OGF IPR Policies Apply

subject to all provisions of Appendix B of GFD-C.1, which grants to the OGF and its participants certain licenses and rights insuch statements. What is GIR-WG / GIR-RG?

GIR-WG was chartered by GGF to develop standardsand reference implementations for informationretrieval (IR) on computational grids. GIR-WG has published a Requirements document under

GGF (GFD-I.027) An Experimental document describing an implementation

(GFD-E.082) Progress on the Architecture document has been slow

Based on suggestions from the OGF StandardsCouncil, we’ve examined changing from a WorkingGroup to a Research Group

Why recharter as an RG?

Status as a Research Group would allow more focuson basic research and analysis, which has beenwhere much GIR-WG effort has been directed

Research groups do not have the imperative todevelop standards It has been the experience of the WG that standards for GIR

are difficult. It seems that it is not yet time for GIRstandards, but likely will be within a few years

OGF Research Groups perform basic and applied research,and can form a basis for later standards formation

Standards & the nature of Search

• GIR means search on computational grids• This is a difficult, data-intensive, high-level

application driven by user needs• Per our GFD-I.027, it relies on a stack of

middleware, APIs, security and otherelements• GIR standards will be layered over many other

standards, some of which do not yet exist• Implementation experience will help to shape

those standards

• Brief group summary: The GIR RG isfocused on search functionality basedon computational grids. Search, alsoknown as information retrieval, is adata-intensive activity intended to matchdocuments (of all types) to humaninformation needs.

Potential GIR-RG Charter

• Group focus & scope:• The GIR RG is focused on search functionality based on computational

grids. The ability to distribute search functions across computational gridsis commonly used to handle very large datasets, intensive searchcapabilities, or large quantities of concurrent data operations (queries,indexing, or data movement).

• Search, also known as information retrieval, is a data-intensive activityintended to match documents (of all types) to human information needs.While search functionality is a critical aspect of many datasets for manyorganizations and individuals, standardization has been elusive.

• The RG will perform research and develop interoperable applications forsearch on grid-enabled and grid-like systems. This work is soundly basedin current and near-future state of the art information retrieval systems, butwith more emphasis on the relations among different systems andtechniques than is typical for mainstream systems.

• Drawing on GFD-I.027, GIR RG looks at grid-based search as having threemain elements: collection management, indexing/searching, and queryprocessing services to grid users and applications.
