Key components for communications satellites are the power amplifiers in the telecommunications payload. Four decades

of experience enable Tesat-Spacecom to provide Travelling Wave Tube Amplifiers (TWTAs) for space

applications. Today, Tesat-Spacecom has a 50 percent shareof the world market for power amplifiers. In numerous

communications satellites Tesat-Spacecom TWTAs have now accumulated almost 100 million operating hours in space. TWTA lifetimes of up to 18 years are usual.

Travelling Wave Tube Amplifiers

The TWTA is a key element for a satellite transponder. Tesat-Spacecom has provided TWTAswhich satisfied requirements ofNASA, ESA, Intelsat, Inmarsat,European, Asian and US commer-cial and military programs. Startingfrom frequencies at 1.5 GHz up to60 GHz, Tesat-Spacecom hasTWTAs on hand with RF outputpower ranges from 10 W up to 450 W. <

Laser Crosslinks

The series of successful opticalcommunications with Tesat LCTsbetween the U.S. NFIRE and theGerman TerraSAR-X satellites seta milestone in 2008. The data rateof 5'500 Mbps is a new landmarkfor intersatellite communication.

Both satellites operate in low Earth orbits and come closer than 5'000 km several times a day. Atthose occasions laser links can beestablished for up to 20 minutesduration. When closing such a linkthe main job is to aim the commu-nication laser beam precisely ontothe distant target satellite andkeep it there while it passes by ata speed of about 25'000 km/h.This corresponds to a person onground aiming at an individualwindow of an aircraft operating athigh altitude.

With this successful demon-stration Germany has taken thelead in a strategic field of techno-logy: Laser Terminals will be im-portant elements of the future highperformance data relay satelliteinfrastructure that supports real-time data links from ground toEarth observation satellites,

reduction program for all new lasercomms technologies, includingextensive radiation and in-orbitvibration validation.

Today Tesat Laser Terminals havenot only communication perfor-mance characteristics far superiorto those of earlier developments ofthe European Space Agency ESA,they are also much smaller andmore efficient.

Laser Crosslink Technology

Link robustness and immunityagainst sunlight are decisive factorsfor security applications, disasterrelief or commercial connectivityproviders. Homodyne BPSK (binaryphase shift keying) is superior to allother optical modulation schemesand offers highest sensitivity forboth communication and tracking. It is also the only modulationscheme providing full immunityagainst sunlight since electricalfiltering by homodyne detection ismore selective than optical coatingsused in direct detection filtering. These Tesat advantages apply fullyto LEO and GEO intersatellite links.

Optical receiver

scientific missions or high flyingaircraft with global, ubiquitouscoverage.

The development of thoseterminals has been sponsored bythe Ministry of Economy andTechnology (Bundesministerium fürWirtschaft und Technologie (BMWi))via the German Space Agency(DLR Raumfahrtagentur);the Ministry of Defence (Bundes-ministerium der Verteidigung(BMVg)) has advocated andmanaged the cooperation with theU.S. DoD for the in-orbitdemonstration of the system.

Pioneering Telefunken engineers inBacknang built optical com-munications with the first freespace and fibre optical transceiversduring the 1960s. From these rootsTesat-Spacecom engineers havebeen working continuously onapplying this to optical satellitecommunications.

Unique Competitive Edges for ourCustomers convinced Motorolain 1998 to contract Tesat for theCelestri and Teledesic programs tobuild 500 terminals for a LEO con-stellation. In the Teledesic program,Tesat performed an extensive risk

LCT terminal mounted onto TerraSAR-X

Tesat Laser Terminals have successfully been tested for

broadband data transmission in space between the

German TerraSAR-X and the U.S.-NFIRE Satellite

For system level testing a mostadvanced testbed was set up forthe verification of all laser crosslinkperformance features undersimulated operational in-orbitparameters.

Laser diode reliability and availabilityis today a key parameter. Startingwith SILEX, Tesat has continuouslyrun qualification tests on statisticallysignificant samples of all relevantlaser diode manufacturers. Largeand prominent laser diode suppliershave pulled out of the market sincethe dot-com times. Yet over theyears Tesat accomplished to forman exclusive supplier network and aunique know-how base of qualityscreening & mounting. Sustainedavailability and technology improve-ment is secured by embedding theTesat supply in a German govern-ment backbone of institutions forcar industry.

A unique ultra-compact receivercombines all optical elements forreceive and transmit beamseparation as well as local oscillatorsuperposition. This miniature sizeelement (about 10 cm height)replaces a complete optical benchof standard designs. Small sizeallows excellent alignment precisionand rock-solid long-term stabilityover the mission life.

Receiver and RF ElectronicsHeritage

The Tesat optical terminal buildsupon the SILEX receivers heritageand a full toolbox in the RF telecom-munications field: Amplifiers, Linea-rizers, electrical power conditioners, controllers and TM/TC interfaces.

17RF modulator driver

Outlook

Tesat will deliver in 2008 the nextgeneration first flight model to theTanDEM-X satellite under contractof the German Space Agency. This long range model is capable to provide links to and from geo-stationary (GEO) relay satellitesand unprecedented data rates of2'800 Mbps.

These next generation terminals areplanned to be installed as GEOrelay stations for example onAlphasat and the European DataRelais Satellite.

GEO relay anchor satellites withoptical terminals will provide nearlyuninterrupted data links to low Earthorbiting satellites or other scientificmissions (Moon, Mars) that requirereal-time data links with the useron-ground. The need of multipleground stations around the globeand frequency license obstructionsare then obsolete. This capability isa precondition for numerous com-mercial and scientific missions butalso for many security-sensitiveapplications (environmentalmonitoring, disaster relief, bordersecurity, defense).
