees of a gay-rights $250-a-seat black-tie fundraising dinner this pastSaturday at the Washington Convention Center. "For even as weface extraordinary challenges as a nation, we cannot and we willnot put aside issues of basic equality."

Although the comments were positiveand favorable, many in the crowdcriticized the President saying that theydhoped that he would follow through on hispromise to end the ban on gays andlesbians serving openly in the military.

Some admitted that they werefrustrated that Obama hadn't done morefor them already, especially on the "don'task, don't tell" ban. Ending the ban wasone of his campaign promises last year.

"I have hopes Obama will do it, for thepeople who want to serve," said NellBarnes, one of hundreds of same-sexmarriage advocates who marched acrossthe Golden Gate Bridge Sunday morning.Like others, she showed some impatiencethat Obama hadn't acted already.

"It's interesting to me that a man whocomes from an oppressed race doesn'tjust do it, with a swipe of a pen," saidBarnes, 43, of Fresno.
