receive Him in Holy Communion. He says He is the vine and we are the branches. As Jesus tells us (a spiritual person would not come up with on his/her own) the way we know we are connected is through the Eucharist. If you know someone who is not coming to Mass each week, please invite them back. Let’s stay connected to the Vine. Holy Hours: Why not come and spend an hour with Jesus during a Holy Hour on Sunday evenings from 6:30 to 7:30pm or Tuesday evenings from 5:00 to 6:00pm? Give Jesus an hour, and He’ll give you a lot more. Last week at St. Max’s. Next weekend will be my last weekend at St. Max’s as your pastor. I ask for your prayers as I move to Knowlton and become the Pastor at St. Francis Xavier Parish and St. John the Baptist Parish in Peplin. I do not like good-byes, so it won’t be good-bye but rather until we see each other again. I’m only going to be about a half hour away. So, please join me after Mass for coffee and cake not to say good-bye but until we see each other again. Sincerely in Christ, —Fr. Jim Trempe

Father’s Corner Many people say they believe in God, that they are “spiritual”, but that they do not need an organized religion to help them. One problem with that is religion tells us what to believe. A person who is only spiritual tends to believe in themselves. A religious person (Christian) tends to believe what Jesus teaches. To believe in Jesus is to be in relationship with Him. Jesus says “whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life and will live with me forever in heaven” and “for those who don’t won’t” John 6. A pretty good reason for religion, through our faith we receive Jesus each week in Holy Communion. Jesus said He is the vine and we are the branches. How do you know if you are connected to the vine? -If you receive Jesus each week in Holy Communion. There’s a story of a young boy named Mike who refused to go to school. When he was six years old, his mother took him to school, but he cried and protested all the way and, immediately after she left, ran back home. She brought him back to school and this scenario played itself out for several days. He refused to stay in school. His parents tried to reason with him, arguing that he, like all children, must now go to school, to no avail. His parents then tried the age-old trick of applying an appropriate combination of bribes and threats. This too had no effect. Finally, in desperation, they went to the Sister and explained the situation to her. For his part, the good sister simply said, “If the boy won’t listen to words, bring him to me.” They brought him into the convent. The Sister said not a word. She simply picked up the boy and held him to her heart for a long time. Then, still without a word, she set him down. What words couldn’t accomplish, a silent embrace did. Mike not only began willingly to go to school, he loved it. What that parable wonderfully expresses is how the Eucharist works. In it God physically embraces us. Indeed that is what all sacraments are, God’s physical embrace. Words, as we know, have a relative power. In critical situations they often fail us. When this happens, we have still another language, the language of ritual. The most ancient and primal ritual of all is the ritual of physical embrace. It can say and do what words cannot. Jesus acted on this. For most of His ministry, He used words. Through words, He tried to bring us God’s consolation, challenge, and strength. His words, like all words, had a certain power. Indeed, His words stirred hearts, healed people, and affected conversions. However, there was a time, powerful though they were, they too became inadequate. Something more was needed. so on the night before His death, having exhausted what He could do with words, Jesus went beyond them. He gave us the Eucharist, His Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. He then tells us, “Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life and will live with Me forever in heaven” John 6. Like a mother with her child. Physical embrace is what’s needed. God knows that. It’s why Jesus gave us the Eucharist. We are touched by God every time we

June 24th & 25th Please join us in thanking Father Jim for his service here at St. Max’s. Coffee & cake will be served after all Masses. Come wish Father Jim well in his new Assignment!

During the weekend of July 1st – 2nd you will be able to enjoy some cool summer treats while helping a program that has made a huge impact on veterans across our state. WISCONSIN NEVER FORGOTTEN HONOR FLIGHT This program was initially designated to take veterans from World War I and II to Washington DC to visit the war memorials and other historical landmarks. It’s very emotional and healing. The cost to these veterans is a great big “0” but they must travel with a guardian. Their cost is around $500. Sometimes this cost can keep a veteran from taking advantage of this wonderful opportunity. The Military Ministry of our parish would like to sponsor at least one or more guardians. SO, on July 1st and 2nd we will be serving a variety of tasty, cool and refreshing summer treats. It will be a free will offering, so give generously. Anyone wishing to help with the treats may contact Mary at 715-340-7217 or Dianne at 715-383-6006. All proceeds will help support this worthy program. Hope to see you there!

We are in need of a volunteer who is willing to launder the cassocks and surpluses that the altar servers wear during Masses. This task only needs to be done 3 to 4 times per year. Prayerfully consider helping out with this behind the scenes ministry. Contact the church office for more information at 715.824.3380.
