House Names
It is with great excitement that we announce the new names for our
House Groups at Gladesville Primary School. After much discussion
this year between students and staff, the final category from which to
choose house names from was Australian children’s authors. This
category reflects the emphasis that the school places on the importance
of reading in the development of each student at Gladesville. Last
week, the Student Lighthouse Group discussed the shortlisted authors
and came to their final decision. Thank you to Aimee, Ebony, Koda,
Cameron, Miss A and Kathy Sutton for working through the final part of
this decision making process. More information is on the following
pages but here are the names of our new houses!
Base House: Named after Graeme Base
Rodda House: Named after Emily Rodda
Fox House: Named after Mem Fox
Lester House: Named after Allison Lester

Parent Opinion Survey The Parent Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is conducted with a sample of randomly selected parents at each school. It is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of parents’ perception of school climate, student engagement and relationships with parent communities. Our school will be using the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies. I would like to thank the parents who took the time to complete the 2017 survey. Our focus areas for 2017 were to improve the percentile rankings of the following:
School pride and confidence to 25% We achieved 74%
student motivation and support to 25%. We achieved 72% positive response.
school connectedness to 25%. We achieved 80%positive response.
As you can see, the overall results indicate high growth and improvement in all areas of the parent opinions which aligns with the high growth and improvement in this year’s student attitudes to school
survey results. School council will further discuss these results and areas of focus for the 2018 Annual
Implementation Plan at this week’s meeting.
Trivia Night What a successful night it was! Who would have guessed that our community
would love making and flying paper airplanes so much! We have had fantastic
feedback so far and would love to hear any of your thoughts about future Trivia
Nights too. Please email Hollie in the office with any suggestions –
The night raised a total profit of $2,255.00!!! This profit will go towards iPads for each class.
A special THANK YOU to everyone involved and who attended this wonderful night!!
Indonesian Language Students in grade F-3 have been learning about word order in Indonesian and listened to
a Balinese story called ‘Three Little Fishes’. There was much discussion about the fish
needing to synergise and work together to solve a problem.
Students in grade 4-6 have also been learning about word order and sentence structure including writing
their own information about an animal and making an animal mask to go with it.
In all Indonesian lessons students are encouraged to make proactive choices and be in charge of their
own learning. A weekly certificate is handed out to a student exhibiting these behaviours. Over the last
two weeks the following students have received an award during Indonesian lessons for making proactive
choices:
5/6: Sarah & Charlotte C 4/5: Skye & Kynan
2/3: Zoren & Mia 1/2: Hyacinth & Felix
F: Byllie & Maddison S
Selamat liburan.

OSHC VAC – Term 3 Holidays
Visual Arts JUNIOR SCHOOL
Over the last few weeks, we have been focussing on the final habit, Habit 7; Sharpen the
Saw. This habit is one of continuous improvement in both the personal and interpersonal
spheres of influence and focuses on fine tuning skills learnt. In the junior school we have been sharpening
our fine motor skills, working with watercolours students have been intricately painting a small piece of
art.
SENIOR SCHOOL
Students in the senior school have also had the opportunity to exercise Habit 7; Sharpen the Saw. We
have been using watercolour, textas and fine liners to hone our fine motor skills working to understand
that often less is more and practice makes perfect. Our fine motor skills have also been utilised to produce
the materials we will need to create our term 4 collaborative piece where you will see Habit 6 (Synergise)
really shine…stay tuned.
Science Since the last newsletter, germination of seeds is going strong at Gladesville! In each
of the classrooms there has been the beginnings of vegetable seedlings sprouting.
Mr. Gurr’s challenge is to keep them watered and look after over the coming end of term holidays. The
vegetable garden began some rejuvenation work with the Foundation students in the lead up to planting
next term.
The grass heads have strands of “hair” up to 14 centimetres long. Students are excited to take them
home for the holidays and some are so proactive that they are keen to give them haircuts and even style
their grass head with gel and bands. Students are encouraged not to plant the grass in the garden but
if allowed somewhere in the home lawn when they are ready to.
Using their grass heads students have recorded their observations of grass growth using cross section
diagrams following set out procedures. Beginning with the end in mind students had to consider use
of space on a page to best present their cross section diagrams to include the drawing, a key and a
border. It was pleasing to see so many students drawing with the grass heads in front of them, some with
rulers taking measurements.
Our computer microscope was brought to life in preparation for next term’s science. Cells will be
investigated and some students had the opportunity to look at onion cells, the head of ant and the feather
of a peacock under 200x magnification on the classroom electronic white board.
Congratulations to all students on a great effort in Science this term and I look forward to the harvest of
vegetables next term and exploring the hidden world of cells in term 4.
Mr Gurr
Term 4 Yoga Yoga will be held each Wednesday commencing 18th October. The enrichment program
will run for 6 weeks and provides fun, ‘bite-sized’ exercises that they can try at home to
help each family member unwind and connect with each other. The program focusses on mindfulness,
positive psychology and FUN! Please remember to return your forms and that payment is due back
before the end of Term 3.
Athletics
On Tuesday evening 3 of our students attended an exciting event at the Yarra ranges Athletics club.
The afternoon was for the foundation -Yr 2 students to trial Athletics.
Physical Education
Term 4 will bring lots of exciting new activities for the students. We will focus on striking and fielding
games, net games and invasion games. Our Jump Off will be held the first Thursday back and the Year
5/6 will have a Community Sports Day, where they will play various activities against the other 6 schools
in the district.
Over the holidays, encourage your child to keep active. A bike ride, play in the park or a visit to the
swimming pool to polish off the skills that are being taught this week are just a few ideas.
Jump Rope for Heart – CHANGE OF DATE
Due to inclement weather last week, we have decided to postpone the Jump Rope for Heart Jump Off. The date has new been changed to week 1, Term 4 Thursday 12th October.
As we postponed the Jump Off for Heart today, the Y1,2 and 3 students have been working on their communication and listening skills in PE. These activities involved clear verbal communication, listening ears on and trust. They did a great job and all worked well together. Well done
