GETTING STARTED with AOL Instant Messanger (AIM) PCat the Language Resource Center - U of Michigan

REGISTRATION:

1) Open a web browser and go to the AIM web site: http://aim.aol.com

2) At the bottom of the blue section you will see "Don't have screen name?" Click on "Get one FREE"

3) Fill out the form with screenname (real name + number), password (not kerberos),e-mail (real), birthdate, and word verification fields.

4) Click on the “Submit” button.5) If all fields have been properly filled in, a

confirmation message will be displayed along with confirmation instructions.

6) Open your email and reply to the confirmation e-mail from the AIM registration office. You should not receive more mail from AOL.

CREATING / JOINING A CHAT ROOM 1) Open AOL Instant Messenger application. If you are at the LRC, using a Windows computer, AIM can be

opened via the START > PROGRAMS > AOL INSTANT MESSANGER.LRC Windows

2) To SIGN ON, enter your screenname and password and

click the SIGN ON button. After sign on completes, a "Welcome" message may appear. Click in the top left box to close this window.

3) Select the “Chat” button at the bottom of the window.

PAIR GROUP

4) In the “Screen names to invite” field, type in your own screen name. Everyone invites him/her -self to the chat.

5) In the “Name of your Buddy Chat room:” field, type in the name of your chat room.

6) Click the SEND button. If the room does not exist, it will now be created. If already exists, you will simply join the chat.

CHATTING 1) A chat window, with the following sections, will appear:

a) Chat transcript area. Postings from everyone in the group will appear here.

b) Participant list for the room.c) Your text entry field. Type

your text here. Format menu above text box, including link to relevant web sites. Click SEND to post your message.

d) You may enlarge the window by clicking and dragging the bottom left corner.

2) It is also possible to voice chat and video chat with AIM
