Western Oregon Look For Second Trophy This SeasonMen’s Tournament Preview

LACEY, Wash. – The only that is certain entering the 2016 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Championships is that nothing is certain.

In the first five years of the tournament, only twice has the top seed emerged as the champion. And with only the No. 1 seed secured before the final week of the season, there are no guarantees for any team as action begins on Thursday.

If there is any certainty in the tournament field it is that the No. 1 seed will be hard to beat. Western Oregon won its second straight GNAC regular season championship with an 18-2 record (25-3 overall) and at one point owned a 13-game win streak. The Wolves are currently the No. 1 ranked team in the West Region and this week ranked fourth in the D2SIDA Division II Media Poll and No. 6 in the NABC Division II Poll.

Led by two-time GNAC Player of the Year Andy Avgi, who averages 20.6 points per game, the Wolves have succeeded with defense and taking care of the ball. Western Oregon is limiting teams to 69.2 points per game and leads the GNAC in steals (8.64 per game), paced by Tanner Omlid’s 2.38 steals per game, which ranks ninth in Division II. On the offensive end, the Wolves are second in Division II in fewest turnovers with 254, averaging just over nine per game.

While Western Oregon hopes to return a No. 1 seed to the podium, Seattle Pacific aims to continue its tournament dominance. The No. 4 seed, the Falcons are the three-time defending champions and won last year as the No. 2 seed. Seattle Pacific finished the regular season at 21-7 and tied with Alaska Anchorage for third in the GNAC standings at 14-6. The Falcons enter the tournament ranked No. 24 in the D2SIDA Division II Media Poll.

The Falcons are the strongest defensive team in the league. They enter the tournament leading Division II in rebounding margin (12.5) and are ranked second in three-point defense (.292), fourth in scoring defense (64.9 points allowed per game) and 13th in field goal defense (.401). First Team All-GNAC forward Mitch Penner leads the team offensively, averaging 18 points per game, while senior center Gilles Dierickx is fourth in the league in field goal shooting (.572) and fifth in rebounding (6.9 per game).

Alaska used a strong second half to secure the No. 2 seed, winning eight of its last nine games. The Nanooks have also benefitted from stingy defense, ranking 16th in Division II in field goal defense (.403), 18th in turnover margin (+4.7) and 25th in scoring margin (10.5). Alaska also leads the GNAC and is 21st in Division II in assists, averaging 17 per game.

Senior forward Travante Williams earned First Team All-GNAC honors. The transfer from Adams State College ranks third in the GNAC in scoring at 18.4 points per game and is second with 7.6 rebounds per game. Defensively, Williams leads the GNAC and is eighth in Division II with 2.39 steals per game. Senior center Almic Hadzisehovic is the conference’s most accurate shooter with his .622 field goal percentage ranking 13th in Division II.

The No. 3 seed in the tournament, Alaska Anchorage brings a very athletic lineup to Lacey. The Seawolves are led by junior transfer guard Sekou Wiggs, who was named First Team All-GNAC selection and the league’s Newcomer of the Year. Wiggs leads the GNAC and is ninth in Division II in scoring at 24.2 points per game while also ranking third in rebounding with 7.2 boards per contest. He is bolstered by the league’s top rebounder in junior Corey Hammell (10.2 rebounds per game) and one of the top three-point shooters in Diante Mitchell (.453).

The Seawolves enters the week ranked 28th in Division II in scoring margin, outscoring teams by an average of 10.1 points per game, but

do their most damage at the free throw line. Alaska Anchorage is second in Division II, having made 80.2 percent of their free throws, and leads the nation with 680 free throws made.

Central Washington is the No. 5 seed and is one of the most potent offensive teams in the league. The Wildcats enter the tournament second in the GNAC in scoring (84.0 points per game), field goal percentage (.475) and three-point percentage (.374). The Wildcats are also a solid defensive team, ranking third in rebounding (39.4 rebounds per game) while ranking 25th in Division II with 4.6 blocked shots per game.

Senior forward Joseph Stroud picked up First Team All-GNAC honors and was selected as the league’s Defensive Player of the Year. The Wildcats’ leading scorer and rebounder with averages of 16.6 points and 6.8 rebounds per game, Stroud enters the week 11th in Division II with 2.68 blocked shots per game. Senior guard Gary Jacobs adds significant support, averaging 14.2 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.

Western Washington enters as the No. 6 seed, but proved a year ago that anything can happen in the tournament as it advanced to the championship game as the No. 5 seed. The Vikings lead the GNAC with an average of 84.1 points per game while ranking third in the GNAC in field goal percentage (.473).

The Vikings are the only GNAC team with three players in the conference’s top-10 in scoring. Senior forward Jeffrey Parker is fifth with 17.7 points per game and led the GNAC with 2.48 three-pointers made per game, earning First Team All-GNAC honors. Senior guard Ricardo Maxwell is seventh at 16.1 points per game while senior guard Kyle Impero is ninth at 15.1 points per game while also ranking fourth in rebounding at seven per game.

Western Oregon’s Andy Avgi is the two-time GNAC Player of the Year and led the Wolves to their second straight regular season title.

Surging Seawolves Look To Repeat As ChampionsWomen’s Tournament Preview

LACEY, Wash. - Alaska Anchorage, the reigning GNAC and regular season champions, enter as the heavy favorites in the GNAC Women’s Basketball Championships.

