September is going to be busy month, we have some nice rides planned also Buckeye Timeout is here, there is no cost for this event, so ride over and spend some time, (Plain City is close). Join us on some rides, if you cannot make the whole ride, you can always cut out early to head home. If for some reason we do not get the newsletter out on time remember after gathering in October, we will have Fun Day at Randy Young's home.

Big Muskie McConnelsville, OH

Sunday, Aug 11, I decided to jump on my bike and go for a ride. I headed southeast and ended up turning onto State Route 78 off of US 33 and rode through Buchtel, Glouster and so on during my ride. Once outside of Glouster near Burr Oak SP I ended up behind a white Chevy being driven by an elderly couple. They were doing 25-30 mph in a 55 mph zone for miles!! Three times along the way part of the north bound side of the road had fallen away and there were one lane stop lights. I couldn’t pass them as the road was curvy and hilly. Oh, I so wanted to pass them. After about 45 minutes of following them they finally turned off of 78. My ride after that was great. Finally I crossed over the Muskingum River and turned right to continue following Rte. 78 as I finally decided to find Big Muskie outside McConnelsville. I was thirsty by this time and stopped at a gas station to grab something to drink. While I was paying I asked the cashier where I could find Big Muskie. She stated stay on 78 east out of town about 7-8 miles, go up a hill and the Miners Memorial Park (Big Muskie) would be on the left. I finally started out again and continued on my ride. It felt like I had gone too far when I finally headed UP the hill she mentioned and spotted the sign for Big Muskie. I pulled into the lot and parked by a Black 1800 from Franklin County. While I drank some more of my soda, Randy walked up to the bike and I started a conversation with him. He has had the bike for about two months; he used to ride dirt bikes and smaller bikes, but wants to ride long distance so he bought the GW. He lives in Groveport so I gave him an application and advised him to check out GWRRA and gave him the info about our next gathering. Maybe we will see him in September. After taking a couple of photos I got back on the trike and headed back towards home. It was great weather, the roads were not very crowded and the ride was fantastic. I rode 229 miles over a 6 hour period. It was great. If you have not been to see Big Muskie it is well worth the ride on nice curvy, hilly roads. Margaret Moore

Membership Enhancement & Social Coordinator

Mary Bayes

ACHEIVING THE VISION GWRRA provides a culture which fosters Members with shared values, team concepts, and camaraderie. This culture also provides its Members with opportunities for personal development and achievement. Does this particular element sound like it could be part of the foundation for GWRRA's motto "FRIENDS FOR FUN, SAFTEY, AND KNOWLEDGE"? Friendships usually form when people with shared values begin to associate with each other, resulting in a spirit of familiarity and trust, which is the definition of camaraderie. Another definition of camaraderie is the experience of good fellowship-fun. And what results in more satisfaction than a bunch of friends working together as a team to accomplish a shared goal??? The GWRRA Vision is an all-encompassing statement of how GWRRA leadership functions to grow the association. GWRRA's Divisions work harmoniously as a team to increase the Membership vase by creating an atmosphere that provides fun, promotes safety, and heightens knowledge, and by offering a full range of desirable services and benefits for its Members. Divisions, known as Programs, include Rider Education Leadership Training, Membership Enhancement, and Operations. Operations consist of the Directors and Assistant Directors who are the leaders (Cheerleaders) of the team. Rider Education and Leadership Training function to promote safety and heighten knowledge while Membership Enhancement focuses on the FUN, not to say that participation in Rider Education and Leadership Training can be FUN too!!!!!! Another part if the vision element involves the Member Benefits which are too numerous to detail here... (Check out the Benefits under Membership at www.GWRRA.org.) These programs teams all work together in an effort to make membership in GWRRA the best experience it can be-keeping current Members and attracting new ones. A vision statement is a goal for the long term. It is an idealistic planning tool describing goals which may be attained. These may have seemed like oversimplified goals in support of the mission to become the best motorcycle association of FRIENDS sharing in FUN, improving SAFETY of motorcycling and giving the Members KNOWLEDGE they can use every day. However, what may have appeared to be simple has sustained our Association for over 40+ years and will lead us into the future.....

THE MORE YOU KNOW, THE BETTER IT GETS!!!!! PLEASE KEEP THE FOLLOWING IN YOUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS....

