We will be holding elections for new board members for the May 2012-April 2012 year, and we’d love to welcome new people to the group! The meeting to elect the new Board members is being held on Tuesday May 1st, 7 p.m. at Unity Church on Greenville Avenue. If you are interested in serving on the GHNA Board, please send an email to [email protected]. The Board meets once a month and helps organize neighborhood activities and discuss any issues that impact our neighborhood. With so many new folks joining our Greenland Hills area, we’d love to include you! As a reminder, we have a wonderful Extended Neighborhood Patrol program (Crime Watch), and our own Michael Malouf continues to do a great job communicating any recent incidents via email to all who are members of the Neighborhood Association and Crime Watch. You can pay your dues ($220 for the year) online at our website at www.mstreets.org. or, you can fill out the attached form and mail it in to the address on the document. This goes directly towards hiring off duty police officers to share in shifts throughout each week. The more funds we raise by new members, the more hours they can include on the schedule. With the Summer months fast approaching, many will be traveling for vacation. A benefit to being a Crime Watch member is that you will have direct access to call the CW hotline and let them know your address and the dates you will be gone. They will specifically stop by your house during their patrol hours and check inside the windows, near gates, etc. for any suspicious activity. There is definitely peace of mind knowing that this wonderful police officers are helping keep our neighborhood safe. All the best! Ted Thompson, President

Updated Glencoe Park Construction Schedule

2012 will bring an improved Glencoe Park to our neighborhood! It has been a long process, and wait, but construction is slated to begin in April. According to the City of Dallas, the tasks and schedule for Glencoe Park are as follows:

• Advertise Project: 2nd week of December 2011

• Open Bids: 2nd week of January 2012

• Park Board Contract Award: mid-February 2012

• City Council Contract Award: early to mid-March 2012

• Begin Construction: early to mid-April 2012

The improvements include a new pavilion, replacement of the entire playground, and two portable toilet enclosures – one close to the new playground and pavilion, and the other near the football/rugby field.

NEW LANDSCAPING COMING TO CENTRAL EXPRESSWAY OVER-

PASSES!

An eyesore no more! City crews recently removed dead plants and

trees from the Monticello and McCommas overpasses. The City of Dallas is taking over the landscaping maintenance from TxDOT. New

plants will most likely be heat and drought-tolerant grasses.

GHNA neighbors, homeowners are responsible for the upkeep of

alleyways. We have had an urgent request from our Extended

Neighborhood Patrol officers to get the alleys cleaned and pass-

able. The officers are unable to drive patrol cars through many of

our alleys due to overgrown trees and bushes, excess trash, and

items like this sofa in the alley of 5200 block of Ridgedale (South)

and Vanderbilt (North). E.N.P. plans to turn in violating addresses to City of Dallas

“A” IS FOR “ALLEY” AND “ATROCIOUS!”

G.H.N.A. STREET CONSTRUCTION

Though streets with no curbs or sidewalks are quaint, and commonplace in other areas of Dal-

las, it is unusual to see them in long-established areas like Greenland Hills. Until recently,

however, there were three blocks of Laneri without these amenities. This just-completed sec-tion, between Mercedes and Merrimac, was rebuilt through the City of Dallas Public Works

“Property Owner Petition Program”. Thanks to those homeowners for spiffing up that block!

BEAUTIFICATION UPDATE

By Katy Richardson

5450 Morningside: After the extreme heat of July and August, simply keeping flowers, shrubs and trees alive is an accomplishment. The September Yard of the Month winners, Matthew and Fabiana March, did much more than that, with a yard awash in annual and peren-nial color. "I feel like our house looks like a little cot-tage from the outside, so I decided to go that way in design," Fabiana explains. "We planted boxwoods, hy-drangeas, sweet potato vines, and lilacs." As Septem-ber's Yard of the Month winners, the Marches received a $25 Gift Certificate to Calloway's Nursery.

5546 Merrimac: Corner lots are always a challenge when it comes to landscaping, but October's yard of the month win-ner Scott Barnes has turned that challenge into a blossoming opportunity. "The large wraparound porch really invites the ability to landscape the front yard in a unique way," he notes. And unique it is -- the focal point of a trio of arches on the porch is a display of hay bales, pumpkins, ears of corn and scarecrows.

"I got the idea for the display 12 years ago at the Farmer’s Market," Scott explains. "With pumpkins, hay bales and scarecrows in abundance, I just thought it would add some-thing special to the front porch and the house. I have gotten so many compliments from fellow neighbors out on their daily walks and runs that I have made it an annual tradition."

In addition to the eye-catching porch display, the home also features a bounty of annual and perennial color. "Landscaping has been a joy and the only thing I personally do around the house," says Scott. "Fall is by far my favorite time of year and I really like cyclamen, which are planted in the window boxes and large pots mixed with white elysium and English ivy." The con-tainers on the side porch feature kalanchoe, and the beds are filled with petunias and Mexican sage. "The landscaping design is really about color and longevity," Scott adds. "I change the landscaping three times a year so I try to pick plants with color that can take the Texas weather." As October's Yard of the Month winner, Scott will receive a $25 Gift Certificate to Calloway's Nursery.

DOG-WALKING ETIQUETTE

I absolutely love that we have so many wonderful neighbors that love spend-

ing time with their pets and taking their dogs for a nice walk around the

neighborhood. It’s a great way to meet your neighbors as well as give your dog a little exercise. As the Spring and Summer months approach, we will

see lots of ‘traffic’ on the sidewalks as people and their pets enjoy the nice

weather. I do want to remind everyone though of two key rules:

1) Dogs MUST be on a leash at all times. Even if your dog is properly

trained and will obey your every command, you have no idea what MY

dog may do to incite unwanted behavior. Please be courteous and keep all dogs on leashes while walking around the neighborhood. NOTE: It is also the law.

2) When picking up after you dog, please discard the bags in your own

trash, not in the lawn where it was originally collected nor in someone’s

trash bin or bulk trash pile. It doesn’t matter how pretty the colored bags

are—please be a good neighbor and place it within your own trash bags at your home.

Thank you for being considerate neighbors and pet owners!
