The Dean’s Editorial
Dear Graduates
Before we all take a well-deserved rest and enjoy the summer sunshine
I’d like to give you an update on the latest GGSB news.
We’ve enjoyed a few successes over the past few months. One is the
fact that we, finally, obtained state recognition for our BIB program as we
have been awarded the “Visa d’état” by the French Ministry of Higher
Education and Research. This is the result of more than two years of
French bureaucracy and thanks to the hard work of the BIB program
team and our quality and accreditations department, QUID, headed up by
Julie Perrin-Halot who I am sure most of you do not know but she is the
person behind the scenes who makes sure that your programs respect
the quality criteria of the various international accrediting bodies.
Our second success this year and another one we are very proud of, is the ranking of our MSc Finance
program in the top ten world’s best Finance programs by the Financial Times for the second consecutive
year. Alongside with the ranking of the MIB by the Financial Times and the MBA by the Economist this
really puts GGSB on the world map of the best business schools and I am sure that you are also proud of
these achievements.
In March this year we enjoyed another very successful Graduation Ceremony and Gala. More than 50% of
the graduating students came back to Grenoble to receive their degree certificates, celebrate their award
and reunite with their classmates. Many graduates travelled from afar and brought their families too which
is surely the proof of the attachment to the GGSB family.
We are now in the process of finalizing student admissions for September for another academic year and
you will all be pleased to know that we are continuing to attract excellent students and that GGSB is
competing with the world’s top business schools to attract the best talent. The current economic climate is
certainly challenging for many countries and sectors of industry and it is vital that we select the right profiles
for our programs to ensure maximum employability. We hope that if necessary you will be able to take
advantage of the network of graduates for employment opportunities and business contacts.
The objective of this newsletter is to enable us to keep in touch with our alumni and to share with you the
success stories not only of GGSB as an institution but also the progress and news of our graduates. We
are also aiming to organize more GGSB reunion events around the world, the last event being in Tbilisi
Georgia where we run our MBA program and the next one in Singapore in October where we will be
launching our MSc Finance program which will run alongside the MIB program. Alumni reunions are a great
way to network and to get to know other alumni from other intakes and programs and we hope that you will
be able to join us at an event in your country.
Meanwhile enjoy the summer (or the winter for those in the Southern hemisphere!) and watch this space for
more exciting news from GGSB.
Warm wishes to you all.

From Monique Garnier Cormons, GGSB International Student Services Manager
Busy summer here at GGSB, Grenoble and other good news to be shared! In addition to obtaining the Visa d’état for the BIB, MIB, MBA, MSc
Business Development and MSc in Finance programs have been
recognized by the RCNP awarding them the title of “Manager
International” and Manager Financier” for the MSc in Finance programs.
These titles, recognized by the “Commission Nationale de la Certification
Professionnelle” – an agency belonging to the Ministry of the Economy,
attest to the successful acquisition of core international or financial
management skills and knowledge necessary for future roles as
managers in an international or financial context. The labels, Manager
International and Manager Financier, are registered on the “Répertoire
National des Certifications Professionnelles” at level 1, the highest level
for such certification.
As for networking events, I am implementing these with a special focus
on our off-site campuses. I have just come back from ancestral Tbilisi,
Georgia. Unforgettable!
On an intercultural point of view, there is not only one definition of networking. With more than 110 different nationalities, diversity at GGSB is one of our assets. Consequently there are so many ways to define networking... I’d like to share that Georgians are very similar to French people in that respect. We like to share ideas and make connections enjoying a dinner tasting good food and wine. It is a work of art celebrating with joy, music and dance. In Georgia, they give cheerful toasts. TAMADA is the toast master. It is one of the most respected vocations. One of the nicest definitions of networking was from one of our Georgian Alumni: Alavi Hamed: Networking should be done with beauty, grace and Elegance. Food for thought and inspiration to carry on this mission… In the same vein, we are constantly working on improvements, and as Judith mentioned, we are aiming to
organize more GGSB reunion events: future ones to take place in London and Singapore in October. We
won’t neglect Grenoble either. Within the frame of our exciting MSc in Fashion and Design and Luxury
management, we will organize workshops with our Alumni working in this prestigious industry sector!