Bill Ford: Will be having surgery on his leg when the white cell gets higher.... Sandy Durbin: Recovering from hip surgery..... Ken Daft: Is now able to ride with a helmet, great seeing him again.... George Fowler: Had had an amazing health report from his Doctor's. Should there have been someone that I have missed. Please let me know.............

Newsletter Editor’s Notes

I received many photos for use in this month’s newsletter but due to number of pages it had grown to, I only used a selection of the photos submitted. September 19th is ‘International talk like a Pirate Day’! Some here is some pirate humor.

Have you heard of the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie, it is rated Aarrrrgh! Why don’t pirates shower before walking the plank? They just wash up on shore. How much did the pirate pay for his peg and hook? It cost an arm and a leg.

Robert G & Angela Williams

Hello Fellow Riders Putting together these Newsletter Articles are sometimes work for me. I don’t always have an idea on what I want to discuss and then from somewhere a FLASH of inspiration comes with the content. This Month was one of those months and the FLASH came from Tom Eden OH-B3. He was reading the TN District Newsletter and saw an article from Gary and Patti Hamilton about the Master’s Program. The article mentioned a program that he had not heard much about, that being the Honorary Master’s Program. So, let’s discuss some options that we as Master Tour Riders can use. We have talked before about how to advance from Master Tour Rider to Senior Master through Grand Master and then on to Life Grand Master. So, what happens if for some reason we can’t meet those requirements but want to stay engaged! We have two options for those who maybe not be able to complete the level’s program requirements to stay current. The first one is the Honorary Master’s Program. I am pulling this from the Officer Handbook so you can read it as written:

Honorary Master’s Program Starting in 2015, GWRRA established a way to preserve the Master’s Program integrity and further appeal to the Member who might be unable to fully participate – yet cares deeply about supporting our great Rider Education Program. If we can keep a Member active in GWRRA longer, we assist in Membership Retention and capitalize on retaining some experienced ambassadors for Rider Education. The focus is to give those few Members that can no longer ride or perform CPR/FA, but desire to continue contributing specifically to Rider Education, some incentive to do so. Those members who wish to participate in the Honorary Master’s Program need to apply, using an N.33 Form, declaring their intention to participate. Requirements:

Continued GWRRA Membership Current in the courses and requirements you can attain. (Declaring on the N.33 which

course(s) you will stay current in) Declare on the N.33 which course(s) that are unattainable

o Declare what Rider Education Activity you would like to substitute for the course(s) that are not attainable. Examples include:

o Take the Classroom portion of a Rider Course

o Attend a co-rider seminar

o Present motorist awareness to a civic group

Page 14: Gold Wing Road Riders Association...Baymont Inn & Suites 27441 Helen Dr., Perrysburg OH 43551 Ph419-751-2173 You will want to use the Wyndham GWRRA corporate discount code 1000008705

14 | P a g e

This substitution is on a case by case basis, tailored to the individual, and approved by the District Educator.

Renew every three (3) years using an N.33 Automatically dropped from the program if the N.33 declarations are not met.

As we can read, GWRRA want to keep those who deeply care about being actively involved in the Rider Ed program. So, if you would like to discuss if this would be right for you. Call Your District Educator. The second option is to “Retire the Members Level”, and again taken directly from the Office’s Handbook:

Retiring a Level From time to time, a Member may decide that they are no longer capable of maintaining certifications required for their highest Level they have achieved due to age, illness, etc. and do not wish to participate in the “Honorary Master’s Program”. These members should complete an N.33A form and forward it to the District Educator. In the database, this should be noted in the comments to alert other users to the decision made by the Member. Once retired, the member is no longer eligible to continue progressing in the Rider Education Levels Program at any level, unless they bring themselves current. They may continue to hold a position or certification requiring the level to be current with approval of the Director of Rider Education or President. These exceptions shall always be made considering the best for the Membership.

Notice that in this path the member is not going to progress from Level III to Level IV or from Senior Master to Grand Master but remain in their current Level. The Key here is they can to hold a position or certification requiring the level to be current… So, if you would like to discuss if this would be right for you. Call Your District Educator. For more information on the Levels Program, please feel free to contact me directly. Thank you, Tom Eden, for this month’s topic. Lastly, I am still in search mode for someone that would like to take on a District Leadership Role. If you have a love for Rider Education, I want to talk to you about the opportunities the Ohio District Educator’s Role has instore for you. Robert G & Angela WILLIAMS Interim District Educators [email protected] OHIO, it’s not the destination, it's the ride.
