The Meaning of the Word Liturgy

• Your text book defines liturgy as coming from the Greek ergos (work) and leiton (“of the people), meaning public work or any work done for the common good.

• Since the days of the early Church, liturgy has become to mean public and official worship of God.

• Including the Mass and all her official rites and ceremonies-the liturgy is the worship of God by the People of God, His Church.

The Purpose of the Liturgy

• The purpose of the liturgy is diverse.– It gives glory and honor to God,– Builds up the faith of the people and– Instructs the faithful in the Faith.

The Christian liturgy is the response of faith and love to the “spiritual blessings” with which the Father constantly enriches us.

Page 5: The Liturgy of the Catholic Church – The Way We Worship Chapter 6-Part 3 and 4 Theology II Mr. Christopher B. Perrotti.

The Purpose of the Liturgy

• At the same time, the Church gives back by unceasingly offering God its own gifts of praise and glory to God.

• The liturgy is an exercise of the priestly office of Jesus Christ, continued through Apostolic Succession through the Holy Spirit.

• As we know, the first form of the Mass was celebrated at the Last Supper.

A Reenactment of the Paschal Mystery

• By its nature, the Mass, which is the most sacred form of liturgy in our Church is a constant reenactment of the Paschal Mystery.

• It is a celebration of the Life, Death and Resurrection of Christ through His Word, The Eucharist and Psalm (song).

• When Christ said to the Apostles “Do this in memory of Me” He was giving the an important gift to keep Him a live body and soul in the Church and the people of God.

The Stations of the Cross

• The Stations of the Cross is a popular devotion used by individuals or groups who wish through prayer and reflection to follow Jesus Christ on his way to Calvary.

• Many Christian Churches practice the devotion, but the Stations holds a special significance among Roman Catholics.

• It is one of the most important devotions honoring the passion of Jesus during the Lenten Season.

Page 19: The Liturgy of the Catholic Church – The Way We Worship Chapter 6-Part 3 and 4 Theology II Mr. Christopher B. Perrotti.

The Stations of the Cross –”Via Crutis”

• The most important reason for making the Stations of the Cross is that it is a powerful way to contemplate, and enter into, the mystery of Jesus' gift of himself to us.

• In the 1500's, villages all over Europe started creating "replicas" of the way of the cross, with small shrines commemorating the places along the route in Jerusalem.

• Eventually, these shrines became the set of 14 stations we now know and were placed in almost every Catholic Church in the world.

Novena

• A novena is a series of prayers that are said for nine straight days, usually as a prayer of petition but sometimes as a prayer of thanksgiving.

• The nine days recall the nine days that the Apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary spent in prayer between Ascension Thursday and Pentecost Sunday

Page 23: The Liturgy of the Catholic Church – The Way We Worship Chapter 6-Part 3 and 4 Theology II Mr. Christopher B. Perrotti.

First Fridays

• First Friday devotions among Catholics are related to devotion to the Sacred Heart of Christ.

• First Friday practices date to the last decades of the 17th century, when Jesus appeared to St. Margaret Mary and spoke to her of His Sacred Heart.

Page 24: The Liturgy of the Catholic Church – The Way We Worship Chapter 6-Part 3 and 4 Theology II Mr. Christopher B. Perrotti.

Promise to St. Margaret Mary

• In the excess of the mercy of my Heart, I promise you that my all powerful love will grant to all those who will receive Communion on the First Fridays, for nine consecutive months, the grace of final repentance: they will not die in my displeasure, nor without receiving the sacraments; and my Heart will be their secure refuge in that last hour.

First Friday Mass

• Holy Mass on Friday is devoted to the Sacred Heart and to the Precious Blood of Jesus. Due in part to the promise revealed by Christ to St. Margaret Mary, attending Mass on the First nine Fridays of the month is a popular novena among many Catholics.

• There are many Novenas dedicated to almost every cause. In this powerful devotion, Christ reveals the great power of the Eucharist and prayer in our lives.

The Celebration of The Mass

• The Mass is the Central Act and most important form of Worship in the Catholic Church.

• As far back as the Acts of the Apostles and Saint Paul's epistles, we find descriptions of the Christian community gathering to celebrate the Lord's Supper, The Holy Eucharist.

Page 28: The Liturgy of the Catholic Church – The Way We Worship Chapter 6-Part 3 and 4 Theology II Mr. Christopher B. Perrotti.

The Celebration of The Mass

• The Third Commandment tells us to keep holy the Sabbath Day.

• For Catholics, that day of worship is Sunday by participating in the Mass.

• As we have studied the Paschal Mystery, through the Celebration of the Mass, we have an opportunity to share in the glory of Christ’s death and resurrection and receive Him in body and soul through the Eucharist.

Page 29: The Liturgy of the Catholic Church – The Way We Worship Chapter 6-Part 3 and 4 Theology II Mr. Christopher B. Perrotti.

“Do this in Memory of Me”

• At the Last Supper, Jesus gave us the greatest gift, His Body and Blood in the form of the Eucharist.

• No other grace from God exceeds the power of the Eucharist, the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ.

• He kept his promise when he said…”I will always be with you” by allowing us to share in the Eucharist at the Mass, a celebration of the Paschal Mystery.

Page 30: The Liturgy of the Catholic Church – The Way We Worship Chapter 6-Part 3 and 4 Theology II Mr. Christopher B. Perrotti.

The Power of Prayer

• “When two or three are gathered in my name, I am there” – Jesus’ great promise to all of us!

• Prayer can be formal as discussed earlier in the presentation or it can be personal.

• We have been talking all week about how Jesus is calling us all to have a personal relationship with Him.

• Prayer is the conduit which makes this happen!

Page 31: The Liturgy of the Catholic Church – The Way We Worship Chapter 6-Part 3 and 4 Theology II Mr. Christopher B. Perrotti.

Jesus taught us to Pray

• He gave us the “Our Father” a prayer we all share with Him.

• He also speaks to us through the Mass, Sacraments, our friends, parents and neighbors.

• God calls us to Himself in many ways, service to others and acts of kindness.

• Live as Christ lived, be Christ like, let Christ into our lives.

Page 32: The Liturgy of the Catholic Church – The Way We Worship Chapter 6-Part 3 and 4 Theology II Mr. Christopher B. Perrotti.

God Calls us to Worship

• As we worship God, we share in His graces.• That gift of grace is the food for our soul that

allows us to share in His Kingdom.• That is what He pines for all of us, come follow

Me, let Me comfort you, rejoice in My love.• That is the Kingdom of God, His home in which

He wants to share with all who want it.• Through Worship, we say yes Lord, Amen!!!!

Page 33: The Liturgy of the Catholic Church – The Way We Worship Chapter 6-Part 3 and 4 Theology II Mr. Christopher B. Perrotti.

Final Mediation

• Saint Paul tells is in a number of his epistles that we are earthen vessels, a dwelling place for the Holy Spirit. Through worship, we validate God in our lives and the communion of the Church.

• Ask the Lord today to open up your hearts to be that dwelling place for Him to thrive.