Five other teams look for an opportunity to dethrone the Seawolves, including No. 2 seed Western Washington. The Vikings were tournament champions in both 2013 and 2014 and are one of just two Division II teams to defeat the Seawolves this season. Alaska Anchorage and Western Washington met in the finals last season, with the Seawolves coming out ahead 71-58.

The women’s tournament officially tips off on Thur., Mar. 3, at 5:15 p.m. Pacific time with the opening game between No. 3 Montana State Billings and No. 6 Northwest Nazarene.

Led by GNAC Player of the Year Megan Mullings, the Seawolves are poised for a repeat run for the tournament title. Mullings leads the GNAC in shooting percentage (.629) and ranks fourth in scoring (16.6 points per game). She also leads the Seawolves with 6.1 rebounds per game and 50 blocks.

As a team, the Seawolves put together a dominant season with a 31-2 overall record, 18-2 GNAC. They lead the league in both scoring offense and scoring defense, scoring 81 points per game while allowing just 53.6 points per contest. Their scoring margin of 27.5 is second in all of Division II. Alaska Anchorage ranks first in the nation in assists (685), assists per game (20.8), steals (468), steals per game (14.2) and turnovers forced per game (24.45).

First Team All-GNAC selection Jenna Buchanan became one of the top three-point shooters in the nation this year, ranking fifth in three-pointers made (98), 13th in three-pointers attempted (220), 15th in three-point shooting percentage (44.5) and 17th in three-pointers made per game (2.97).

Western Washington, the No. 2 seed, brings with tons of experience to conference tournament. The Vikings won the tournament in 2013 and 2014 and were the runners-up last season. Western Washington leads the GNAC in shooting percentage (.475), rebounding defense (31.4) and blocked shots (154). With a 16-4 conference record, 20-8 overall, and a win over Alaska Anchorage this

season, the Vikings have proven they can beat any other team.Senior center Kayla Bernsen was named the GNAC Defensive

Player of the Year after leading the conference in blocked shots (84). She was also first in offensive rebounds (3.9) and ranked third in field goal percentage (.538). Junior guard Taylor Peacocke was selected to the conference’s first team after finishing second in scoring during the regular season (16.8 ppg). Peacocke scored in double figures in all 27 games she played this season.

Montana State Billings was edged by Western Washington on the final day of the regular season for the No. 2 seed, but still finished strong in third. The Yellowjackets were the surprise team of the year after being picked to tie for seventh in the GNAC Preseason Coaches Poll. With a 15-5 GNAC record, 19-9 overall, the Yellowjackets proved many wrong.

Junior guard Alisha Breen was selected First Team All-GNAC after leading the Yellowjackets with 16.5 points per game, good for fifth in the GNAC. She also pulled down 5.5 rebounds per game and shot well from behind the arc at 38.9 percent. Janiel Olson made a comeback from an ACL injury to lead the Yellowjackets with 8.3 rebounds per game, ranking second in the conference.

Simon Fraser grabbed the No. 4 seed with a 13-7 conference record, 15-10 overall. The Clan ended the season with its biggest win of the year on the road at Alaska Anchorage, defeating the Seawolves 67-66. They enter the tournament with longest active winning streak of three games, showing more about the parity in the conference more than anything else.

Junior guard Ellen Kett is one the biggest reasons for the Clan’s success this season. She was selected to the All-GNAC First Team after ranking second in all of Division II in three-point shooting (.495), third in assists per game (7.3) and fourth in total assists (182). Kett also recorded the GNAC’s only triple-double of the season in the Clan’s victory over Alaska Anchorage. Elisa Homer adds another scoring threat from the outside, leading the GNAC in three-point shooting and ranking third in Division II in three-pointers made per game (3.76).

Central Washington rode the second best defense in the GNAC to a 10-10 conference record, 17-11 overall. The Wildcats allowed just 55.7 points per game and ranked second in the conference in field goal percentage defense (.369), rebounding defense (31.7) and blocked shots per game (4.6). The Wildcats’ season includes wins over four of the five playoff teams including Western Washington, Montana State Billings, Simon Fraser and Northwest Nazarene.

Jasmin Edwards and Jasmine Parker combine for a tough one-two punch on both sides of the ball. Edwards averages 11.7 points per game with 5.4 assists and 1.6 steals. She ranks third in the GNAC with an assist/turnover ratio of 1.5. Parker averages 10.8 points per game, 7.5 rebounds with a .527 shooting percentage. She is also second in blocks at 2.5 per game.

Northwest Nazarene used aggressive defense and a fast-paced offense to reach the conference tournament once again. The Crusaders pressured teams inside, drawing contact and consistent trips to the free-throw line. As a team, they shot 76.9 percent from the charity stripe to lead the GNAC. The Crusaders are also ranked second in scoring offense (71.3) and steals per game (9.6).

Taylor Simmons helped carry the load for the Crusaders, receiving second team honors. She averaged 11.9 points per game, 4.2 assists and was persistent defensively with 3.2 steals per game, good for ninth in Division II. Her teammate, guard Ellie Logan, used her slashing ability inside to get to the free throw line 123 times. She led the GNAC and ranked 14th in the nation with an .886 shooting percentage from the charity stripe.

Senior forward Megan Mullings was named GNAC Player of the Year after leading Alaska Anchorage to a 31-2 regular season record.
