Table Tennis - The Olympics are

without doubt the biggest sporting event in the World today and once every 4

years it becomes the focus of nearly every sports fan on the planet. Many of

the sports are rarely seen at any other

time and I love that variety and as a kid I remember well the impact the

Olympics had on my lifetime interest in sport. I am constantly surprised by the

variety of sport and activities available

within our small community of Goleen. The building of our Community Sports

Centre was a massive investment to the future of our community and I believe it continues to offer so many of our residents and visitors a focus and an opportunity

to take part in sport. The recent County Title for our senior GAA team has brought

the community both pride and a display of passion within our community. The successes of Mizen Rovers, our rugby players, sailors, cyclists, kickboxers, surfers,

golfers and many others are regular features in the newsletter. The past year of table tennis has been a truly memorable season. The three teams taking part at

the International Youth Cup in Belgium returned with two overall titles and a 3rd

place in the Cadets. Our players raised the Munster School's League Title playing for Schull CC. 8 Munster Caps were awarded to Goleen TTC players this season

along with 2 Irish Caps at the Senior International Schools events with a Gold, and 2 Silver medals returning to Goleen. 8 Munster Titles and an U21 National Ranking

Title at the Connaught Open are impressive results.

These achievements are down to the hard work and commitment of the players but none of it would be possible without the tremendous support of the

community. The Community Council has been incredibly supportive of our sport over the years and the contribution of our new sponsor Jorg Goldsmiths based in

Crookhaven has further helped. Claire Barrett organises a number of fundraising

Table Quizzes and we have benefited from having one of these over the last couple of years. Local business including the Crookhaven Inn, O'Meara's,

Barleycove Hotel, Lobster Pot, Tim McCarthy, Dermot Sheehan's, Gnosh, Loughbeg Farm and others have provided prizes for the night. This year ‘s Quiz nis

being held on the 17th August at the Crookhaven Inn at 9pm This event has

become one of the most important events on our calendar and we are hoping once again to receive the communities support. The Summer Camp finished on

Saturday with our annual Festival Tournament and this was won by Cian Ross from Ballincollig. Training nights take place on Fridays, all equipment is supplied,

so come along and have a go at one of Ireland's leading clubs. Kate Jepson

Cúl Camp: Mizen Rovers had a very successful Kellogg's Cúl Camp in the Community Sports Field, Goleen, last week from Monday July 25th to Friday July 29th. 85 boys and girls had booked in for the week, some doing the week for the first time, others renewing acquaintances from all parts of the country and further afield, made over the previous years. Coaches for the week were David O'Mahony from the St Colm’s club and also Carbery player,

Libby Coppinger from St Colm’s club, Libby also plays football for Bantry and

Cork. Stephen Cronin from Nemo Rangers, who captained the county U21 team to Munster glory this year and were agonisingly beaten by Mayo in All-Ireland final. Stephen brought the trophy on the last day, he was wished well by all as he lined out for the seniors the following day against Donegal. Our own Darren O'Donovan was fourth coach for the week the man

who was to score the all important goal later that Friday evening in the County Final. They imparted their knowledge of the skills of both codes during the week through drills and fun games. Assistance was given by lads

who themselves attended the camps over the years, James O'Driscoll, Michael O'Reilly, Matthew Sheehan, Rob Egar and Liam Walsh. Thanks to Community Council for use of facilities for the week luckily we didn't need to go indoors even though Tuesday and Thursday looked dodgy for a while. To

all who helped out on Monday morning with the smooth logistics of fitting and labelling helmets and hurleys it worked like clockwork. Thanks to parents who helped supervise at break times. To the ladies Maura, Anne and Maureen who provided teas, coffees and tasty bites, a big thank you. Thanks

to parents for booking and bringing children for the week, also those older club players who loaned hurleys and helmets for the week. Go mbeimid beo ar an am seo aris. Tadhg O Siochain.

Congratulations to Tim Murnane,

Rathooragh who completed the 620

Kilometers cycle Tour de Munster over 4

days last weekend in aid of Down

Syndrome Munster. Photo: Barry O'Donovan and Ollie Farrell both

Caheragh with Tim Murnane. Well done

lads!
