Steps to Better Goal Setting① Your group’s goals must align with the organization’s mission and strategy

and tie to company-wide goals

② Goal setting should be a collaborative process so the goals are accepted and recognized as important by everyone who will have to implement them

③ Review past goal achievement to see why they were successful, and keep current on the team’s progress to provide assistance and resources

④ Goals must be specific, clear and easy to understand

⑤ Progress must be measurable - set outcomes & benchmarks

⑥ Establish a time frame to maintain a sense of urgency

⑦ Make them challenging, but achievable

⑧ Goals should be supported by rewards – CELEBRATE SUCCESS

team and each of your direct reports

Make sure you have the correct

data and information sources to use for the measurement

Use a -0- Baseline approach, don’t rely on last years data

Revisit the goals on a regular basis

Stretch goals keep the team performing after the commit has been met

It gets you to look at the business differently, taking risks and trying

new things you might not normally do

Aim for at least of the 1/3 of the stretch goal to be achievable with the current resources

Goals must be framed

in time,

beginning

ending

points

You need to decide both what you are going to do and where it is going to take you. In short, you must have a strategy.

They should not be unreachable.

Their attainment should not be dependent on a host of circumstances beyond the

person’s control.
