GOLEEN & DISTRICT COMMUNITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER SERVING THE MIZEN PENINSULA VOL: 8 WEEK 36 SEP 03 2015 Published every Thursday. Mass Times: Monday & Friday: Schull 9am. Tuesday & Thursday: Goleen 10am. Wednesday: Ballydehob 10am. Saturday: Lowertown 8pm. Sunday: Ballydehob 9.30am, Schull 10.30am, Goleen 12 noon. Church of Ireland Services: Sunday: Schull 10am, Toormore 11.30am, Ballydehob:11.30am. Recent Deaths - Harriett Bell, Ardmanagh, Schull. Sadly missed by her son Stephen, daughter-in-law Karen, grandchildren Ella and Samuel, relatives, neighbours and friends. Terence Collins, Scotland and late of Ballycumisk, Schull. Fondly remembered by his family, relatives and friends, both here and in Scotland Eileen O'Sullivan (nee Kissane), Shountellig, Dunbeacon and 'Ár Neamh', Church Cross. Deeply regretted by her husband John, children John, Margaret & Connie, son and daughters-in-law, grandchildren, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends. Our sincere sympathies to all. May they rest in peace. Wedding Congratulations to Caroline O’Connell, Ballydevlin and Andrew D’Alton, Ardee, who were married recently at St. Finbarr’s Oratory, Gouganne Barra. Also to Martina Hellen, Dunmanus East and Shane Crowley, Castletownsend, who exchanged their marriage vows in the Church of the Seven Sacraments, Lowertown. We wish both couples a long and happy life together. Congratulations to Sarah (Whooley, Schull) and Robert O’Donovan, Ballincollig, on the birth of their daughter, Sophie Ann. NO NEW CLIENTS That’s the chilling message that came from Tuesday night’s meeting of Home Helps, in the West Lodge Hotel, Bantry, where a fifty strong group of Home Help women attended. These ladies deliver the best possible service to the public in West Cork, saving the State tens of thousands of euro yearly, but to hear that NO NEW CLIENTS are been taken on, except in extreme cases, is simply astounding, and tells you of an uncaring Government, who play Scrooge with our elderly people’s lives. How can anyone tell someone you can’t have a Home Help service as we have no money, when we all see huge amounts of waste at the top each and every year? If any Minister stands over this, it truly asks questions of his suitability to hold office, when the most vulnerable in our society that need his help are been treated like second class citizens. This, coupled with an allocation of half hour home help stays, in houses with people who need far longer to get themselves feeling like they can be strong enough for the day ahead, says it all and it is the same story right across the country, as in North Kerry last week where a similar meeting took place re Home Help crisis down there. I could fill five newsletters with what was heard on Tuesday, and would leave you, the public, gob smacked: serious issues like banked hours not being dealt with when people near are begging for extra hours, allocation of work hours to some and not to more, only 15 minutes allocated to some in the country, five to six hundred hours wiped out, with elderly gone in to long term care or passing away, and these not been fed back in to the system and steering the Home Help service down the private road, when two previous Ministers, Harney and O’Reilly, promised to have it properly regulated and have not up to now. This is just a small synopsis of what was discussed on the night by a passionate Home Help service, who has worked for the public and not always for themselves; a lesson the Minister and his party colleagues, should look at more closely going forward. SIM REPLACEMENT Many O2 customers have had nightmare problems with their phones since the amalgamation with Three mobile, but a simple change could help you, and this is a decision you are advised but not forced to take. If you go to the local Three mobile shop, in Skibbereen, Bandon or wherever, and simply ask for a SIM replacement, which your entitled to free of charge, it will, in 90% of the Mizen Peninsula, give you a much improved service, not perfect by any means but much improved. The move comes with a caution: you will not be able to put back your old SIM if the new one does not increase your service, but you are almost guaranteed to get a huge boost in your service, which in turn will put a smile on your face. Thanks to James and Denis for this advice, as it has worked for me and also for others, who have been tearing the hair out of their heads for the last few months. NATIONAL SCHOOL BUILDING FUND COLLECTION On Saturday night and Sunday morning next, there will be a Church Gate Collection, for Schull National School Building Fund, in Lowertown and Schull Churches. The extension, which took place a few years back, left a fabulous, state of the art building for decades to come and got rid of the old

portacabins. We need not explain the relief for all to see them go, but the extension, part funded by the Department at the time, left a heavy financial burden, for the school and the people from Schull and its surrounds, to cover. A committee was set up, early this year, to tackle this and have done so brilliantly. We continue our goal in this school year, and urge each and every person who is able to contribute generously. Please support this collection, as it will help one of your own; your relation, your neighbour or friend, to educate their children in a safe and comfortable environment. MC GDCC

