Visits from numerous people, seeing friends that have been gone for months, announcing new officers and Jenga. For those of you that were not in attendance, Dee Baird has volunteered to become the new Chapter G Director starting March 1st with Linda Johnson as her ACD. Dee served as the chapter’s first Assistant Director when Carl was Director and she and Galen have been steady participants of Chapter G when they were home in Green Valley. When Kris and I talked to Dee about becoming our new director, she said the only way she would do it is with some help. That makes sense so I mentioned to her who I had in mind and asked her if she wanted us to talk to Linda about becoming her assistant and she said yes. After explaining to Linda that Dee was to become our new director and that she would need some help, Linda responded with it sounds like fun! Linda Johnson and her husband Wally are transplants from Indiana and I first met them at our District Convention at the Hilton Hotel a couple years ago. Linda is one of the 6 women in Chapter G who have a license to ride their trike and I hear the men who are married to some of these women are missing their motorcycles a lot! I asked Dennie Long to become my District Treasurer and he had accepted. While announcing the above appointments I mentioned that Chapter G would need a treasurer also. Bill Nicholls volunteered to do that (one has to wonder if Bill volunteered so quickly since the Long’s and Nicholls live a block from each other and this will give Bill an opportunity to bug Dennie). The Nichols were the couple Kris and I shared a table with at the first official monthly gathering. One thing that has been mentioned before and deserves mentioning again is that while Dennie was the Chapter G Treasurer he took the opportunity to streamline a method of accountability that helps each treasurer who opts to use it make their jobs a lot easier. Kris and I look forward to sitting in the “audience section” at our next Chapter Gathering and watching Chapter G continue to grow. Thank you for your continued support over the last 2 plus years as the Chapter Director and we ask that you share the same with the incoming officers. Chuck

Safety Educators Corner: Carl Welch Are you a Ride Wrecker? When we go on a Chapter ride we all have choices. We can elect to ride in the GWRRA Chapter Organized group, our own group or by ourselves. The GWRRA Chapter Organized ride groups should be made up of no more than five bikes. You have a Lead bike and a tail/ trail/ tail gunner whatever you prefer to call them. The last bike! The Organizer/ Director/ etc/ generally explains the ride, identifies the Leads, sizes the groups. 5-5, 3-3, 4-3, 5-5-5, etc. Bikes without radios go in the center; trikes go in the rear or together in a group if qualified. S.O.P. The CB channel/s needs to be declared, not assumed, and a radio check made by all Leads of the group. Sounds simple, and is simple, except!!, we are dealing with people. We have people that don’t want to ride in a particular group because their friend is in another. That Lead rides too slow or too fast. The people in that group slow down and speed up all the time and don’t keep proper spacing. They don’t say the CB commands clearly or properly and then we have the irritating comedian on the CB radio that can make it dangerous and just won’t leave it alone. Push, push, push all the time. By the time we get to our destination after being on and off the throttle and listening to the babbling radio traffic, we are so frazzled and rattled we can’t eat or think straight but we are polite and having FUN? “Courtesy” plain old common “Courtesy” sometimes isn’t so common. Sometimes someone has to step up and be the Adult in the group. Not always the most popular person but a necessary evil. If CB Chatter is a problem the Lead/s should address it. Maybe you’re CB Jester or Jesters will find themselves in a group of their own. If the Groups radio conflict the Organizer should assign different channels, 5 or so apart, to the different Groups. The tail is responsible for keeping the formation tight. If there is an opening, cars will try to squeeze in making for confusion and endangering the Group as a whole. Going traffic or thru signal lights with a strung out Group become irritating and impossible. If there is a problem with a bike on the ride, only the Tail will stop with the rider to assist. The Lead/s should continue with the rest of the Group/s to a safe area down the road where all can pull off and wait safely. Once you arrive at your destination do not scatter. It is the Lead’s responsibility to find parking for their group. Stay in formation unless told to do different. The ride should be enjoyable to you. If not, make up your own group, Be Happy! Lag behind the groups or ride with a friend by yourselves. Find out what time the Official Chapter Group is going to be at the destination and meet them there. Do you ride in a Group or a Gaggle?? In what I have called the Official Chapter Group/s each member has to, participate concentrate, and stay focused, work as a team to make it a success. If one person is out of sync, it will throw the whole group off. There is nothing more beautiful to watch than a well executed Group. It is like watching a Precision Drill Team. True Poetry in Motion. All bikes in perfect harmony. Perfect Stager, Perfect moves, Move Left and it is like a solid unit as they make the move. It is really something to take pride in and be proud to be a part of. Like the Blue Angels. You do have to be attentive and stay on your marks all the time. For whatever reason as I have traveled across country, large groups of Harley Riders seems to move in sync as a unit far better, even riding side by side, than Winger. Pride?? Carl & Sherryll Welch
