INTRODUCTION

Inventor of Gold Nanoshell NAOMI HALAS.

Nanoshells invented at rice university could becomealternative to chemotherapy by killing only cancerouscells after injection into patients blood stream.

Nanoshells are hollow silica spheres covered with gold.Scientists attach antibodies to their surfaces, enablingthe shells to target certain cells such as cancer cells .

WHY GOLD FOR NANOSHELL

Nano shell must have one special ability of stronglyinteracting with near infra red rays (and have photo

stability).

When the near infrared rays shine on metallic nanoparticles it can start an interaction called as

SURFACE PLASMON RESONANCE.

Nano particles converts electromagnetic waves into heatenergy tremendously, so that it can destroy cancer cell.

When intense infrared light was shone on the tumours,

the Gold nanoshells converted the light to heat

Thisheat is enough to kill the cancer cells in the tumours.

PROCEDURE

Start with silica particles (tiny glass particles too small tosee)

Add a chemical to the particles that makes them sticky.

Add another chemical that allows very small gold islands to

be attached to the surface of the glass particles (one large

glass particle with many tiny gold islands).

Add more gold to tiny gold islands so that they grow

together (Forms continuous gold shell around glass core). Byvarying the thickness of the shell, the properties of the

Cancer cells grow faster than normal cells . Nanoshells will continue binding with cancer cells until

about twenty nano shells are connected to each cancercell.

At this point nano shells are ready to start imaging andtargeting the cancer cells they are bound to.

Dr. Halas revealed the results ofexperiments in which gold nanoshellswere injected into mice with cancerous

tumors.

When intense infrared light was shone on

the tumors, the nanoshells converted thelight to heat--enough heat to kill thecancer cells in the tumors. Ten days later,the tumors were gone.

CONCLUSION

Gold nanotechnology works!! However ,the main issue of concern is

research into the use of nanotechnology in

the progression of the fight against cancerhas not elaborated as of yet to be used for

treatment in humans.

If in the future this could be overcome by

carrying out clinical trials in humans, westrongly believe nanotechnology offers a

range of alternative and more effective ways

of battling cancer.
