It is a great pleasure to welcome you all to our Annual Green and White Concert.

This occasion has become a highlight of the school year. Coming as it does just after the Final Examinations it is an opportunity for all of us to relax and to enjoy an evening of music and culture.

I wish to thank all of you for coming tonight and for supporting our orchestra. In particular I wish to thank Ms Beatrice Chan for her unceasing work in promot-ing music within the school. Tonight I also wish to thank Wesley Wong Chung Hin (F. 6A), Chairman of the Music Society as well as all his committee members for their excellent preparation for this special function. I know that many staff mem-bers and students are also giving their time to ensure the smooth running of our concert.

Finally I wish to thank our conductor, Mr. Chow, and all the musicians and mem-bers of the choir for their many hours of dedication to reach the high standard of performance that we will enjoy tonight.

Have a relaxing evening!

I have great pleasure in welcoming you to the G&W Concert 2010. It was July 2002 when we had our first G&W Concert. If not for SARS, this year’s G&W Concert would have been the ninth concert for St. Joseph’s, instead of the eighth one.

Josephians have always been famous for their academic and sporting achieve-ments. I am happy to see that we also have a lot of musical talents. I can assure you a high quality concert tonight because I know the students have contributed a lot of time in their weekly practice and pre-concert rehearsals.

I wish to thank Mr. Chow Hing, the conductor of the School Orchestra and Ms. Beatrice Chan, the teacher-in-charge, for the time and effort they contributed over the years. Of course, the most important person behind the scenes is Brother Thomas. It is his continuous and unfailing support that brings the School Orches-tra to what it is today. Finally, I wish to thank Wesley Wong, the student organizer and the chairman of the Music Society, his dedicated and devoted executive committee and all the teachers and students who have contributed so much to make tonight’s function a success. With best wishes,

Leung Cheung HingPrincipal

Time flies! I am pleased to welcome all of you to the Green & White Concert again this evening to share the fruit and achievements of our student musicians. The Green & White Concert is actually a sonata. It always provides Josephians with a platform to expose themselves to the audience. It helps to develop Josephians’ musical talents and recapitulates the growth in musical experiences of all Josephians in an academic year. Here I would like to express my gratitude to our Supervisor, Brother Thomas Favier, and our Principal, Mr. C. H. Leung, for their support to the Music Society throughout the academic year. I am most thankful to all our 26 music instructors, all the workers of the production team and all student musicians who have been working hard for this concert. My special gratitude is given to Mr. Chow Hing, conductor of the School Orchestra, Mr. Cho Ka Wing, conductor of the Chinese Orchestra, Mr. Alex Tam, conductor of the Senior Choir, Ms Joanne Chan, conductor of the Junior Choir, and Wesley Wong, chairman of the Music Society.

Above all else, I am thankful to all of you for coming. The presence of every one of you here makes the concert a success. I look forward to seeing all of you at the Green & White Concert 2011! Now sit back and enjoy our entertainment prepared for you!

On behalf of the Music Society, I wish to extend my warmest welcome to you all for attending the Green and White Concert 2010.

Music has not only been a gift to us, it is also a heritage that we Josephians treasure a lot. Although most Josephians are versatile, we still have a lot of untapped and undiscovered talents nurtured in our campus. This concert actually provides us with a platform on which we can manifest our musical talents.

Tonight, we Josephians will proudly display how majestic music can be. However, this event will only be successful with the indispensible support from our Supervisor, Brother Thomas and our Principal, Mr. C.H Leung. Another key person is our teacher- in-charge, Ms. Beatrice Chan, whose dedication and advice is unlimited and unconditional. Furthermore, I would like to give my gratitude to the Organizing Committee and all the workers who contributed so much to this concert. In addition, credits should be given to all student musicians of St. Joseph’s. Without them, we will not even hear a single note tonight. Please give them a big hand.

Undoubtedly, your presence is always the most crucial key to tonight’s success, so again I thank you all for coming. I hope you will have a memorable night. Cheers for tonight and all the years to come!

Mr. Chow Hing studied violin with the famous violinist Lim Kek Han when he was young. He entered the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 1984, studied under Marcus Lehmann and various musicians, and became the concertmaster of the orchestra of the Academy. Before he graduated in 1988, he went to the Beijing Conservatory of Music to study with Professor Wang Zhen Shan.

Mr. Chow has played in many music organisations, such as the Lim Kek Han Philharmonic Orchestra, Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra and Macau Chamber Orchestra. He has also been the principal second violin in the Hong Kong Sinfonietta for years. He now engages himself in educating the youth.

St. Joseph’s College School Orchestra was established in February 2000, and is largely made up of students from Form 1 to Form 7 who receive their instrumental

training from instrumental classes offered by the school and from private tutors. The School Orchestra regularly performs in various school functions, such as the Green and White Day. The school orchestra is currently led by Ms Beatrice Chan under the baton of Mr. Chow Hing.

13

Page 14: GNW CONCERT 2010 BOOKLET

The Brass Ensemble consists of seven passionate students from the brass section of the school orchestra. Although it has recently been established, the group captured the second runner-up in this year’s Hong Kong Schools Music Festival. The ensemble provides opportunities for students with great enthusiasm in brass music to develop their interests. It is currently led by Ms. Beatrice Chan and trained by Mr. Yip Chun Kit.

