First of all I just want to let you know that I have had a fantastic first year here at GMG. What a great place to be! I have really enjoyed getting to know the students, staff, and parents. I AM, of course, still trying to get all the names and faces down! I do have a few things I want to address as the year is coming to an end. 1. If your child is currently taking medications at school for any reason, they will need to be picked up from school on

the last day by a PARENT or GARDIAN. They will not be released to students. If the medication is not picked up it will be thrown away THAT day. NO medication will be saved over until the next year. This includes inhalers, pills, creams, lotions, and injectables.

2. If you have any health care concerns about your child, please let me know and fill out the appropriate forms at registration next year. We will make appropriate accommodations for your student if it is needed.

3. If your child has a food allergy or intolerance you will need to note that on the appropriate registration form. There is a required form that needs to be filled out by your child(ren)’s doctor. It will then be kept on file in the health office in order to accommodate your child(ren)’s unique dietary needs. This form will be available at registration and needs to be turned into the school before or on the first day. There are state rules on this so please don't hesitate to ask questions, and I will try to answer them or get you to the appropriate resources regarding dietary issues.

4. Immunizations will need to be up to date by next school year as well. It is a state law. It is also audited by the state yearly. The summer is a good time to get your child caught up on routine check ups and exams including well child check ups, dentist visits and eye exams. Be sure that they have current immunization coverage. We also will need to have a copy of the immunizations and physicals on file at the school so please be sure to have your child(ren)'s physician send a copy to the school or give you an extra. This is true, too, for the eye and dental exams. We keep them on file here at school. You will be getting a letter reminding you if you have children going into Kindergarten or 7th grade as they will be due for the required booster shots. I will also be sending some other letters of new state requirements home so please take note of those if you do receive one.

5. I am going to try to be at registration to update health plans and answer and address any health concerns you may have. If your child has a current health plan or IEP please see me and be sure to let me know of any medication changes or modifications that need to be made.

I hope you all have a great and safe summer!!

Book Fair “Under the Sea” at the Library!

By Mrs. Henningsen

March 16-19 the elementary library was turned into a book store with hundreds of books and other items from Scholastic. Students and parents had fun visiting the book fair and purchasing items to take home. The book fair helped to get reading materials into the hands of students while raising money for the library. There were 525 books purchased at the fair. Parents and students donated many books to teachers’ classrooms. The profit from the fair totaled $1,285.00 in books and cash. The library will use the money to purchase books. Thanks to P.I.E. group members who graciously donated their time to help with the book fair!

The GMG Math Magicians proudly represented GMG in the AEA 267 sixth grade Math Bee held in Marshalltown. GMG students qualified for the state competition to be held in Cedar Falls on May 12. The team met once a week from September-April to learn basic algebra, geometry, statistics, and other problem solving concepts and sharpen their math skills for the competition, which is held each year for area sixth graders. News from Kindergarten By Mrs. Koster

This spring the kindergarten and first graders were able to attend the play “Flat Stanley”. It was a wonderful experience to travel to Des Moines Civic Center. The students were amazed by the size of the auditorium and the number of other students attending the play. They also enjoyed seeing a familiar story being played out by actors and actresses. After seeing the play, kindergarteners talked and wrote about what they would do if they were flat. Kindergarteners have also been busy learning how to form a scientific hypothesis. They have learned to do this by doing simple science experiments. The students talked about what they have learned and then predict what they think will happen during the experiment. Our favorite experiments so far this year have been soaking marshmallows in different liquids, and starting seeds. The seeds are taking much longer to grow than the students expected. Kindergarteners are working hard to wrap up the year. In May we will learn about farming, and our home state of Iowa. We will continue to work hard on our sight words and reading our sight word books. We are excited about track and field day on May 20.

Dress Code

As warm weather approaches, we want to remind everyone that it is important to consider everyone’s feelings. Dress codes are established so that other people you have to work with feel comfortable. In school and business you have to dress in an appropriate manner so others who visit your business or classroom are not offended.

GMG’s dress code is fairly simple: undergarments should not be visible, at least two inches of material should cover the shoulder, shorts should have an inseam of 2 inches and the mid torso should be covered when your arms are at your sides.

Please notice what your children are wearing when they leave the house in the morning. Your help is appreciated.

Reading We continue to try to improve

our reading comprehension scores. GMG’s reading percentages lag behind our math and science scores. Please take time this summer to schedule reading

into your daily activities. Read a book or magazine with your child and discuss the plot, characters and author’s writing. Reading is the most important part of your child’s future success. The better he/she reads, the easier any new lessons will become.

Summer School We will be initiating an

intensified summer school program for students that need extra instruction in reading and mathematics. You will be notified by mail by May 20th if we feel your son/daughter would benefit from attending this program.

The summer school schedule will run from May 26—29, June 29—July 2, and July 6—9. Classes will be on from 10:00 to 12:00 noon. Contact the school if you feel your child would like to participate in this valuable summer education session.

Measure of Academic Progress (Map Testing)

GMG gave the spring MAP tests for reading, math, language and science to all students in grades 7-11 starting on April 22nd. The testing is scheduled to be completed by May 1st.

