Parents and Students, Welcome back to another exciting school year at Glendale High School. Furthermore, I thank you for sending your student to Glendale, part of the Glendale Union High School District. We have continued to be recognized by the Arizona Department of Education as an “A” School. This once again is due to the efforts of all students, parents, teachers, and school community working together to accomplish our school goals. We are very proud of what we have accomplished and feel that every student that comes to our school will be prepared for college or career. I look forward to working with each of you again this year and am enthusiastic about what we will accomplish.

Sincerely,

Kevin Cashatt Principal

TRAVEL REDUCTION The 1988 Arizona Legislature passed an Air Quality Bill which requires employers (including school systems) with more than 100 full-time employees/students to reduce singe car occupancy travel to and from work or school site by 5%. In order to comply with this legal requirement, each Glendale Union High School District School has developed a plan to accomplish this goal. The plan includes encouraging car pooling, van pooling, alternate travel (bicycles), preferred parking. It also includes restricting student parking to upper-grade students. Each school site may use a variety of methods to reach this goal. Methods may vary from site to site. Community understanding and cooperating will help all Glendale Union High School District schools meet the letter and the spirit of the law. STUDENT INSURANCE A student Accident & Health Insurance Plan will be made available for purchase by the student at the beginning of each school year. This policy will be between the student, his family and the insurance company. The school will only be involved in reporting the accident or injury. A fine of $.10 per week is assessed for overdue materials. The Media Center is operated for your needs, interests and convenience. Come in to visit often and take advantage of its many resources. Page 9: GLENDALE HIGH SCHOOL

HEALTH CENTER – 623-435-6203 The Health Center is located in the administration building and is staffed by a registered nurse to serve as a health counselor and advisor on student health problems and illnesses. When accidents or illnesses occur during school hours students must report to the nurse. Emergency care will be given according to the standing orders! Any further care is the responsibility of the parents. Also, students who are ill or injured can only go home if a parent or emergency contact is contacted by phone from the nurse. When possible, the student should report to class before going to the nurse. Missing class with an excuse of illness, unless the student has visited the Health Center, will be treated as truancy. It will be the nurse’s decision whether or not to permit a student to go home. The Health Center provides information in such areas as immunization, communicable diseases, hearing and vision, and chronic health problems. Injuries and Medical Release If you are injured on campus in sports or a school sponsored activity on or off campus, or on the way to or from school, you are required to immediately notify the coach, teacher, supervisor, or nurse of the injury. Any student excused from PE or athletics by a doctor must be released by the same doctor before participating in the activity again. The medical release must be brought to the Nurse’s Office and filed with your health record. Students that have been absent from school with an infectious or contagious disease must have a doctor’s release and check back in through the Health Center for re-entering school. Medications According to State Law, nurses are not allowed to dispense medications without doctor’s orders. Under certain circumstances, when it is necessary for a student to take medication during the school hours, the nurse may cooperate with the family physician as long as the following requirements are satisfied:

1. The medication must be prescribed by a physician. 2. There must be a written order on file from the physician and parent to administer the medication. 3. The medication must be in the original prescription bottle with orders as prescribed by the doctor AND brought in by the

guardian. 4. ASPIRIN and NON-ASPIRIN will not be dispensed without permission of the student’s parent or legal guardian.

NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE TO THIS PROCEDURE.