Specific information will follow!
To maintain better contact with our graduates each Program Director will be sending you news email on a
regular basis giving you specific Program updates. Please make sure you let us know of any changes in
your contact details so that you don’t miss out the latest news form the ranch!
Looking forward to hearing from you and meeting you somewhere in the world!
Warm wishes to you all from sunny Grenoble.

From Igor Chigrin, MIB 21…Think Global! Go Global! Win Global!
“Think Global! Go Global! Win Global!” is a slogan of a Toronto-based export-import
consulting and logistics firm Win Global Partners. Its founder Igor Chigrin graduated from
GGSB/Grenoble Ecole de Management in 2008. Two years later he immigrated to Canada
with his family where the success story of his entrepreneurship began.
Having a Bachelor Degree in Management and working for an IT company in a small city of
Yaroslavl, Russia, Igor always dreamt of working in the field of international business.
He enrolled into the Master of International Business program of Grenoble Graduate
School of Business and his wish started coming true. The knowledge and connections he
obtained there helped him start his own business within 2 years from his graduation.
At first it was difficult: a new country, a new field, a new role... Igor and his partners could accept challenges and
succeeded. Now Win Global Partners is a growing firm whose number of clients continues to grow from month to
month. More and more companies of different sizes and from different fields address their unique global expansion
needs, including breaking into new foreign markets, to Win Global Partners. Among its projects there were ones with
Canada, the USA, Italy, France, Russia, China, Middle East and many other areas. Win Global Partners offer
solutions at all steps of clients’ international business development from non-exporters/importers to regular
exporters/importers, such as: product adaptation, compliance management, export-import outsourcing and freight
forwarding.
“Thanks to all of our professors my classmates and I obtained valuable knowledge and developed necessary
skills to successfully operate in the area of export-import consulting and logistics”, - says Igor Chigrin and
highly recommends MIB Program to those who wish working in the field of international business.
Win Global Partners gradually becomes a leader in its area. In November 2011 Igor gave an interview to one of
Canadian radio stations. In January 2012 those who are interested in export-import were be able to see him on TV.
Dear all! Think Global! To see new horizons of your business. Go Global! To enrich your business and your
personal life. Win Global! To live as a WINNER.

MIB gives you what you need to fly on your own!
From Sofiène Bouzid, MIB London 2007
As an accounting & Finance graduate pursuing chartered accountancy qualification, I felt that I was increasingly losing my creativity and dynamism in figures. So I felt the need to have a break by studying something else and this break was even more constructive, important and especially enjoyable with MIB. I can’t forget this experience, studying in a classroom of 12, interacting with students and highly qualified lecturers from all-over the world, spending night with classmates preparing short-notice work and PowerPoint presentations, being stuck at home writing my dissertation while my friends are gone swimming, gave me what I was looking for.
I found a position with MAZARS Tunisia, a French multinational accounting practice, 3 months after graduation and I’m still there since 3 years now. I audit financial institutions and I still believe this is the best entry job for anyone wishing to follow a career in Accounting / Finance. The difference between my colleagues and me is not about accounting but general knowledge, open mind, soft skills, capabilities enhanced through MIB, the interaction with people all over the world and above all ambition. Moreover, I am part of 2 societies and I advise anyone to integrate a society because it
does not only change you from your work but you continue to learn and continuous development is your competitive advantage in the business world even when it comes to Volunteering work.
With MIB, the time constraint, presentations, interaction with students, lecturers and experience sharing teach you how to behave professionally, enhance your interpersonal skills and prepare you for the professional world. MIB gives you what you need to fly on your own. Above all, it’s not just a program, it’s an experience and this experience is based on a structure composed on peop le striving for the best and working hard to improve the image of their business school. My advice for future students: Get the most of this experience, build your own network, fill in your wallet with business cards and mobile numbers, keep in touch with your classmates and behave as your business school wants you to. Do not forget that you will be an ambassador of the GGSB family in your own country.

