OLEAN -- Frank Higgins admits, with a laugh, “They just keep elect-ing me,” jestfully inferring nobody else wants the job.

But it’s not a joke to the Bartlett Country Club membership which has voted him to a fourth straight one-year term as president.

And the likely reason is that Higgins has gotten things done ... big time.

When he first took the job in 2012, Bartlett was battling both member-ship and financial issues.

However, in the past three years, the former has stabilized and the latter has been countered by over $700,000 in capital improvements.

“The membership really stepped up,” Higgins emphasized. “They donated the money for the things we’ve done.”

IT STARTED with a new fleet of carts.

“An anonymous donor said he would match the donations other members made over an 8-day span,” Higgins said. “We ended up raising $152,000 in that time and with the matching donation it gave us over $300,000 .”

Next came a new roof, boiler sys-tem and kitchen for the clubhouse.

“Again,” Higgins pointed out, “it all came from member donations.”

The final major addition from the capital improvement fund was last summer’s replacement of the swim-ming pool.

“For that, 108 members donated $336,000,” Higgins allowed with a sense of pride. “It’s a state-of-the-art pool and we needed it. The old one was 60 years old.

“How do I know? An 88-year-old woman member told me it was the second time she had donated to the

Bartlett pool. She said she had donat-ed when the original pool was built 60 years ago.”

BUT THE new swimming facil-ity didn’t dampen the contributing mood of Bartlett’s members.

“A woman member offered to match up to $15,000 for upgrades inside the clubhouse for things like the floors and rugs,” Higgins said. “I told her, ‘We just put out $336,000 for a pool, so I’m not sure how many donations are still out there.’ But we went to the members and raised $12,000 and the woman still wrote us

a check for $15,000.”

NATURALLY, though, the essence of Bartlett is still its golf course and it hasn’t been ignored.

Each year, two or three tee boxes are rebuilt, with emphasis on the senior areas.

And, currently, new pumps are replacing the 20-year-old devices in the course’s irrigation system.

“The next thing,” Higgins said, “is to replace the sand traps over the next three years.

“We want to dig them out and put in a higher grade of sand.”

BARTLETT’S membership, according to its president, is “around 240.”

“We’ve stayed pretty steady,” he said. “That translates to about 170 golf memberships and 70 social members.

“We gained about 10 this winter, but lost about the same number with people relocating. Hopefully, though, we’ll add some this year with the new pool and some of the upgrades we’ve made in the clubhouse and on the course.”

Members contribute to Bartlett upgrades

Bartlett Country Club members have been enjoying a brand new pool since last July.

ELLICOTTVILLE -- Since its opening in 1957, the Holiday Valley Ski Resort has been moving toward being a year-round destination.

Already one of Western New York’s premier ski areas with its 56 slopes and 13 lifts, in 2011 it added an Adventure Park with its network of rope courses, zip lines and a mountain coaster to serve as spring,

summer and fall entertainment. But long before they became part

of the Holiday Valley experience, its main non-winter pursuit came in the form of the 18-hole Double Black Diamond golf course.

Oh, it started as a 9-hole layout in 1962 and the back nine wasn’t added until 25 years later.

And that addition created an interesting confluence of cross pur-poses.

You see, some of the year’s best

skiing is enjoyed in the spring, hence Holiday Valley wants the season to last as long as possible.

Of course, spring is also the time that golfers are itching to get back on the course.

Well, at HV’s Double Black Diamond layout, that timing conflict-ing with skiing is “half” problematic.

THE COURSE’S front nine opened a week ago Saturday, the day before Holiday Valley’s skiing ended for the season.

Double Black Diamond’s back nine?

“It’s under snow cover,” said Kyle Benish, an assistant pro at the course for 12 years. “We understand we’re going to be a month later than every-body else (as an 18-hole course).”

But while the perception was that this past winter was particularly cold with an excessive amount of snow, that wasn’t the effect on HV’s golf course.

“We got a lot of natural snow,”

Benish conceded, “but it was so cold that there was a lot less need for man-made snow.

“So, from the golf standpoint, we’ve had worse winters.” And that’s good news for the Double Black Diamond course’s greens-keep-ing crew as some of the back nine holes intersect with ski slopes. Still, Benish pointed out, “There’s usually very little damage (caused

by skiing) ... just a little wear and tear.”

Thus, the course’s full 18 holes should be operational by mid-May.

No matter, the closing date for the resort course with 150 members is already locked in.

“We close on Halloween whether its 80 degrees or a snowstorm,” Benish said of the Oct. 31 conclusion to the season. “We’ve got to rope off the greens (as protection from snowmobiles and skiers) and get the course buttoned up for the winter.”

And Holiday Valley’s “other” season.

At Holiday Valley, you can choose: ski or golf

BRADFORD -- Last May 24, Terry Reiley, the former Bradford High golf coach and one of the area’s top senior players, died while playing at the Pennhills Club.

His older brother Dan won the 1995 Southwestern New York-Northwestern Pennsylvania Men’s Amateur and four years after Terry lost in the finals. The younger Reiley also made that tourney’s consolation flight finals three times.

And to honor Terry’s memory and benefit the golf programs at both Pitt-Bradford and St. Bonaventure, to which he sent scholastic golfers, the inaugural tournament named in his honor is set for May 16 at Pennhills.

The Terry Reiley Memorial will have individual gross and net cham-pions.

