EndNote?

EndNoteisabibliographicmanagementandresearchsoftwareprogram.WithEndNoteyoucansearch

databasesonline,organizereferencesaswellascitereferences,instantlyformatandchangeyour

bibliographyandshareyourlibrary.Inadditionyoucanattachimages,PDFsandotherfilestocitationsin

yourlibrary,makingthemeasiertoaccess.

EndNoteisavailableforWindowsandMaccomputers. Thecampusbookstoreoffersstudents(butnot

facultyorstaff)adiscountonpurchase. Librariansareavailabletoassistusersandteachworkshopson

EndnotehoweverEndNoteisnotavailableforpersonaluseonlibrarycomputers.

EndNoteX2isthelatestversionofEndNoteandhasfeaturesnotavailableinearlierversions.Becauseof

changesin

the

software

we

suggest

working

with

PreparingyourEndNoteLibrary

SettingUpanEndNoteLibrary

1. OpenEndNote.IftheGetStartedwithEndNotescreenappears,selectCreateanewEndNoteLibraryandclickOK.Otherwise,selectFilethenNew....

2. Giveyournewlibraryanameandsaveitinalocationthatmakessensetoyou.InstallingEndNotesListofMedicalJournalTitlesandAbbreviations

Beforeyoubeginaddingreferencestoyourlibraryconsiderthatsomecitationstylesusejournals'complete

titles;othersuseabbreviations. EndNotecanmakethenecessarychanges,butonlyifthelistoftitlesis

importedbeforereferencesareaddedtotheEndNotelibrary:

ImportingCitationsfromPubMedusinganImportFilter

PubMedisoneofthefewmajordatabasesthatcannotexportreferencesdirectlytoEndNote. However,

youcanimportcitationsfromPubMedusingImportFilters,whichhelpEndNote"translate"yoursaved

citationsintoaformatitunderstands.

1. Savingcitationsinthecorrectformat Afterselectingcitationstosave,selectMEDLINEfromthedropdownDisplaymenu:

FromtheSendtodropdownmenu,selectFileandsaveyourreferencestoatextfile. Yourbrowser

will

probably

ask

if

you

want

to

save

or

open

the

file.

Pick

Save.

BesuretousetherightReferenceType.ThedefaultisJournalArticle,butotherchoicesinthepulldownmenuincludeBookSection(usedforbookchapters)andThesis. Whenyouchange

ReferenceTypes, EndNoteautomaticallypromptsyouforfieldsneededforthattype(editors

names,chapterauthorsnames,etc.).

Ingeneral,youdontneedtouseanypunctuationwhenentering(someexceptionsarelistedbelow).

4. LocatethereferenceyouwanttousebyscrollingthroughthelistorbyusingEndNotesSearchfunction.(FromtheReferencesmenu,chooseSearchReferences)

5. LeavingEndNoteopen,returntoyourWorddocument. ClickthearrownexttoInsertCitationintheEndNoteribbon'sCitationpanel,andselectInsertSelectedCitation(s).

6. Youcaneitherrepeatsteps4through6foreachadditionalcitation,orclickInsertCitationintheEndNoteribbon'sCitationpanel. AnEndNoteX2FindCitation(s)windowwillopen. Enterkeywords

andclickSearchtosearchthroughyourwholelibrary. Alistofmatchingreferenceswillappear. Select

theone(s)youwanttouseandclickInsert.

7. EndNotewillembedthecitationinthedesiredformat,andappendthebibliographicreferenceattheendofthepaper. Thismaynotbeinstantaneous;ifyouhavemanyreferences,youwillprobablyfirst

seeagenericcitationthatlookslikethis:{Albretsen,1998 #11}forashortwhilebeforetheformatted

citationappears. Ifthesegenericcitationsdon'tgoaway,orifthewrongoutputstyleisbeingused,see

ChangingtheFormatofaBibliographyinthenextsection.

8. Youcanadd,remove,orrearrangecitationswithintheWorddocument. EndNotewillrenumberorrealphabetizeasnecessary.

9. Whenyouarealldone,saveyourdocument. (Actually,youshouldbesavingiteverynowandthenanyway,butbesuretodosowhenyou'realldone.)

10.Remembertoproofreadyourbibliography!Theremaybesmallformattingerrorsoreventyposthatyou

should

correct

manually.

If

you

find

major

formatting

errors,

make

sure

you

are

using

the

correct

outputstyle. Ifyoustillseemajorformattingerrors,checkoutthe"EndNoteTips&Troubleshooting"

handoutforhelpeditingastyle.

11. IfyouaresubmittingthedocumentelectronicallyespeciallytoapublisherwhoseInstructionstoAuthorssaynottouseEndNoteyouwillneedtoremovethefieldcodes. ClickConvertCitationsand

BibliographyfromtheEndNoteribbon'sBibliographypanel. ThenselectConverttoPlainText. Word

willcreateanewcopyofyourdocument,removingEndNote'sfieldcodesandleavingthefully

formattedbibliography. Savethisdocumentunderanewname,andsubmitittothepublisher.

Besuretokeeptheoriginalversionofyourdocumentwiththefieldcodes,incaseyouneedtomakeanychanges:

EndNotecannotworkwithadocumentthathasbeenconvertedtoplaintext,soifyouneedtomakechangesyou

will

have

to

have

the

original

document

to

work

with.

ChangingtheFormatofaBibliography

IntheEndNoteribbon'sBibliographypanel,selecttheoutputstyleyouwanttouse. Ifyourstyleisn'tonthedropdown,pickSelectAnother

Styletoseethefulllist. SelecttheappropriatestyleandclickOK. It

maytakeafewsecondsforthebibliographytobereformatted.

Ifitdoesn'treformatautomatically,clickUpdateCitationsandBibliographyfromtheEndNoteribbon'sBibliographypanel.

MovinganEndNoteLibrarytoAnotherComputer

IfyouneedtomoveyourEndNoteLibrarytoanothercomputer,orwanttoshareitwithanotherEndNote

user,youwillneedtomovetwoseparateparts,whichwillbelocatedinthesamefolder. Thesetwoparts

areyourEndNoteLibrary,whichwillhavetheextension.enl,andafolderwiththesamenameasyour

EndNoteLibrary,butwitha.Dataextension.

InEndNoteX2,thesetwofilescanbecompressedintoasinglefile,whichmakesmovingthefileor

attachingittoanemailmessagesimple.FromtheFilemenuselectCompressedlibrary. Youhavethe

optiontoCreateacompressedlibrarywhichwillcreatethefileandsavetoyourcomputerortoCreate&

Emailwhichwillopenyouremailandautomaticallyattachthecompressedlibrary. Thelibraryanddatafile

willbecompressedintoasinglefilewitha.enlxextension. Toopenthisfile,simplydoubleclickit(note:

therecipientmusthaveEndNoteversion9orlatertoopenthefile).
