Moses Hogan (1957-2003) was a gifted instrumentalist, composer, andhighly prolific arranger who was almost solely responsible forestablishing concert spirituals as part of standard choral repertoire.

Hogan grew up in New Orleans, and his musicality was evident from ayoung age. An accomplished pianist by the age of nine, his musicalskills were put to use at the New Zion Baptist Church, where his fatherwas a bass singer and his uncle was an organist and the Minister ofMusic. It was there that Hogan began to learn about sacred choralsinging, including masses, cantatas, hymns, and spirituals.

Hogan’s formal musical education also began early with his enrollmentin the Xavier University Junior School of Music. In his sophomore yearof high school, he was accepted into the New Orleans Center forCreative Arts. He earned a full scholarship to the Oberlin Conservatoryof Music and graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in pianoperformance. He honed his skills as a pianist at Julliard School ofMusic and studied classical music in Vienna, Austria. Hogan wonseveral competitions as a solo pianist, most notably the 28th AnnualKosciuszko Foundation Chopin Competition in New York, where hetook first place. He was appointed artist in residence at LoyolaUniversity in 1993 and was the founder of three chorales: the New

World Ensemble, the Moses Hogan Chorale, and the Moses HoganSingers. The New World Ensemble was organized in 1980 as a volunteer choralgroup in Hogan’s hometown of New Orleans, and gave Hogan a chanceto exercise the full breadth of his musicianship as a conductor, pianist, and composer. It was at this time that Hogan began to notice thatconcert spiritual singing was being assimilated into gospel style singingand losing popularity in its own right.

With roots tracing back to 1871 and Fisk College’s Jubilee Singers(descendants of former slaves), concert spirituals drew onimprovisational folk spirituals, but were arranged for classically trainedvoices. Hogan committed himself to revitalizing and reviving thechoral concert spiritual tradition through his own arrangements. Heintroduced those arrangements, and the genre of concert spirituals, to aninternational audience with his volunteer touring chorus, the MosesHogan Chorale, which became the first African-American communitychorus to perform at Carnegie Hall.

Hogan’s third and final chorale, the Moses Hogan Singers, was asmaller group of nationally auditioned professional singers that focusedsolely on continuing the performance of concert spirituals. The MosesHogan Singers debuted at Alice Tully Hall, and went on to perform atvenues such as the Kennedy Center and Sydney Opera House.

Hogan’s arrangements, noted for their rich harmonic and rhythmiccomplexity, are now staples of choral repertoire and are widelyperformed across the globe. In the first half of our concert this evening,we honor Moses Hogan and his legacy, and the legacy of the peoplewho first created the spirituals to which he devoted so much of his life.

Will Todd (1970-present), jazz pianist and composer, was born inCounty Durham in North East England. Musically precocious, hestarted playing piano at the age of three and soon became fascinatedwith twelve bar blues. At age seven, he composed his first piece ofmusic and was singing in local choirs. He was awarded a full musicscholarship to Durham School and went on to earn a “HighCommended” Master of Music degree from the University of Bristol.Citing his most powerful influences as “singing choral music andlistening to music,” Todd says he listened to everything from classical

11

Page 12: to download the 2016 Spring Concert Booklet.

and opera, to jazz, folk music, big band, and rock. The drivinglyrhythmic, harmonically blues-based style of Dave Brubeck was one of hismost profound influences, and one which can be heard in Mass In Blue.Todd began seriously composing while still in his teens, writing songsand instrumental works, as well as attempting musicals and operas. Hiswork currently comprises choral works, opera and musical theatre, orchestral pieces, jazz and chamber works. His anthem The Call ofWisdom was commissioned by St Paul’s Cathedral and performed forHM Queen Elizabeth II (and broadcast around the world) for herDiamond Jubilee. His opera The Blackened Man won second prize inthe International Verdi Opera Competition, and his jazz-influencedarrangement of “Amazing Grace” was performed at President Obama’sInauguration Day prayer service.

One of his best known and most frequently performed works is Mass inBlue (originally titled Jazz Mass). Originally commissioned by theHertfordshire Chorus, Mass in Blue was first performed in July 2003,with Todd’s wife, Bethany Halliday, as soprano soloist and Toddhimself at the piano. Since then, it has been performed more than 200times at venues around the world, including the Lincoln Center in NewYork City.

In his Mass in Blue, Todd masterfully blends the traditional text of thestandard Latin mass (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, AgnusDei) with the most untraditional of choral forms -- jazz. And as heweaves together the blue notes and walking bass of the blues, thesyncopation and swing of ragtime and big-band, the call-and-responseof gospel, Afro-Cuban cross-rhythms, and Dave Brubeck’s intricatelyintertwining yet surprisingly fluid uncommon time-signatures, WillTodd creates a choral tapestry which not only reveals the timelessprinciples underlying sacred choral music, but also pays homage to thewide-ranging roots of that uniquely American art form, jazz.

The EASTON CHORAL ARTS SOCIETY is a non-profit organizationestablished to promote and encourage fine choral singing. The ultimate goal is toprovide artistic pleasure, education and satisfaction to performers and listeningaudiences alike. While the group is based in Easton, its singers come from all areasof the Eastern Shore. It is a volunteer organization with a Board of Directors elected from the membership. New chorus members with good voices and singingexperience are encouraged to make contact and audition. The group rehearsesweekly in the spring and fall preceding their concerts.

The organization has its origins in a choral group formed in 1977 known asthe Cathedral Community Choir under the direction of Florence Ruley. The groupwas incorporated in 1991 as the Easton Choral Arts Society, Inc.

ECAS is committed to bringing a high quality of musical culture to theEastern Shore, presenting choral work of varied styles, from classical to contemporary, with a wide range of audience appeal.

Through the talents of four directors over the years the chorus has prosperedin richness of choral performances. Appointed Artistic Director in 1986, Dr.Douglas I. Smith included a vast repertoire of music with orchestra, piano or a cappella over 24 years with the chorus. He brought brilliant new and seasonedsoloists in guest roles, providing a high calibre of musical entertainment. Dr.Smith’s untimely death in September 2010 was a great loss to the artistic community. He was held in high esteem, and honored for his commitment toEaston Choral Arts Society.

Wes Lockfaw was appointed Artistic Director in December 2010 by theBoard of Directors of ECAS, becoming the fifth director of the chorus.

ECAS has provided complimentary performances at Talbot HospiceFoundation’s annual Festival of Trees, and Easton Club East’s program for residents. An extensive library of choral work is available for loan to all choralorganizations in the area. Further support for the performing arts was given in2002, the 25th Anniversary of ECAS, with a gift of $2000 to the Avalon Theatretoward the purchase of a grand piano.

We are grateful for the support of the Talbot County Arts Council, the Mid-Shore Community Foundation, the Maryland State Arts Council, and to ourMembership, all of whom contribute to the success and financial stability of thegroup. We appreciate the advertisers who make this program booklet possible. Thanks to Christ Episcopal Church and The Rev. Dr. Ortt and congregation forrehearsal space.

The Board of Directors of ECAS and the membership thank our supportersfor the opportunity to offer a unique musical presence to this area.
