Gospel of John:Its Author
• John was one of Zebedee’s sons, the brother of James. (Sons of Thunder)
• James and John were both fishermen.• As he mended his nets, Jesus called him to
be His disciple.• He was a disciple of John the Baptist. • His home was in Jerusalem.
Its Author
• Included in the inner circle (with Peter and James)
• Was present at the raising of Jarius’ daughter . (ruler of local community)
• One of the witnesses of Jesus’ Transfiguration
• “Disciple whom Jesus loved” • Closely associated with Peter and his work
Gospel of John:Its Author
• Also the author of 1,2 and 3 John, as well as Revelation.
• Spent the later part of his life in Asia Minor, probably in Ephesus.
• Banished to Isle of Patmos during reign of Domitian.• Only disciple who did not die as a martyr.• Lived to an advanced age; was probably the last
apostle to die.
Gospel of John:When Written
• The majority of scholars believe John wrote the Gospel of John at Ephesus after he returned from the Isle of Patmos.
• Ephesus was an ancient Greek City on western coast (present day Turkey)
• Isle of Patmos –small Greek Island where John was believed to be exiled to!
• Written between 95 and 98 A.D.• Written for use among the Gentiles and second
generation Christians. He did explain a great number of Jewish traditions.
Gospel of John:Audience
• Internal evidence indicates John’s gospel was not written for the benefit of the Jews.
• The Jews would not need the explanations of their customs.
• The Gospel’s simplicity gives it a universal appeal—the universal gospel!
• Written for those second generation Christians who did not witness Jesus in person! We are second generation Christians

• Signs– Manifestation of His power
• Belief– The desired effect of the signs
• Life– Eternal life--the spiritual benefit
• Meaning and purpose of the miracles• To show the Divinity of Christ or Christ as
God!

• John 1: 1-18
• The Prologue to the Gospel of St. John is a mystical reflection on the Divinity and Incarnation of Jesus Christ
• The Incarnation, the Word made Flesh, was the major theme.
• An outstand piece of Literature written by Christ’s Closets Follower!
The Messages of the Prologue
• In the beginning there was the Word, and the Word was God, and Word became flesh!– Incarnation– Son of God made Man– Son of Man– The Messiah– Emmanuel– Our “Christ”– John’s use of the Greek term “Logos” (The Word)

• The True Light!– The Way the Truth and the Light– The Light of the World– The Light that filled the Darkness– Christ our Light– “Guide me Lord”– “Show me the way Lord”
