It is hard to find a better golf

holiday destination. Named for two

consecutive years [2014 and 2015] as

the World’s Best Golf Destination at

the World Golf Awards, Portugal has

an enormous diversity of excellent

golf courses, set in the most beautiful

landscapes and with a mild climate

all year round. Anyone playing golf

in Portugal, whatever their level of

expertise or available budget will

have an experience imprinted on

their memory.

There are 65 courses of 18 and

27 holes, throughout the continent

and islands, with stunning views of

the Atlantic Ocean, flanked by cliffs

and white sand dunes, and others

framed by peaceful lakes, mountains

and green groves, in harmony with

nature. Designed by famous names

from the world of golf such as Robert

Trent Jones Jr., Jack Nicklaus,

Arthur Hills, Nick Faldo or Severiano

Ballesteros, many of these golf

courses have been internationally

awarded for their quality, such as,

the Oceânico Victoria, designed by

Arnold Palmer, one of the ex-libris of

golf in Portugal, which has hosted

the Portugal Masters since its very

first edition in 2007.

Lisbon and the Algarve are the

most sought after regions thanks

to the mild climate all year round,

the iconic courses and their diverse

layouts, many on the sea front, the

beautiful beaches, a cuisine of

excellence and the lively cultural life.

But also, the north of the country,

where one can find the second oldest

golf course in Europe, the Oporto

Golf Club, in Espinho; Madeira, with

its mountain courses; and the Azores

with its countryside golf, unique

in the world, all offer the players,

whether amateurs or professionals,

unforgettable experiences.

"If you have never been to the north of Portugal before, you really should. Combine fantastic golf with culture, wonderful food and wine, beautiful scenery, and lots of dreamy little towns and villages that you can explore and enjoy, and you have an idea of what Porto and the north of Portugal is all about."

/PORTO AND THE NORTH

Close to the sea and the mountains, this

region is known for its green landscapes and

exceptional wines, among which the world

famous Port Wine. Here you can play golf in a

wide variety of courses, surrounded by inspiring

landscapes.

In greater Porto there are various

reference courses, and of course, there is the

advantage of being able to visit one of the most

beautiful and dynamic cities of the Old Continent,

which has been considered, several times, as the

best European city break. Exploring the historic

city centre is a must – classified as Word Heritage

by UNESCO -, the traditional Bolhão Market, the

beautiful Lello Bookshop and the centenary Café

Majestic, a gem of the Art Nouveau, nominated

one of the most beautiful cafes in the world

several times. In the evening, the restaurants,

bars, galleries and clubs on the streets of Cândido

dos Reis and of Galeria de Paris, all fill up.

Further north, in Minho or in Trás-os-

Montes, it is irresistible to associate golf with

the excellent regional cuisine and the original

green wines.ÁXIS GOLFE PONTE DE LIMASilva Brothers - Par 71

Between Lagos, Sagres and the Serra

de Monchique there are courses with varying

degrees of difficulty, where the greens and

fairways are framed by beautiful natural

scenery. It is in this area, near Portimão, that

one can find the oldest course in the Algarve,

Sir Henry Cotton Penina Championship

Course. The most central area, between

Vilamoura, Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo

is one of the most luxurious in the Algarve,

with courses that combine links and fairways

with cliffs, lakes and bunkers, providing a high

standard of holes. Take, for example, hole 16

at the Royal Golf Course in Vale do Lobo, the

most photographed in Europe. It is also in this

area, at the Oceânico Victoria, in Vilamoura,

that the Portugal Masters is held since 2007.

To the east, between Tavira, Castro Marim

and Vila Real de Santo António, the courses

are more level, but their imaginative designs

peppered with the indigenous species of the

region, such as fig, olive, carob and oak trees,

are equally challenging.

"Until recently, even seasoned travellers would have been hard pushed to pinpoint the Azores on a map. But finally the world is waking up to the allure of these nine volcanic islands, scattered like stepping stones in the mid-Atlantic. Whether you're watching the sunrise creep up Pico's perfect cone, tearing around a crater lake on a mountain bike or holding your breath as a whale surfaces from the deep blue, the Azores, with their rumbling mass of beauty, are surely one of Europe's last great island adventures."

Looking around and not seeing any

type of construction on the horizon… only

the luxurious nature, lilies and hydrangeas,

cryptomeria and cedar woods and the

peacefulness of the island, always with

a glimpse of the Atlantic Ocean. The

morphology of the greens invites one to go

for a walk. The mild climate allows one to

play during any season of the year, at any

of the three archipelago’s courses: Batalha

and Furnas, on the São Miguel Island, and

Terceira Island Golf Course, the latter offering

adequate circuits for both beginners and

professionals. For those who seek a more

relaxed modality, purely for fun, it is possible

to practise a freer golf version in the Azores,

with similar rules, among grasslands and

farmlands, away from the official greens.

It is an expanding sport on these beautiful

islands, where one can enjoy the silence and

the rare tranquillity, but at the same time not

miss out on programs to make the most of

before and after a game of golf, to try the

local cuisine and admire the nature in its

wilderness.

Madeira is a golf destination par

excellence all year round. Like an eternal

spring, a rich cuisine based on local produce,

the two dif ferent islands boast three

magnificent golf courses and accommodation,

leisure and well-being offerings which

delight any golfer. The tradition of golf on

the Island of Madeira dates back to 1937,

when the Englishmen Miles, Leacock and

Blandy built the first 9-hole course. Today,

here, there are two courses that stand out

for their notable beauty and backdrops: the

Palheiro Golf and the Clube de Golfe of Santo

da Serra. One can’t fail, to appreciate the

green nature of the island, a walk through

the famous “levadas”: artificial irrigation

channels created to carry rain water to the

farmlands of the whole island. Porto Santo

Golf, located on the Island of the same name,

famous for its golden sand beach, 40 km from

Madeira, was designed by the legendary

Severiano Ballesteros and it distinguishes

itself by being carefully integrated into the