FROM AUSTRIA
From Hermann Riess, MIB 23 Management Consultant – Customer Relationship Management at Accenture Austria
I am currently working for Accenture Austria as a management consultant specialized in customer relationship management. Accenture is a global management consulting, technology services and outsourcing company. As of 2012, the company had more than 244,000 employees across 120 countries. As part our daily business we support our clients on focusing on their customers by providing innovative and effective approaches to marketing, sales and customer service.
The Master’s in International Business degree provided me with a strong set of tools required in today’s consulting world. In addition to a strong academic background professors at GGSB always provided real life applications of the concepts and frameworks taught. To me this approach was always more effective since I rather remember the successful application of a concept rather than all structural steps involved.
The strong focus on case studies was probably one of the most valuable learning experiences while studying the MIB. Every client has its own background, vision and objectives – the experience gained from solving case studies in different business areas such as strategic management, marketing or human resource management nowadays allows me to understand and eventually optimize our client’s requirements.
Since Accenture is a global company strong skills in intercultural communication as well as an appreciation of diversity are essential. The international orientation of the MIB program helped me in gaining a working knowledge about other cultures and habits. As a result I can more effectively deal with clients and colleagues from all over the world.

Intercultural Management – Technion Multi Cultural Team Project From Deepita Shah, MBA Fulltime Candidate
Multiculturism and heterogeneity are the hallmarks of international businesses today. As
business models evolve, we witness a gradual migration of a diverse workforce across
the globe that is being segregated by skills and not by ethnicity, skin color, or sex.
In our course on Cross Cultural Management with Professor Michelle Mielly, the needs
of modern managers in the global economy are emphasized—particularly the need to be
equipped to deal with this diversity and use it to their advantage. According to professor
Mielly, “… there is a real need for Master’s-level students to engage in a project-based
approach to working in remote multicultural teams, outside of the classroom setting.
Thanks to the intermediary of Professor Carolline Straub, who had worked on this project
when at ESADE, I became acquainted with a multi-team project enabling us to do this
with MBA-level students across multiple time zones. It responded clearly to the learning objectives I had been trying to
establish for better remote management practice and training at the MBA level.
”This sort of approach is representative of GGSB’s outside of the box’ thinking on how to give its students a
competitive edge in international teams. Projecting this kind of thought leadership that the school is known for, GGSB
along with several other elite business schools joined hands with the Technion Institute of Technology to take part in a
cross-border project, the TMCTP. The Goal of the Technion Multi Cultural Team Project (TMCTP) is to extend the
opportunity to experience working in multicultural teams on a joint project with graduate students across the globe.
The Project was originally designed by Professor Miriam Erez and her Doctoral student EfratShokef, The William
Davidson faculty of Industrial Engineering and Management, Technion – Israel Institute of Technology.
The aim of the project was to expose students to the intricacies of remote management in international business
teams, and therefore to ensure that a multicultural student audience gets a direct taste of the “boiler room” of multi-site
teamwork. The student body being truly global enhanced the vision and quality of the program with multi-cultural
participants from Israel, USA, France, Spain, Italy and Hong Kong. Each Grenoble MBA student was in a team of 4
with other MBA students from all over the world, with the majority studying at a country outside of their own.
The Project allowed the students to experience the flavor of a real life scenario on managing global virtual projects
and teams within the constrained environment of varied time zones, culture, values, working styles etc. .
The overall outcome of the project was extremely positive with all the participants giving huge thumbs up and wanting
the course to become a fixture at GGSB. It also ensured that GGSB students were one step closer to being the new
world leaders they set out to become.
Our objective was to develop next generation software for Wind Farm control systems and we based our study on research that served us with convincing factors to choose Finland as a suitable country for effective execution of our business plans. The project allowed us to understand business from a global perspective and helped us to build a strong network across countries.

