You may have your screen set too dim or too bright to accurately judge your photo.

Using your histogram insures that you have not over or under exposed your photograph.

No shadows are blocked and not highlights are blown out. All details are there.

Do your homework to know them.

To be the best at capturing them, teach your fingers and hands to take the pictures. Practice often. Give yourself assignments. Even if the subjects are not there, or the lighting/weather stinks, you can still practice your best techniques.

Take plenty of shots, trying different techniques. It costs you nothing. You don’t need to save your practice stuff either.

To best present your subjects, understand the subject of each image. Optimize it by enhancing the subject and making the rest insignificant.

I should add that the iconic image of Buzz Aldrin on the Moon above, was “’shopped” – many years before the creation of Adobe Systems and its flagship product. The original image just clipped the top of Aldrin’s visor and pack. So before releasing it, NASA did what was best for the subject -- filled in the missing part and added more sky for artistic balance. (Goggle “AS11-40-5903” if you’re interested in further details.)