COUNSELING & CAREER SERVICES (623) 435-6207

Office Hours: 7:00 am – 3:30 pm M-F

Justin Tarver Assistant Principal Student Services

Glendale High School’s Counseling Department goals include assessing each student’s interests and aptitudes, planning an academic program with the student and his/her parents regarding high school graduation requirements and progress, and developing a post-high school academic plan. Upon enrolling at Glendale a student is assigned a counselor who will assist the student throughout his/her high school year. Counselors assist students in selecting courses, determining academic and career goals, and resolving personal social issues. Students are encouraged to make extensive use of the Counseling and Career Centers. Counselors will meet with each student to plan/review a program of studies to meet the student’s individual career, academic, and personal goals. Parental input is strongly encouraged. Each student will complete an Arizona Education and Career Action Plan (ECAP) which will allow students to review, track and update academic, career, postsecondary, and extracurricular goals. All students are scheduled for six credit earning classes each semester. Any exceptions must meet with administrative approval. The counselor and career specialist are available from 7:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. A student may drop in to talk with a counselor before and after school or during the student’s lunch without having a pass from class. A student may also go to the counseling office and sign up to see his/her counselor then the counselor will send for the student with a counseling center pass. Emergencies are acceptable at any time. Because counselors are often working with classroom groups of students and not always available in their office, parents are encouraged to call to make an appointment regarding their student. Counseling services available include: 1. Academic planning 2. Career/College information 3. College testing information 4. Financial Aid and scholarship information 5. Personal problem solving 6. Study skills information 7. Schedule adjustments/changes due to computer error or class leveling. Criteria for student-initiated schedule changes are as follow: 1. Computer or clerical error 2. Summer schedule credit 3. Doctor’s request If the request meets one of the criteria listed above, the student may pick up a schedule change request form in the Counseling Center. Completed forms must be retuned to the secretary in the Counseling Center, and the student should then make an appointment to see his/her counselor concerning the request. Note: The completed request form is not a schedule change; it is a request that will be considered by the counselor and administrator. GHS may initial a schedule change for reasons including: 1. College catalogs and admissions requirements are available by accessing individual campus websites. HOMEWORK It is the belief of the Governing Board that worthwhile, appropriate homework is an important aspect of high school education. Students attend a specific day assigned to each subject area: Monday=English, Tuesday=Math, Wednesday=Science, Thursday=Social Studies/P.E./Languages, Friday=Electives. Michelle Scott Assistant Principal Attendance / Discipline

TO REPORT AN ABSENCE If you are absent from school, a parent/guardian must call the attendance office at (623) 435-6201 or (623) 435-6233 (Spanish/Espanol), within 24 hours. You may call the office at any time day or night and leave a message. Please follow up with a note from the parent/guardian upon the students return to school. Calls and notes should state the student’s name, ID#, date of excused absence, and the reason for the absence. Any absence not excused within 24 hours will be considered a truancy and subject to disciplinary action. TARDIES Tardies will ONLY be excused for doctor, dentist, or court appointments. Supporting documents are required to have the tardy excused. Acceptable documentation includes doctor/dentist note, receipts and care instruction. Handwritten notes will not be accepted. LATE ARRIVAL AND EARLY DISMISSAL Students who do not carry a full schedule of classes are not to loiter on campus during their free time or periods for which they have no class scheduled. This does not preclude students from using the library or working on assignments while under the supervision of a teacher. CLOSED CAMPUS Glendale High School is a CLOSED CAMPUS. Students may not leave campus at any time during the school day without first obtaining parent/guardian permission and checking out through the attendance office. If your parent requests you to leave campus, you must check out through the attendance office, where you will be issued a Permit to Leave Campus. Students who leave campus without a permit are subject to disciplinary action. All students will remain on campus during their lunch period. If you have a scheduled appointment and must leave school early, obtain a Permit to Leave Campus from the attendance office BEFORE SCHOOL. Checking out early requires a call from a parent or a note stating the time and reason for early checkout. Parents and guardians will be asked to show ID for student checkout. VISITORS’ PASSES Visitors’ passes will not be issued during the school day unless the reason for being on campus is directly related to an educational program. All visitors must check in through the front office and all visitors must be approved by administration. DRESS CODE All students are to wear acceptable clothing (within the dress code) while on campus, whether or not school is in session, and at all school-sponsored events. Failure to change into acceptable clothing as provided by the attendance office may result in disciplinary action up to and including an off-campus suspension. GOOD NEIGHBOR POLICY & OFF CAMPUS CONDUCT Students may not stand or loiter at any time on either side of the streets adjacent to school property. Students loitering, littering or engaging in other negative behaviors on the way to or from school may result in disciplinary action. All disciplinary action in regard to student conduct (for violation of school rules or other clear misconduct) on campus shall also apply to any activity off campus, (whether or not school is in session when such activity occurs) if such off campus activity may be reasonably interpreted to threaten the ability of the district to maintain a safe, orderly and disciplined educational atmosphere. This procedure is not limited to school sponsored and school related events.