MBA: THE INTERNATIONAL EXECUTIVE PROGRAM OPENS…
From Phil Eyre, MBA Program Director
In June 2012 the first student intake of the Executive MBA program came
to Grenoble and together we enjoyed a physical and mental challenge up
in the Chartreuse Forest during the teambuilding day. Eric MOREL, a
Grenoble-based leadership consultant, set up the orientation course
through the trees and gave us some short but striking insights into the
group dynamics that we experienced through the day. It gave a good
opportunity for both Program Director and Coordinator to get to know the
new group and to come into close contact with some muddy conditions on
the tracks (!)
The students who are locally based represent some major companies whose students we have regularly seen in our
MBA programs: here these include ST Microelectronics, HP and Schneider Electric. The group is mature with an
average of 9 years of professional experience, with age ranging from 26 to 46.
The program requires a minimum of 5 years of experience prior to enrolment and is designed to welcome older
managers aiming at senior responsibility. It is two years in duration, with a focus on Strategic and Leadership issues,
with a Leadership elective. The final projects are both group-based and individual, with the Microeconomics of
Competitiveness providing the basis for the group activity, while the individual assignment is focused on Career
Development.
In the coming year the MBA team and EXEC EDUCATION will be cooperating on giving companies and their
executives the message about this new program, with a view to the successful enrolment of second intake in 2013.
BUSINESS ETHICS
A new book on business ethics, edited by GGSB professors Patrick O'Sullivan, Mark Esposito and Mark Smith, has been published by Routledge
The book aims to integrate ethical issues across a full range of business
school disciplines including strategy, marketing, finance, human
resource management and organisational behaviour. Using four guiding
principles – a critical multi-level approach, a comparative and
international perspective, a global rather than just a European or
American stand point and engaging with subject-specific issues – this
book aims to 'mainstream' business ethics into the work of teachers and
students in business schools. This comprehensive volume brings
together contributions from a range of experts in different areas of
business studies thereby facilitating and encouraging a move away from
business ethics being a box to be ticked to being an integrated
consideration across the business disciplines.
A number of professors from GGSB have also contributed to the book
including Caroline Cuny, Josiena Gotzsch, Gazi Islam, Virginie
Monvoisin, Taran Patel, Loick Roche, Pierre-Yves Sanséau, Christelle
Tornikoski and Carolina Werle.
In addition Marko PItesa, one of our Alumni (MIB 25 and Grenoble
Ecole de Management PhD student) also wrote a chapter. GGSB
professors from further afield also made significant contributions
including David Bevan, Pauline Fatien Diochon, Carmelo Mazza, Alojzy Nowak, Terence Tse, Keith Whitfield and
Lloyd Williams.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT: KEEPING STAKEHOLDER IN THE LOOP
By Pat Brans in Enterprise Tech Journal
If you’re like me, you’ve seen more than a few undertakings fail because the right people weren’t on board. A misinformed stakeholder (or one whose needs aren’t taken into account) works against the project and causes delay, or even total failure. A sponsor who could make a difference at a crucial moment isn’t brought in by project management in time, so the project goes belly up. These are just two cases of problems that arise when stakeholders aren’t accounted for.
Different stakeholders have different kinds of influence. Some work for the project, and are said to be supporters; others work against the project, and are said to be resistors. Naturally, project managers gravitate toward supporters and tend to avoid the resistors. But all too often, the ones who work against the venture must be managed the most.
Managing stakeholders is an important aspect of project management, but what about schedule and cost?
What do veteran managers of large projects do to minimize the risk of delays?
They use metrics. The first thing they do is establish a baseline of project costs against which they measure variation.
These are just some of the ideas covered in Pat Brans' new column on Project Management for Enterprise Tech Journal. The first three articles published this year are entitled Heading off Project Slippage, Keeping Stakeholders in the Loop, and The Pros and Cons of Steering Committees.