14

Page 15: GNW CONCERT 2010 BOOKLET

The Melodica Band was established in 1967 by a group of Josephians who devoted themselves to music, including Mr. Julian Eramela, the current instructor-in-residence. Throughout the years, the Melodica Band has won numerous prizes in different competitions, including the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival. This year, the Melodica band has once again captured the Champion in both “Melodica Band – Secondary Schools” and “Melodica Ensemble – Secondary Schools” events.

The Junior Choir has a long history and tradition in our school. It consists of over fifty students mainly from Form One. It aims at promoting students’ interests in singing as well as music appreciation. The Junior Choir is led by Ms. Beatrice Chan and Ms. Jacky Lo, and is conducted by Ms. Joanne Chan.

Ms. Chan obtained her Bachelor degree at the Hong Kong Baptist University. She has been awarded two scholarships during her undergraduate studies. She then furthered her studies in piano at the Royal Northern College of Music in England with an entrance award, and obtained her Master of Music in Performance. Apart from music performance, music education has always been a spectrum that Ms. Chan is fond of. Ms. Chan now works as a piano tutor, accompanist and choral instructor.

16

Page 17: GNW CONCERT 2010 BOOKLET

The Senior Choir was formed in 2001 by a group of ten enthusiastic students who had great interests in singing. It aims at developing students’ interests in group singing and chamber music and provides a platform of vocal performance for senior students. The Choir attained 2nd runner-up in “Open Class Oratorio” in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival this year. It is led by Ms. Beatrice Chan, conducted by Mr. Tam Tin-lok Alex and Mr. Leung Lo On Christopher.

Mr. Tam completed his Bachelor of Music degree at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, majoring in vocal. He then completed the postgraduate opera course at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Mr. Tam obtained numerous scholarships throughout the years. He is very active in the opera field as well as the pop music field, composing and arranging for television, commercials and local pop singers.

Jeffrey Chong started learning the piano from pianist Lam Fai and violin from virtuoso Wang Fu Yong, at the age of seven and nine respectively. Apart from being a Trinity ATCL diploma holder in both instruments, Jeffrey also excels in playing the viola.

When Jeffrey passes the violin ATCL diploma with a distinction at the age of 15, he decided to further his music endeavours. He became a protégé of violinist Shinohara Shin from the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, and was nominated to the Hong Kong China Philharmonic Orchestra. Since then, he has participated in various concerts held in Hong Kong.

While studying in St. Joseph’s, Jeffrey was an active participant at the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival, capturing championships in all three instruments. He is the principal viola in the School Orchestra.

18

Page 19: GNW CONCERT 2010 BOOKLET

Since the age of six, the violin has brought Joseph to the magnificent and luring paradise of music. His main interest shifted to the piano when he started learning it at ten. Very quickly, he had acquired some musicianship and passed the ABRSM Grade Eight Examination with a distinction in two years. Now being a DipABRSM holder, Joseph has developed a wide range of repertoire from Bach to the Modern School. He has captured the champion in two solo classes in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival, while at the same time being very active in chamber music. Joseph is also a violinist in the School Orchestra.

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 – 1827)Symphony No. 5 -- “Fate”, Op. 671st Movement - Allegro con brioSymphony No. 5 in C minor is one of the most popular classical music compositions of all times. Composed by Beethoven during his mid-thirties, the first movement strikes the audience with the attention-arresting opening motif which consists of the rhythmical-melodic cell of solely four notes. The piece pictures the struggle with fate, with the key motif vividly describing destiny knocking at the door.

Camille Saint-Saëns (1835 – 1921)Piano Concerto No. 2 in G Minor, Op. 22

Piano Concerto No. 2 is probably Saint-Saëns’ most celebrated piano concerto. Completed in just three weeks, the piece demonstrates both classical and romantic elements. Instead of an exposition played by tutti, the piano solo begins the first movement with a long Bach-style exposition. The second movement exhibits Saint- Saëns’ unique musical wits with his energetic and delicate personality. The piece finally concludes at an expeditious tempo, pushing the concerto to a feverish climax.

Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809 – 1847)Wedding March from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Op. 61

As one of the most ubiquitous orchestral pieces ever written, Wedding March is the intermezzo between the acts of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, a famous play written by Shakespeare. The piece has become a frequently used recessional in Western weddings since being selected by Princess Victoria of England (Empress Frederick) as her wedding music. It opens with the eminent trumpet fanfare, lively portraying the Duke of Athens’ wedding of the play. The fairies are also distinctly depicted with the twittering flutes and strings.

24

Page 25: GNW CONCERT 2010 BOOKLET

Édouard Lalo (1823 - 1892)Symphonie Espagnole, Op. 211st Movement – Allegro non troppo

Composed for violin and orchestra in the Romantic Era, Lalo wrote the piece to pay tribute to the Spanish violinist Sarasate. As Tchaikovsky commented, the work is fresh and light, containing enjoyable piquant rhythms and melodies beautifully harmonized. The piece opens with a full-orchestra opening theme, stressing the colourful Spanish style throughout. It requires the soloist to display significant feats of violin dexterity.

Aram Khachaturian (1903 – 1978)Sabre Dance

Composed by Khachaturian during the Second World War to support the Communist Party in Armenia, Sabre Dance is a movement in the final act of ballet Gayane. Through the exceptionally pulsating rhythm expressing the themes of true friendship and the strength of love, Khachaturian proclaimed the indivisibility of happiness and national good. The music is now popularly adapted, including in the movie Kung Fu Hustle (《功夫》) and the award winning TV series The Simpsons.
