The Importance of the AKC Delegate

Recently, Christine Lietzau resigned from her newly elected position as AKC Delegate from the Giant Schnauzer Club of America to the American Kennel Club. While I understand her decision and wish her well, it is with careful consideration that we proceed with the next step in the replacement of this very important position in the GSCA. Christine felt that because she trained and showed dogs professionally (for compensation) she was ineligible to be a Delegate under AKC Bylaws, which allow a delegate to charge for their expenses, but not for their services. the AKC Bylaws. They nominate and elect Delegates to serve on the AKC Board of Directors & Delegate Standing Committees. They approve new member clubs, votes to uphold or overrule an AKC Board decision to disapprove a Delegate candidate or to remove a seated Delegate. Only a Delegate may serve on the AKC Board. Delegates vote to discipline and even to expel, a Member Club. The responsibilities of the Delegate are immense. Delegates are expected to: attend and vote at quarterly Delegate Meetings, attend and/or participate with Delegate Standing Committees, bring Member Club's proposals to the Delegates and/or Delegate Standing Committees. A Member Club, through its Delegate, may propose amendments to the AKC Bylaws or AKC Rules directly to the AKC Board. The Giant Schnauzer Club of America has been fortunate to have had delegates willing to invest time, effort and personal expenses, as well as, to speak up and become involved and to engage others in crucial conversations. This has been done mostly at the personal expense of the delegate with only a small reimbursement offered. During this brief time of transition, Robin Greenslade will act as the interim Delegate. Prior to the appointment of the new delegate, I will work with the GSCA Board of Directors to craft a plan, which will be a more realistic and equitable reimbursement of a portion of the GSCA Delegates expenses. I believe this is critical if we have intentions of opening this position up to the right person, without regard to their net worth. Because of the importance of this decision it will not be made lightly, but it will be made over a very short time line. Any member interested in being considered for this position should send a brief letter of intent with current contact information to me at [email protected]

Name & Location Michelle Kiernan & Steve Winterbottom, California

Your Giants’ Name Ike (6 years old, MACH Classic Ike V. Easentaigh SchH3, VCD1, RAE2, MXF, SPD) and Duesy (2 years old, Ain't She A Duesy Von Furstenhaus)

Occupation Both of us are Mechanics.

How long have you been a GSCA member? I think its been 4 years or so??

How did you get into Giants? I had a field breed, English Pointer (Indy); she was my first Agility partner. She got me hooked on the sport. I was looking for another Agility partner, (with the same drive she had) but a different breed, a breed you don't see everyday. She was the only pointer I ever saw doing Agility at that time. I was looking for a smart, athletic, in need of a job, kind of dog. I found the Riesenschnauzer.

Do you have other pets in addition to Giants? We call them Furkids. We have two Persian cats (Domino and Bella) and a Chinese Crested (Crystal, 3 years old, China Road Itsacrystal CD, RE, MX, MXJ, XF)

What do you do with your Giants? What don't we do, should be the question. My goal when bringing Ike home at 8 weeks old, was to have another Agility partner and furkid to take with us on camping and river trips. I waited until he was 2 years old to train for Agility, so to pass the time we did Rally, Obedience, and he earned his BH. I had him instinct tested for Herding; he loved it and they loved him. But, I figured we could do that sport when he is older. He has done Dock diving and loves it. We go whenever it comes to our town. Ike enjoys everything about Schutzhund: the Obedience, the bite work and he just loves the Tracking.

Duesy is in training for Agility and Schutzhund and anything else she wants to do. I will let her decide when she is ready to compete. I am not looking forward to paying for 3 dogs to compete in Agility. We are so glad we brought this little cannon ball home. I was afraid I wouldn't have enough time for her, like I did when Ike was a puppy. I was right, but I swear she is my pointer (Indy) reincarnated, I show her a piece of agility equipment and she knows what to do. She is so easy to train and so much fun. She is always happy and loves life.

Do you have other hobbies besides dogs? That's a funny question,.......NO! Wait, I do have a ‘69 Camaro in the garage, and that's were it has been for the last 6 years. That's funny… Ike's 6 years old.

What is your dog(s) favorite treat and/or toy? Ike - small .50 cent rubber ball or a cuz ball. Crystal – small, floppy Frisbee. Duesy - Jolly Ball/Tuffy's or Ike's head. My dogs love to play with anything I have but I would have to say those are the favorites.

What was the last dog-related thing you read? An Agility course map.

