Overview

In this unit, members will examine the beliefs and ideals of certain historical figures to explain why they made certain choices in their lives. Members will reflect on how the choices, actions, and movements of others has impacted their way of life today. Through these activities, members will investigate how individuals, groups, and institutions affect society. Finally, members will make connections between these historical figures and their lives as young people in America today. Please note: Because some activities require longer than the average time, some days may reflect only two activities as opposed to three.

Introduction

This module uses a variety of biographies as a springboard for exploration, collaboration, metacognition, making connections and critical thinking. Members will investigate how individuals, groups, and institutions affect society. Throughout “What’s Your Movement,” members will examine the beliefs and ideals of various historical figures. As members learn about these historical influencers, they will explore why they made certain choices in their lives. Members will reflect on, and make connections with the manner in which the choices, actions, and movements of others has influenced their way of life today.

Description Members will listen to “Man in the Mirror” by Michael Jackson and interpret the lyrics to set the tone for the activities to come.

Objective Members will be introduced to an influential piece of music in the form of “Man in the Mirror” by Michael Jackson. Using multimedia, members will engage in critical thinking and discussion about the role of humans in making a positive impact on the world.

Steps to Follow

1 Sit in the circle with the members. Tell the members that we will briefly discuss historical figures who have made an impact on history and the way we live today.

Start a small discussion by asking:

a. What does it mean to be a historical figure?

b. What makes a historical figure historical?

c. Can anyone be a historical figure? Why or why not?

Can you name some historical figures from the past who have made a difference in our lives today?

3 Say, “Let’s learn about Mother Teresa. Does anyone know who she is?” (Listen for responses.)

4 Explain to the members that they will be completing a WebQuest to learn more about Mother Teresa.

5 Members will work with a partner to explore websites and videos to learn more about Mother Theresa.

6 After 10 minutes, partner groups will switch WebQuest sheets to add to the WebQuest from a different group.

7 After 10 more minutes, members will switch again.

8 Bring members back together. Ask each member to share something new they learned about Mother Teresa. Post their Web Quests

Description Members will learn how Thurgood Marshall’s work to protect human rights is important to the way we live today.

Objective As a follow-up to their research about Thurgood Marshall, members will create a postage stamp about another historical figure of their choice who embodies the beliefs, ideals and accomplishments of Thurgood Marshall.

1 Ask members to name people who have a postage stamp in their honor, and explain in their words why they think the person they named was given a postage stamp.

2 Write Thurgood Marshall in the center of the paper in large letters.

3 Invite the members to use their cell phones and all available devices to do a 1 minute search of Thurgood Marshall.

4 Ask the members to yell out one word descriptions telling what they found. Add pertinent words to the word splash.

Tell the members they will rotate stations between biography books and computers where they will research Thurgood Marshall. They will write important information about him on the notes they take. Ask them to be sure to identify who, what, when, where, why, how.

After 20 minutes, ask the members to build upon the ideas we shared when identifying a person who embodies the ideals, accomplishments, and contributions of Thurgood Marshall who does not have a postage stamp.

7 Ask the members to create a postage stamp of their own in front of the person of their choice. Show them Thurgood Marshall’s stamp as an example.

8 Ask the members to share their postage stamps and if possible, post the stamps together in a common place “quilt style.”

Activity 2 Words that Change the World

Members will reflect on research about historical figures and social impact to date. Members will use their schema to create a “Expression Café” in the form of song, rap, free verse, haiku or acrostic poem using the previous activities, music and discussions for inspiration. Members will create, and perform in the “Expression Cafe.”

Objective They will use this experience to deepen their understanding of historical figures and apply their learning to written expression.

Steps to Follow

1 Ask the members to get with a partner. Ask them to visit www.fakebook.com .

Let them know that this is a simulated social media site where young people have created imaginary social media pages for historical figures based on their research, critical thinking, and creativity.

3 Ask them to pull up Dr. Martin Luther King and explore. Encourage them to notice how the creators added pictures, ideas, and even quotations that they think Dr. King would have posted.

4 Go around the room, and allow each partner group to pull an index card.

Objective Members will demonstrate their communication, creativity, and critical thinking skills through personal interaction, reflection and critical thinking.

How to Prepare

Explain the description and objective to the group.

*Connect with positive role models in your community (civic figures,

educators, public servants, clergy, law enforcement, etc.). The club

director could possibly help with this effort as well.

Invite the positive figures to the Club. Explain to them that a group

of young people would like to interview, learn from, and be

inspired by them.

Put members in groups of 4-5 members each.

Steps to Follow

1 Tell members they use all of their collective experiences to connect with a positive influence and decide for themselves how they can positively impact the world.

Write the “guest list” on chart paper and post in the front of the room. Ask members if they know who the people are, and let them know that while we have learned about people throughout history, these are people who are making a difference in their community today.

3 Collectively develop a list of interview questions for the panel of speakers. Once the group has agreed on the top questions, print the questions from the computer or onto index cards.

Allow each member to choose one question card. Have them to write how they would like to influence society on the back. Give them time to practice asking their selected question. This may conclude the first day of this activity, depending on how much time this takes.