A Transactional Culture Analysis of Corporate Sustainability Reporting Practices: Six Examples from India From Dr Taran Patel, Program Director, Master in International Business
Dr Taran Patel (Program Director, Masters in International Business – Grenoble Campus; and Associate Professor, GEM) has recently published an article in Business and Society, a CNRS-listed journal. The article entitled ‘A Transactional Culture Analysis of Corporate Sustainability Reporting Practices: Six Examples from India’ is co-authored with Dr Steve Rayner from the University of Oxford.
In this article Patel and Rayner explain that Corporate sustainability (CS) can be defined as organizations’ commitment to profitability, environment and social well-being. This study uses a transactional culture analysis of CS reporting practices to explain why some Indian organizations conform to voluntary CS reporting guidelines and others do not. Most past studies typically use national culture to explain differences in CS practices across nations.
The national culture concept embeds corporate cultures within the larger national culture, neglecting intra-nation diversity. Conversely, according to the transactional culture approach (TCA) used in this study, cultures are plural and independent of geo-ethnic boundaries, and emerge through social transactions. TCA encourages multilevel explorations of complex social phenomena. Since CS reporting preferences are the outcome of ongoing transactions among organizational stakeholders across different levels, TCA is more appropriate for this study.
The authors use Mary Douglas’s Cultural Framework (DCF) as a transactional framework of social accountability. A qualitative exploration of six Indian organizations using DCF reveals different dominant forms of social accountability in these organizations: either alone or as paired hybrids. Consequently, each organization prioritizes different stakeholders and reacts differently to voluntary CS reporting guidelines. The authors explain that identifying the dominant form or forms of social accountability in organizations and understanding their underlying reasons for resisting voluntary CS guidelines will enable managers to secure better collaboration for their CS initiatives.
GGSB AT GMC (GLOBAL MANAGEMENT CHALLENGE) From Isabelle Chaboud, Accounting Finance and Law department - GEM Professor and GMC Coach MBAFT12, MIB 29 2011-2012
Another good year! For the third year in a row, GGSB had several teams participating in the GMC (Global Management Challenge) : the biggest strategic and management challenge in the world with more than 450 000 university students and company managers participating in this event throughout the world.
In 2009-2010, GGSB had one MBA team qualified for the French final, and since then, every year, our GGSB teams qualified for the French semi-finals.
This year 5 MBA teams participated to this challenge and four teams (out of five) qualified for the French semi-finals.
One team from MIB 29 also took part this year and qualified for the French semi-finals. This is a very demanding and complex game where students have to run a virtual company taking decisions on 66 parameters each week (Finance, Production, HR, Marketing..). The company with the highest share price is the winning company. All decisions are entered in a simulator and interact on each other. This challenge is time consuming and requires excellent team work and the ability to take decisions under pressure.
It is an excellent way to put into practice concepts and techniques learnt during their GGSB Program. It demonstrates the ability of the students to solve complex problems in an international competitive environment: it is one of the key experiences of the MBA program.
I am really proud to say that, each year, since our first participation to the challenge, GGSB teams got through to the French semi-finals with the top best Business and Engineer Schools : HEC, Les Mines Paris….Another example of the good performance of our students.

The GGSB placement survey
From Julie Perrin-Halot - Associate Dean/Director of Quality Centre QUID (Quality and Institutional Development)
For the last 3 years, Grenoble Ecole de Management, has been conducting systematic graduate surveys for all of its undergraduate, graduate and certificate-granting executive education programs at GGSB, ESC and EMSI. Graduates are surveyed for 3 years after graduation. The results provide us with important information concerning employment conditions for the different graduating classes – sectors of activity, job titles, salaries, etc., and this over a period of three years for each cohort. The surveys also give us indications concerning job satisfaction and the feeling the graduates have about the pertinence of their degree for the job they currently occupy or its role in any career progression they may have made. The objective of this survey is tri-fold:
- One of the main advantages of this survey is that it allows us to verify that our program portfolio and content is coherent with the current job market. If the results alert us to a “gap”, the school can put corrective actions into place to re-align with the demands of the professional world. - A second objective is to respond to the requirements for data of this type for the certifications/accreditations of our degrees by national and international organizations. This ensures that our degrees our recognized by our peers and by the proper authorities and it increases their value and visibility for recruiters.
