On Wednesday Gordon West K‐6 students received their first report for the year. The report describes student achievement in each of the subjects taught in all NSW schools. To prepare the reports, teachers used a five point scale to describe the achievement of each student in each subject area over the past two terms. All students in NSW are taught the same BOSTES syllabuses. Their achievement is reported consistently on a five point scale. Our school is using five word descripƟons, outstanding, high, sound, basic and limited, to summarise the five point scale of achievement. The grades tell you how your child is achieving in each subject to indicate the quality of the work produced. They are not a pass/fail scale and do not rank your child in their class. There is no predetermined number of students who will achieve any of the achievement levels. Understanding an “Outstanding” Achievement In pracƟce an “Outstanding” achievement would be awarded if your child is performing extremely well and is readily able to apply their skills, extensive knowledge and deep understanding to new situaƟons.

Dates to Remember

Last Sunday a ernoon members of the the Gordon West school community a ended the very entertaining movie Toy Story 4 at the Macquarie Centre cinema. For many years the Gordon West School FRASC has organised a

movie a ernoon and this movie lived up to expecta ons with everyone having a great a ernoon. Although specifically aimed at children, movies such as these have something for everyone adults and children alike. Julia and I look forward to these movie events where we have the opportunity to see great movies that we would not normally a end. A big thank you to Mrs Andrea Chen for organising such a fun event.

Congratula ons to our school Dance Team on their excellent performances at the North Sydney Dance Fes val held at the Glen Street Theatre. Mrs Har gan and Miss Wolujewicz did a marvellous job preparing our children for these special performances. This pres gious fes val is very professionally organised providing our children with the

wonderful experience of performing on three occasions over the course of the fes val. The dancers will now audi on for the Ryde Spectacular to be held at the Opera House later in the year. The Gordon West school community will have to opportunity of seeing these wonderful dancers at our school Showcase Performance to be held on 12 September.

Our school is using five word descrip ons, outstanding, high, sound, basic and limited, to summarise the five point scale of achievement. The grades tell you how your child is achieving in each subject to indicate the quality of the work produced. They are not a pass/fail scale and do not rank your child in their class. There is no predetermined number of students who will achieve any of the achievement levels.

Understanding an “Outstanding” Achievement In prac ce an “Outstanding” achievement would be awarded if your child is performing extremely well and is readily able to apply their skills, extensive knowledge and deep understanding to new situa ons.

Page 2: GORDON WEST BULLETIN€¦ · GORDON WEST BULLETIN VOLUME 10 2019 JULY 4 2019 Principal’s Report Ryde Road Pymble 2073 Telephone: 9498 4644 Fax: 9498 4436 Email: gordonwest-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au

Understanding a “High” achievement In prac ce, a “High” achievement would be awarded if your child is performing well and has consistently met the outcomes at a high level for the repor ng period. These students will also demonstrate the knowledge, skills and understanding that enables them to apply their learning to most situa ons.

Understanding a “Sound” achievement A “Sound” achievement means that your child is learning what he or she is expected to learn. A “Sound” is a good result. These students are where they “are supposed to be” in terms of achieving the expected curriculum standard at this stage of their learning.

Understanding a “Basic” achievement A “Basic” achievement is telling you that your child has achieved some of what he or she was expected to achieve, however there are some gaps in their knowledge, skills and understanding. These students are not quite where they “are supposed to be” at this point in me.

Understanding a “Limited” achievement A “Limited” achievement tells you that your child has demonstrated only an elementary amount of what is expected for students at this point in me. There are

very significant gaps in their knowledge, skills and understanding. This indicates that students achieving this grade are quite a way from being where they “are supposed to be” at this point in me. It flags the need for addi onal support and interven on. It is also very important to remember that these grades are only part of the picture of what your child can do. Your child’s report also includes informa on about your child’s effort level, individual learning goals in English and maths and the teacher’s comment about your child’s progress. Once again thank you for your support over the past term. Gordon West con nues to be a dynamic centre of learning where our wonderful teachers work together to provide excellent opportuni es for our children, totally supported by a very ac ve parent body in a happy, friendly environment. School resumes for students on Tuesday 23 July 2019. Teachers resume on Monday 22 July 2019.

NSW POLICE BAND WOW GORDON WEST STUDENTS

Students from Years 2 to 6 were treated to a concert by the NSW Police Band. The audience was singing and dancing to a combina on of top 40 hits, Disney classics and tradi onal concert band repertoire. CB1 par cipated in a workshop beforehand and then performed alongside the NSW Police Band at the concert. The purpose of the concert was to expose all students to the various instruments that comprise a concert band and to ignite a passion for music. This is par cularly important for our Year 2 students who will soon have the opportunity to sign up for the 2020 GWPS Training Band. Any students in Years 3‐6 are always welcome to sign up to the GWPS band program.
