If it is anything like mine it is going way too fast. It seems like it was not very long ago we were all attending the last meeting for 2014 - 2015, and now here we are talking about getting ready for our first meeting of the 2015 – 2016 calendar year. I am looking forward to a fun, educational and exciting year. We have a great staff, lots of new volunteers and committees, and a whole lot of fun and exciting things planned. We have lots of good speakers already lined up. This month we are going to hear about how the ASHRAE Design Guide can be used to improve energy efficiency in large Texas hospitals. It’s a great topic, and we have a great speaker. Be sure to mark your calendars now for our April meeting. We have the privilege of hosting the ASHRAE Society president for this year, Mr. David Underwood, and hear him speak about one of his passions – Building Energy Quotient (BeQ). I’m sure you won’t want to miss that one. Our primary goal for this year is to get more of our consulting engineers involved so that we have a much higher participation with that segment of our members. To encourage the engineering community, and engineers that work for large organizations, to get more involved we have a special program just for you. Technical Committees Submitted By Kimberly Thompson

Background on ASHRAE Advanced Energy Design Guides The Advanced Energy Design Guides (AEDG) are a series of publications designed to provide recommendations for achieving energy savings over the minimum code requirements of ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1, the first step in the process toward achieving a net zero energy building which is defined as a building that, on an annual basis, draws from outside resources equal or less energy than it provides using on-site, renewable energy sources. The Guides have been developed in collaboration with these partnering organizations: The American Institute of Architects (AIA), the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IES), the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The New Building Institute (NBI) participated in the development of the initial Guide. The original series of Guides have an energy savings target of 30% over 90.1-1999. Each 30% Guide addresses a specific building type. Categories include: Small Hospitals and Healthcare Facilities, Highway Lodging, Small Warehouses and Self-Storage Buildings, K-12 School Buildings, Small Retail Buildings, and Small Office Buildings. https://www.ashrae.org/standards-research--technology/advanced-energy-design-guides/30-percent-aedg-free-download The second series of Guides have an energy savings of 50% over 90.1-2004. Each 50% Guide addresses a specific building type. Categories include: Grocery Stores, Large Hospitals, Small to Medium Office Buildings, and K-12 School Buildings. https://www.ashrae.org/standards-research--technology/advanced-energy-design-guides/50-percent-aedg-free-download The recommendations in the Guides allow those involved in designing or constructing the various building types to easily achieve advanced levels of energy savings without having to resort to detailed calculations or analyses. The prescriptive energy-saving recommendations are contained in a single table for each of the eight U.S. climate zones. Help in implementing the recommendations of the Guides can be found in an expanded section of how-to tips in the "How to Implement Recommendations" chapter. The how-to information is cross referenced with numbered tips and color-coded climate zone maps. Examples of advanced building designs and technologies are also provided to illustrate the points made and to demonstrate the flexibility offered in achieving the advanced energy savings provided within the Guides. Additional bonus recommendations point out other opportunities to incorporate greater energy savings into the design of the building. Feedback on the use of any of the Guides is welcomed and encouraged by ASHRAE. Please let us know your thoughts on the Guide itself and/or what impact the recommendations had on your building. How important was the Guide in your energy savings efforts? What energy savings have you experienced as a result of using the AEDG? ASHRAE is always interested in results that can be used as case studies in future publications. Please contact us in Technical Activities with your feedback or technical questions.

Young Engineers in ASHRAE

The Young Engineers of ASHRAE has become a very successful group over the past few years for the Houston Chapter. The YEA group was formed to enhance member benefits for young professional ASHRAE members by giving them the opportunity to expand their knowledge about the industry, as well as socialize and network with other young professionals. Once a month, the members of YEA meet for lunch or happy hour. During these meetings members are able to talk with their fellow young professionals, meet new young professionals in the industry, as well as discuss the current happenings in the industry. These meetings are a great way for members to learn as well as teach others what they have learned about the industry. YEA also offers a few larger events each year. Lunch-and-learn events happen a few times a year in which different companies lecture and give tours of their facility and products, providing a better hands-on understanding. YEA is always welcoming new young professionals in the HVAC industry to participate. If you or anyone you know may be interested in getting involved, please contact Mitchell Campbell at 713-782-2701 or [email protected] Mitchell Campbell / Alex Roessler Young Engineers in ASHRAE Chair
