abs]) for ideal gases

Meetprincipe : Diff. Pressure (dP)
• Video clip : Flow-dP (also on YouTube) 4:49 min
Important :
• Artificial restriction in pipe : orifice plate, venturi, nozzles, pitot tube
• Bernouilli’s Law changing velocity in restriction pressure
• 2 pressure measurement points comparison difference
• Pressure diff. directly proportional to flow velocity volume & mass-
flow
• Concerns :
• Excessive pressure drop
• Abrasion, due to solid particles
• Turbulences, disturbing a reliable measurement
• All liquids, gases and steam can be measured
• High process pressures & temperatures

Slide 19 / 64
18/09/2012
Meetprincipe : Electromagnetisch
• Video clip : Flow-Electromagnetic (also on YouTube) 4:42 min
Important :
• Faraday’s law : an electrical current can be generated by movement
through a magnetic field
• For electrically conductive fluids : + and – charged particles in fluid cause
voltage difference in opposite sensors
• Water, acids, alkalis
• Flow-volume can be calculated (with pipediameter)
• External disturbances eliminated by alternating magnetic fields

18/09/2012
Meetprincipe : Thermisch
• Video clip : Flow-Thermal (also on YouTube) 5:19 min
Important :
• Gases
• Independent of gas temperature
• Heating element cooling effect by gas flow
• Proportional to the gas mass flow in pipe
• Measurement influenced by gas density
• Measurement influenced by gas thermal properties

Slide 21 / 64
18/09/2012
Meetprincipe : Ultrasoon
• Video clip : Flow-Ultrasonic (also on YouTube) 4:31 min
Important :
• Diagonally placed piezo-electric sensors, alternating ultrasonic sound
pulses & detection of time differences
• Acceleration/deceleration of sound pulses represents flow velocity
• Calculate flow volume (with pipediameter)
• Flexible mounting, process safety and low cost
• 2nd version : “Clamp-on” : no intrusion in pipe – up to large diams

Meetprincipe : Vortex
• Video clip : Flow-Vortex (also on YouTube) 4:31 min
Important :
• Fixed obstruction disturbing flow vorteces mechanical sensor picks
up oscillating “waves” of pressure
• Uninfluenced by pipe vibration, pressure surges & temp shocks
• Frequency of vorteces represents flow velocity, hence volume-flow
• Total volume-flow is calculated by counting passing vorteces
• If low velocity, then no vorteces reduce diameter of vortex meter
• Combines with temp meter calculate mass & energy flow
• Ideal for saturated steam & gases

Slide 23 / 64
18/09/2012
Meetprincipe : Coriolis
• Video clip : Flow-Coriolis (also on YouTube) 3:55 min
Important :
• Direct mass flow measurement
• By measurement of phase-shift of excited bent tube
• Highest accuracy
• Simultaneous density measurement “Multiparameter measurement”
• By measurement of changing frequency of exited bent tube
• Viscosity, Fat content
• Often combined with temperature

Selectie & toepassingscriteria
• Flow meter selection is complicated, partly due to the number of designs
and technologies, but also to the great many factors that influences the
choice
• Basic considerations that affect the meter selection :• Fluid properties considerations
• Installation considerations
• Environmental considerations
• Economic considerations
• Performance considerations (device properties)
• Once all the influencing factors have been clarified and the application
defined in detail, it is time to consider which flow measuring principle will
be the most suitable for the application

Invloed op de verschillende meetprincipes
• Gemiddelde snelheid/massa meting of spotmeting
EMF meting weinig gevoelig voor
flowprofielen.
Thermische massaflow (spotmeting)
zeer gevoelig voor flowprofielen
Coriolis Massaflow totaal ongevoelig

Invloed laminaire flow op b.v. Vortex
meetgebied
