Microsoft Outlook has become part of the life of most of the software professionals. Outlook

screen is in front of us for almost 50% of a day

Just got a silly thought to integrate our personal mails like Gmail to outlook

Main advantages are...

1. Once mails are downloaded to outlook, you can access the downloaded mails even when

you are offline/have no internet access.

This is not possible with Gmail.

2. Outlook is easy to use and organize.

3. Changes are integrated and synched with Gmail server real time.

Note:

Some companies might have policies to block accessing personal mails in companies.

Please check your corporate policy before configuring this.

I tried this from my personal laptop and it works cool

Step 1: Gmail settings:

Click on settings button at Top Right corner.

Go to tab "Forwarding and POP/IMAP", select the options highlighted and save.

Step 2: Outlook settings:

I am using outlook 2007. Screens may vary little bit in advanced versions.

Go to control panel, open "Mail" and click on E-mail accounts.

Alternatively, You can navigate directly from outlook menu Tools->Options->Mail setup->E-

mail accounts.

Click on create new, Select highlighted option and proceed.

In the next popup, select Manual configuration and proceed.

Select Internet mail and proceed.

Enter your name, mail ID, password and server details as shown below.

Click on more settings and enter port and encryption details in Advanced tab. Click next after

this. (If port 465 doesn't work, you can try with 587)

Click Finish.

Now you could find your Gmail in outlook. All your mails, personal folders structure etc are

synched to outlook.

First use may take some time based on your mailbox size and internet speed.

You can try this out in other E-mail clients like Apple, thunderbird etc.

But even if this works, I suggest not to configureas it may cause compliance issues.

What I find amusing is that the client I do most of my work for at the moment has ditched

outlook in favour of corporate Gmail.

Woow...Thats strange!!!

Does Gmail has separate product for corporate similar to outlook or you are talking about

the public Gmail domain? If public, is it safe for a company to go ahead with a public

domain?

And you know, If you have smart phone/iphone, you can configure any mail server in your

mobile I am ok to do this, if the hand set is company allocated as company also expect

same data security

But be careful with 2G/3G/4G charges if no WIFI

Just a warning, is you should not use/leave your google password on your local machinefor the setup and instead have Google issue a "one-time" password for that account. The

benefit is that if you ever lose your local PC/device where this is setup you can revoke the

password used by the device instead of having to reset your gmail account. In addition

the random password generated by google is about 16 characters long. I also strongly

recommend two-factor authentication for your google account also.

You can create a pst file with password and select the option to ask for password every time

you open outlook