The computerized MAP testing battery is GMG’s second standard measure of assessment for our students and will be reported yearly on the District’s Annual Progress Report.

Professional Development Activities

The GMG staff continues to work hard at improving their teaching skills. They have focused on learning how to increase the use technology in their classrooms and building reading strategies that are proven to increase students’ reading comprehension. Over the past several years, they have been trained in using graphic organizers and have implemented “read and think alouds”. This year we have been working on incorporating the “common core” into our curriculum. Staff has been receiving training about analyzing the “depth of knowledge” required and expressed by our students in daily assignments.

REMEMBER, the best preparation for the ACT is taking the most challenging and rigorous curriculum while in high school. “EVERY TIME YOU GO TO CLASS, YOU ARE PREPARING FOR THE ACT.” The student who takes World Literature and Advanced Writing in English, Pre-Calculus and Calculus in Math, and Chemistry and Physics in Science increases his/her chances of earning a good composite score.

IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER FOR COLLEGE-BOUND SENIO RS AND THEIR PARENTS May 1, 2015: Notify all colleges you have applied to, been admitted to, and/or paid a deposit to of your final decision. You will need to inform each

that you plan to attend in the fall or that you decline their offer of admission. Do this in writing to each. May 10, 2015: Robert D. Blue Scholarship Application deadline at www.rdblue.org. July 1, 2015: FAFSA deadline for Iowa scholarships and grants. [Grants include the (1) Iowa Tuition Grant, (2) Iowa Vocational-Technical Tuition

Grant, (3) Kibbie Grant, and (4) Barber and Cosmetology Arts and Sciences Tuition Grant. Anticipated fall application deadline for the Iowa National Guard Educational Assistance Grant.

REVIEW STUDENT AID REPORT (SAR) / MAKE CORRECTONS : Following submission of your FAFSA you will receive your Student Aid Report, or SAR, which summarizes the information you submitted on the FAFSA. The SAR is generated by the U.S. Department of Education after your FAFSA has been processed and officially notifies you that your FAFSA was received. Check your SAR for mistakes. If it’s accurate, keep the form for your records. If there are errors, go to the FAFSA website, login using your PIN and make corrections. ‘Verification’ is a request to verify income and tax information before an official award letter can be given. If you receive a ‘verification’ request, don’t be alarmed. There are two options to complete ‘verification’. The first option is to request a tax transcript from the IRS at www.IRS.gov at least 3 weeks after filing your taxes. The second option is the use the IRS Data Retrieval tool through the FAFSA form by visiting www.FAFSA.gov and clicking on “Make Corrections.” Taxes are available 3 weeks after taxes have been submitted to the IRS.

COMPARE AWARD LETTERS: You will receive an award letter from each college you have been admitted to and that has received your FAFSA results. The letter is part of the school’s financial aid package, which may also include loan documents. Specific types of financial aid you are eligible for if you attend that college are outlined in the letter. Each award letter is subject to changes, especially if you estimated numbers on your FAFSA. Read the letter thoroughly and make sure you

understand each type of financial aid offered to you. Enrolling less than full-time might reduce or eliminate some of the financial aid you are offered. Some awards have special criteria, such as residency or performance standards.

Aid may be a combination of funds you will not need to repay along with loans that you do have to repay. Read the instructions carefully. Some colleges will ask you to sign and return the letter by a certain date. This does not commit you to attend; it

merely reserves the funds. NOTE: Some colleges will complete this process online through your college e-mail account. Interpreting your award letter can be confusing. The award letter details direct cost, indirect cost, and kinds of financial aid you are being offered.

Every award package is unique to the student and the school providing the package. You will want to compare different award packages to determine your real costs at each institution.

FINALIZING YOUR FINANCIAL AID: Once you have determined which school is the best fit for you, both academically and financially, you must finalize your financial aid.

Notify Each Institution Sign the award letter of the school you have selected and return any required paperwork. Notify other schools that you will not be attending,

Payment Plan If you have unmet expenses talk to the financial aid office about setting up a payment plan.

Student Loan Documents If you are taking out student loans you are required to complete additional documentation to secure your funding. This documentation may

be included within your award letter or may be accessed through the financial aid office or your online student account. You can also visit www.studentloan.gov.

Acceptance on Award letter and amount verification Signed Master Promissory Note (MPN) Completion of Entrance Counseling

BORROW WISELY: Student loans are a form of financial aid that must be repaid. Loans can be a helpful – and sometimes necessary – source to help fund your education. You should consider borrowing only after you have exhausted other financial aid. Before you borrow, add up all the loans you will need throughout college. Then determine if you can afford to repay them, plus

pay all other living expenses, on the starting salary for the career field that you have chosen. Check out the budget calculators at www.ICANsucceed.org/caculators or visit www.studentloan.org/gameplan for a simulated estimate based on your career.

Find out if interest will accrue while you are in school and if your payments can be deferred until after you graduate. Visit www.ICANsucceed.org/payforcollege to compare loan types.

Understand Your Limits. You should not borrow more than the starting salary for the career you intend to pursue after college. For example, if your expected starting salary is $25,000, you should only borrow an amount between $18,543 and $27, 814.