- Last, but not least, the surveys allow us to provide complete and accurate data to our press office as they manage relations with the national and international press responsible for business school rankings. This in turn ensures that our graduates remain among those the most sought after by today’s companies. So concretely speaking, each graduate is invited by mail once a year during the three years following graduation to take a few minutes to complete the survey which then allows us to turn this action into a means of increasing both the quality of your program and the value of your degree.
Loïck Roche appointed as Dean of Grenoble Ecole de Management
From Mary Zaccai, GEM International Press Officer
As of 1st July 2012, Grenoble Ecole de Management (GEM) has a new governance structure: Loïck Roche is appointed as Dean whilst Thierry Grange, former Dean, becomes President of the Strategic Board of Grenoble Ecole de Management. Established in 1984 by Grenoble’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Grenoble Ecole de Management is ranked in the top national and international business schools’ rankings. The School has based its development strategy on three major pillars: Management of Technology & Innovation, Geopolitics and Innovative Pedagogy.
A new governance
In order to continue its legacy and anticipate the changes that impact its environment and future, a new governance, based on a model of international schools similar to GEM, in terms of rankings and size, has been put in place.
The new governance is made of an existing Board of Directors and a new Strategic Board in order to associate operational and strategic planning and leadership. Both these boards are respectively led by Loïck Roche who becomes Dean of the School and Thierry Grange who has been appointed as President of the Strategic Board.
Loïck Roche: Profile of the new Dean of Grenoble Ecole de Management
Graduate of ESSEC, Loïck Roche holds a Ph.D. in Psychology, a Ph.D. in Philosophy and a post-doctorate degree (HDR – Accreditation to supervise Research) in Management Sciences. He began his career as a Consultant in HR and Organizations in 1988. In 1995, he joins Grenoble Ecole de Management as a research faculty member. Since 1995, he also held the positions of Management and Technology Department Manager (1996 -2000); Faculty Dean (2001 - 2009); Associate Dean for Academics Research and Faculty (2002 - 2012); Associate Director (2004 - 2012); Director of the Doctoral School (2006 - 2011); Vice-Dean (2011 - 2012). Since the 1
st July 2012, he is Dean of
Grenoble Ecole de Management.
Loïck Roche is an expert in management; well-being at work, and in performance of businesses. He is also the author
or co-author of over thirty books.
Loick Roche, new Dean of Grenoble Ecole de Management said: “Our environment is undergoing major transformations. International competition, and we must be thrilled about it, grows relentlessly every year. In France, new trends are changing the environment of Schools and Universities. A radical reform is taking place in terms of teaching methods and course contents. Businesses, new generations, executive education participants are no longer accepting the faculty member as sole guardian of knowledge and the classroom as only place to learn.
“Whilst we have nearly 7000 students, 1200 employees, 130 academic partners worldwide, and an effective international positioning, we needed to, in order to maintain our efficiency and secure our future, innovate in terms of our governance.”
Thierry Grange, whilst continuing his commitment to the accreditation bodies AACSB and EFMD, becomes President of the Strategic Board of Grenoble Ecole de Management. The mission of this board is to measure the adequacy between the strategy of the School and its objectives, and to assess new strategic development opportunities in France and abroad.
Thierry Grange co-founded Grenoble Ecole de Management, known as “ESC Grenoble” at the time, in 1984. He held functions such as professor, visiting-faculty (USA, Europe, Russia, China and Africa), Director of Pedagogy and International Development, and Dean and Director from 2002 to 2012.

There are so many ways to define networking...
Food for thought and inspiration to carry on this mission…