Mizen AFC started off their new season with a difficult Parkway Cup draw, involving Togher, Skibb and Clon, but started impressively. A 4-2 win away to Togher on Friday 21st August, with goals from Liam O’Connell, Darren O’Donovan, Scott O’Reilly and Gerald O’Callaghan, was followed, on Wednesday 26th, with a 3-1 win in Goleen against Skibb, with more goals

from Darren O’Donovan (2) and Scott O’Reilly. Big thanks go out to Pat Moynihan, David Coughlan, Sheila Lucey, Rob Greenway and Brian Clarke for behind the scenes work keeping the club going! Also wishing Brendan Goggin a speedy recovery, following a nasty head injury during the Togher game. Next up for Mizen are two away fixtures, both vs Clon AFC, in the Parkway cup on Wednesday 2nd at 7pm and first league match on Sunday 6th at 2pm. Daniel O’Callaghan

Table Tennis News - A Qualified Success at First Attempt

Mair and James Kelly travelled to Dublin to play in the Irish Senior Table Tennis Classification over the weekend of the 29th/30th August. This is the first official event on the national calendar and known as the toughest. The

event is played over two days, with the first day a qualifier for the second. The top 10 seniors from last year automatically qualify for the Sunday, with the rest trying to gain one of the other 6 places available. Without any expectation, Mair and James entered the Senior Ranking event for the first time. Played over 4 rounds, 2 group and 2 knockout, James made his way through the event and he recorded a number of excellent wins including those against two of the top juniors of last year and the Irish No.16 Senior. Winning two knockout matches again against top 20 Irish Seniors, he found himself quite unexpectedly finishing in 5th position and securing one of those much coveted qualifying places. Mair faced a very strong first round group with two of the top contenders in her group. She played extremely well and topped her second round group of 5. With fewer women qualifying for the second day, she missed out but still managed to finish equal 15th overall. James had the Irish No.2 and No.7 in his group on the Sunday and, even though he was a bit nervous, put in a good overall performance and even took two sets of the Irish No.10 in the second round. He eventually finished 14th out of the top 16 which in the context of a 15 year old is a brilliant achievement and a great start to a new season. Well done to both players for flying the Goleen flag so proudly. Owen Kelly

Goleen GAA - Our Junior footballers lost out to Kilmeen in the semi-final of the West Cork Championship, bringing our involvement in

competitions to a close for the season. On what was a disappointing evening for us; players, mentors and supporters alike, I don't think anyone would argue that the best team won. I would like to thank everyone involved over the year; the selectors, helpers and the committee for keeping everything running smoothly for us, and a huge thanks to Shane for the dedication, passion and knowledge he brought to the club. With these qualities taken on board we can look ahead to brighter days, which will surely follow. The cards nights are starting up again, with the first night being Friday 11th September in The Lobster Pot. Scrap-metal collecting ongoing, any donations contact Richie Barry (086-258-1296). JIM BREEN CONTINUES TO RAISE AWARNESS Jim Breen made his way to the Mizen on the Cycle for Suicide only a couple of months ago, and everywhere he went he left an everlasting presence and, guess what, we left an everlasting impression on him; he came back.

On Tuesday morning, Jim started the Mizen to Malin Run to raise Suicide Awareness. Jim is accompanied by event manager, Kevin Finn and Slava Koza, a man who has run across America, UK, France and Cuba. The American run was the equivalent to 180 marathons. Slava will make his way through Ireland in the next number of days and be part of an event, Light a Light through Ireland, at 8pm on Thursday 10th September. This will unite the people of Ireland, everywhere, at the one time, raising their awareness of suicide.

The first leg of the run took place from Mizen Head to Dunmanway and we look forward to far bigger plans being unveiled in the weeks ahead.

A big thank you from the community to Jackie Dornan, Kate Kelly and Emma Jepson, who have worked hard to keep Jim Breen and his team fully focused on West Cork, and also assisting them with the simple message that ‘it's ok not to feel ok; and absolutely ok to ask for help.’ MC GDCC