Anything else you'd like to add. If I may brag a little more about my boy. Ike is my first RS and second Agility partner. We started competing in Agility on Jan 1, 2008. That’s 3 years and he has been the GSCA #1 Agility dog for all three years, 2008, 2009 and 2010. Also, #1 AKC Agility dog 2009-2010. We were lucky enough to earn Ike's and Indy's CD’s on the same day, Aug 12, 2006. Ike is my first Schutzhund dog. He earned his Schutzhund 3 on Feb. 5th 2011, then he went and earned his TD on Feb. 20th. The amazing things this boy can do. I am so proud of him.

MACH Classic Ike V. Easentaigh SchH3, VCD1, RAE2, MXF, SPD (Still going strong) GSCA #1 Rally Dog 2006 GSCA Top Ten Obed Dog 2006 GSCA #1 Agility Dog 2008 & 2009 & 2010 AKC #1 Agility Dog 2009 & 2010 Best Working Dog @ Schnauzerfest 2010 (Conf. show) 1st Giant to earn an RAE & RAE2 & MXF I do believe he is the only Giant to have earned both and SchH3 and a MACH China Road Itsacrystal CD,RE,MX,MXJ,OF (Wants to be like Ike :) Ain't She A Duesy Von Furstenhaus (Big plans, still training)

The California Western Regional Specialty

The Golden State Giant Schnauzer Club sure does know how to put on a Specialty. The show committee, consisting of Daryl Anderson, Valla Bridges, Doug Conover, Starr Henderson, Terry Parker, Melinda Eaton, Sandi Yanoff, and Rebecca Czarniak, made us all feel welcome from the time we arrived. They fed us like royalty, they showered us with goodies, and they cheered us on in the ring. This show was dedicated in loving memory of Kathie Anderson. Having known Kathie, and the quality of shows she used to organize, I know she would have been proud of her GSGSC family.

The theme was May Day, with a beautiful wood carved May pole, adorned with Giant Schnauzers, flowers and ribbons, created by Doug Conover. Barbara Bender designed and illustrated four lovely prints, which were auctioned off later that evening in the silent auction. Her same design was used for the t-shirts that were sold at the show. The weather followed suit with the theme as well – sunny skies and 80 degrees.

Ginny Maese and Kim Demchak drove up from Arizona, Nola and Jim Keay drove down from Canada, Liz Lagmanson came in from Texas, and The Captain came over from Utah, all to join the California residents in some friendly competition and camaraderie. There were 18 entries in Conformation, four entries in Puppy Sweeps, three entries in Veteran Sweeps, and four entries in Obedience/Rally.

When I first got into Giant Schnauzers many, many years ago, the Western Regional Specialty was my first experience at a dog show. The one thing that has stuck with me all these years is how welcoming the California GS folks were to me. They took me under their wings, answered my million questions, and invited me to future events. I witnessed this same mentoring all these years later, with the three new GS owners that were there showing. Everyone went out of their way to help make these Rookies’ first show experience a memorable one. It reminded me of why I became a member of this club.

It was only fitting that the weekend be capped off by Daryl Anderson’s CH. Galilee Ingebar Catherine taking a Group 4 and I believe finishing her Grand Champion title. Maybe Kathie had a little something to do with that.

Thank you all for a wonderful weekend! Lori Clark

The Arizona Western Regional Specialty

Valla and I loaded Kate and headed for Arizona hoping to have a lot of fun. What we got was more than we expected. Ginny and Kim had everything laid out so well. The trophies were the best I have ever seen at any specialty. They were done to a local theme and the theme of the Kachina Kennel Club. The trophies were beautiful paintings on sandstone, depicting the local scenery with beautiful pictures of our wonderful breed. We all groomed in the same area and so we were able to get to know each other better.

It was not a large entry, but the quality was as good as I have ever seen. The judge would say WOW as she looked at each line up. After the judging, it was agreed that everyone got something out of the experience. After the show, Ginny held a handling class that everyone who attended enjoyed and learned something. The next day, Chris Lietzau held a Grooming Seminar that was well attended. Valla said that everyone learned something and had a good time.

The banquet was very cozy and everybody got to know each other better. Karen Child thanked the club for having her judge the show and said that she was very impressed with the quality of the dogs. She said it was difficult to pick the winners.

The venue was the Arizona Football Stadium, which would have 4 days of shows after the regional. The Kachina Kennel Club was just super in the way they made you feel welcome. You never had to walk to the show grounds; they were there with golf carts, as soon as you got out of your car, to take you to the show rings.

Valla and I stayed the next two days and every night a group of us would go to dinner.

All in all it was one of my more memorable experiences at a dog show. When we loaded up to go home we just couldn’t get over how enjoyable it was.

Ginny and Kim need a big hand for putting on such a wonderful show.

Thank you, Daryl Anderson