Tee and green sponsorships are available for $100 with patron contri-butions of $250 which can be desig-nated to either college. The tourney entry fee is $75 and includes cart,

range balls, lunch and prizes.Contributions can be made care

of the Terry Reiley Memorial Golf Tournament at Northwest Savings Bank, 33 Main St., Bradford, Pa. 16701.

JCC event set for May 20OLEAN -- Entries and sponsor-

ships are being accepted for the 23rd Annual Jamestown Community College (JCC) Scholarship Classic Golf Tournament at Bartlett Country Club set for May 20.

Registration begins at noon, with a 1 p.m. shotgun start.

The tournament is sponsored by the JCC Foundation and JCC Cattaraugus County Campus athletic department.

Proceeds benefit Cattaraugus County Campus athletic programs.

For more information, contact Angela Pucciarelli, assistant director of athletics, at 485-8430 or [email protected].

for a math competition in the area. All this hard work has helped Christopher earn High Honor Roll recognition for his entire high school career.

Indicative of his honesty and trustworthiness, he has been the treasurer of his high school class, Student Council, Varsity Club, and Peer Helpers. Other organizations to which he belongs include the follow-ing: Spanish Club, National Honor Society, and Mock Trial.

In the sports arena Christopher has played four years each of foot-ball, basketball, and baseball, having been selected captain in each sport his senior year. In football he was selected twice to the AML North All-Star Team, and he has also been selected to play in the prestigious Don Raabe Big 30 All-Star Game. Last season in baseball he was chosen for the Northern Allegany League All-Stars.

Of Christopher’s accomplish-ments, Marc Budd, Port Allegany High School principal, says, “Christopher has been a key member of every sports team he has par-ticipated on. While his individual accomplishments are too lengthy to list, his efforts have helped every team he participates on. His work ethic and dedication inspire younger athletes to raise their expectations, work harder, and be ambassadors of the sport.”

The son of Joseph and Mary Lashway, Christopher will attend either Clarkson University or Penn State Behrend where he will major in Engineering and Management.

Monroe MorrisCuba-Rushford CentralA “student-athlete” in the tru-

est sense, Cuba-Rushford’s Monroe Morris has led the way for the Rebels over the course of his high school career. He is an active athlete, a fine student, and an acclaimed citizen in his community. He lends a help-ing hand throughout the area by his involvement in the Lions Club Walk for Sight, United Way campaign, Garlic Festival, Operation Christmas Child, and a DEC camp in the sum-mer.

Even though he is extremely busy outside of school, Monroe still finds time in school to be a top-tier student. He is a member of the National Honor Society, and he has been a class officer and an officer of the Student Council. He participates in band and in both the Science and Language Clubs. Some of his other interests can be found in the Fisheries and Wildlife program, Scholastic Challenge, and Youth Court.

On the athletic fields, Monroe has participated in four years of both cross country and swimming. He was selected as team MVP for three years in cross country as well

as swimming. He has also run track and field and played tennis. Some of his part-time jobs have included working as a lifeguard at local pools.

Monroe’s abilities are best described by the Cuba-Rushford Central School superintendent, Carlos Gildemeister: “Monroe is a true role model for our student body in every facet of his personal attri-butes, from academics to extracur-ricular activities. His outstanding class rank and GPA is a testament to his exceptional work ethic, but that alone only makes up a small portion of what this student-athlete means to our school.”

Monroe will travel off to the University of Alaska at Fairbanks to enter a newly-developed major called Fisheries and Engineering. He is the son of Jay and Karen Morris.

Scott MilesWellsville HighScott Miles is both a gifted student

and fine athlete for the Wellsville Lions. Ranked first out of a class of 95, Scott has been an outstand-ing student in the classroom. He has consistently challenged himself by taking the highest quality and most rigorous courses that Wellsville has to offer. In June he is expected to graduate with an Advanced Regents Diploma with Honors including endorsements for Mastery in both Mathematics and Science.

Due to his tremendous academic successes, he was elected to the school’s National Honor Society. He has been a member of a number of school organizations including the Student Council, Science Club, Language Club, Leos Club, and Ushers Club. Outside of school he has been heavily involved in com-

munity service. He has served at the Elk’s

Scholarship Breakfast, worked for the Ushers Club, Salvation Army Christmas Drive, the Leos Club fruit sale, and the Lutheran Church.

In addition, Scott has received numerous awards and accolades as he has played three years of varsity soccer and tennis. He was the ten-nis team’s MVP in both his junior and senior seasons, and he won the Soccer Coach’s Award his senior year.

Jeffrey White, the Wellsville High School principal, describes the versa-tile Scott by saying, “Scott is an hon-est and dependable young man. He has always represented our school and community with the utmost pride and dignity. He respects and acknowledges his actions, behavior, and decisions. They reveal who he is and are a reflection of his family and community.

He is an excellent role model for younger students and his high school peers.” Scott, the son of Cheryl Miles and Dennis Miles, will attend Daemen College and major in pre-med.

THE 11TH ANNUAL Big 30 Scholarship Scramble will be held on Monday, July 13, at Bartlett Country Club. The four-person scramble features at 1 p.m. shotgun start. The cost of $85 per player includes greens fee, cart and steak dinner.

If you are interested in playing or sponsoring a hole ($100), please con-tact Jim Melaro. He can be reached at (716) 307-3445 of [email protected].

Entries (with check and foursome information: names and handicaps) can be mailed to: Jim Melaro, 3627 Route 16, Hinsdale, NY 14743.