Page 14: GLENDALE HIGH SCHOOL

STUDENT CONFLICT Students are expected to take all necessary measures to avoid fighting with another student. If a student has a conflict with another student, they are to report it to a teacher, counselor, or administrator immediately. The consequence for fighting is a 9 day off-campus suspension for all students involved. GRAFFITI PREVENTION Students may not possess permanent (Sharpie) markers, paint pens, mean streak markers, grease pens, or any similar items, with the only exception being Highlighters. Any drawings, stylized writing inscription, figure or mark on school property, backpacks, notebooks, papers, clothing or body, which may be associated with illegal or gang activity is prohibited. DETENTIONS Detentions include lunch detentions (35 minutes during lunch), 45 minute (after school) detentions, and 90 minute (after school) detentions. Failure to show to detentions may result in In-School Suspension or Off-Campus Suspension. SUSPENSIONS Suspensions include both In-School Suspensions (ISS) and Off-Campus Suspensions. Students who demonstrate a lack of control or the ability to follow instructions while serving an In-School Suspension may be sent home for the remainder of the day. STUDENT PARKING Student parking on campus is a privilege, NOT A RIGHT. Students driving to school must obtain a parking permit from the attendance office. A $25.00 fee will be charged for campus parking. The parking permit must be displayed in the front window of the vehicle. Any car not properly displaying this sticker will be subject to being towed at the owner’s expense. In addition, parking on campus without a permit may result in disciplinary action. Parking privileges may be revoked at any time by the school administration. WARNING: VEHICLES SUBJECT TO SEARCH Any vehicle entering school property is subject to search by school authorities. Such searches may be conducted without a warrant or permission from the owner of the vehicle. Search of the vehicle includes all compartments and components. Once a search begins, the person in control of the vehicle will not be permitted to remove it from the premises during the reasonable duration of the search. SCHOOL BUS TRANSPORTATION The school district provides bus transportation for students who live more than a mile and a half from the school. Students must show their I.D. card to the driver to board the bus. Students need to be at their assigned pick-up point ten (10) minutes before their scheduled bus arrival. Bus drivers are not expected to wait for students at the bus stop either in the morning or afternoon. Missing the bus is not an excuse for being tardy to school. The bus driver has complete charge of the bus, and his/her instructions must be followed. Rules for passengers are posted in the front of each bus. Students whose behavior threatens the safety of others will be denied transportation. Misuse of ID cards or Late Bus Passes may result in loss of bus privileges and/or disciplinary action. REMEMBER IT IS A PRIVILEGE TO RIDE THE BUS, NOT A RIGHT. Skateboards, roller skates, or similar modes of transportation are not permitted to be used on campus at any time. All bikes must be locked in the bike rack and not ridden on campus at any time. ELECTRONIC INFORMATION RESOURCES The goal of the Glendale Union High School District in providing electronic information services is to promote educational excellence by facilitating resource sharing, innovation and communication. The GUHSD will make every effort to protect students and teachers from any misuse or abuses as a result of experiences with an information service. The use of the information system is a privilege, not a right, and inappropriate use will result in a cancellation of those privileges and may result in disciplinary action. ACTIVITIES An Interscholastic athletic program and a wide range of clubs are available to Glendale High School students. Participation in one or more of these activities offers a student an opportunity to develop physical skills, proper attitudes and lasting friendships. All students are encouraged to get involved. ATHLETIC ELIGIBILTY In order to participate in inter-school activities, students of Glendale High School must meet the rules and regulations set up by the Arizona Interscholastic Association. These rules determine the eligibility in all A.I.A schools in Arizona. SCHOLASTIC ELIGIBILITY

1. Underclassmen must be currently enrolled in a minimum of 5 credit classes. 2. Senior on track to graduate must be enrolled in a minimum of 4 credit classes. 3. Students will be monitored on a two week cumulative basis. 4. Students who fail to earn a passing grade in any credit earning class for a two week period

will be eligible for the following two week period (Monday through Saturday), or until student is passing all classes

In addition to being scholastically eligible, athletic participants must have the following on file in the front office. 1. Athletic Physical Card (yellow) which includes Consent for Emergency Care and Record of Insurance/Parent Permission

Sections 2. Athlete’s Sports Risk Video Card completed with your coach. 3. Birth Certificate 4. MTBI (Mild Traumatic Brain Injury) consent form 5. A.I.A. Brain Book Concussion Course certificate

No equipment will be issued until these conditions are met. Students who miss the major portion of a school day may be ineligible to participate in athletic events for that day or evening. Anyone who becomes ineligible should immediately notify the coach to keep our games from being forfeited. ATHLETIC EQUIPMENT A record of all athletic equipment issued to students is kept by the Varsity head coach. It is the responsibility of each student issued equipment to check the equipment in at the end of the sports season, or, if dropping out of the sport activity. Students will be charged for all athletic equipment assigned to them but not checked in. Be responsible – be sure the equipment you are using is the equipment checked out for your use. Any equipment not returned by student may result in a fine. Remember – you cannot participate in another sport until you have turned in all equipment from the previous sport. ATHLETIC EXPECTATIONS Participation in athletics is not a right, but a privilege. Students involved in competitive activities are expected to:

1. Maintain academic eligibility 2. Maintain good citizenship on campus, in the competitive arena and in the community. 3. Maintain a positive attitude, support teammates and other school athletic programs, clubs and organization. 4. Build and maintained good personal health.
