Settled confidence. Sheryl's son Brad stood by the side of her bed, brooding and frustrated. His train- ing and experience as a doctor had not helped stem the onslaught of cancer in his mom's body. Sheryl had been in a deep sleep for the past forty eight hours, death slowly inching closer. I had been in her hospital room a few minutes when the nurse came in to check on her. Maybe it was the nurse's poking around, or maybe the hushed conversation Brad and I were having, but Sheryl opened her eyes. A big smile crossed her face and she said “Hi” to her nurse. Then she noticed that her nurse was obviously with child, and with a twinkle in her eyes, asked her how far along she was. The nurse told her that her due date was just a couple of weeks away. Without any warning, Sheryl reached up to her nurse and put her left hand gently on her belly and began to pray for the child she was carrying. I was so awed by the sacredness of the moment as this dying mother spoke with a quiet confidence and a sense of humble familiarity with God as she prayed for a safe delivery for this child and its mother, and for the baby's salvation. SETTLED CONFIDENCE...

Settled confidence. Sheryl's son Brad stood by the side of her bed, brooding and frustrated. His train-ing and experience as a doctor had not helped stem the onslaught of cancer in his mom's body.

Settled Confidence (Continued)

In the face of death, what gives a woman like Sheryl that kind of settled confidence and peace? Over the years that she was a part of College Hills Baptist Church family, I had many con-versations with her about our Lord Jesus Christ and she was al-ways excited to share with me what God was teaching her in His Word. She seemed to view life with all its ups and downs through the lens of who God was. It was obvious to everyone who knew her that she not only knew things about God; she knew God. There is a temptation for be-lievers to view God through the lens of our circumstances. When we succumbed to this temptation, we reduce God to the sum total of who we are and our needs. And we chain ourselves to what is going on in our lives. But our God is bigger than we are, greater and more powerful than all the trials and difficulties this fallen world drops on our laps. Our confidence must not be placed on our difficult circum-stances changing for the better, but on the God who is unchang-ing, who is gracious and merciful, and who is carrying out His plan of transforming us into the like-ness of His Son.

When Nebuchadnezzar threat-ened Mishael, Hananiah and Azariah with the fiery furnace if they did not bow down and worship his image of gold, they replied to the king, “O Ne-buchadnezzar, we do not need to de-fend ourselves before you in this mat-ter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king. But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.” (Daniel 3:16-18)

The three Jewish young men recognized that their God could de-liver them. But they also recognized that He might not deliver them, but their faith was not going to be based on whether they were delivered or not. Their faith rested on one single foundation: God, and God alone. Sheryl's faith was not based on whether she could beat her cancer or not. Like Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, her settled confidence was on God and God alone. The chal-lenge for Sheryl and for the three Jewish young men is the same chal-lenge all believers face. Will we trust God and His Word, or will we trust our circumstances?
