Motivation What motivates me to stick to this career? First of all, it is fascinating to be able to see firsthand, the flowering of creative talent. Students enter as novices and leave the school with a legacy of work, which is in many cases top class, recognized as such by architects and the rest of society. Reading about architecture is always a pleasure, especially intense writings. Being on the jury to select best works of both students and professional architects is always exciting. Lecturing to students on Architecture all the time sharpens my thoughts. Being associated with RV School of Architecture from the very beginning, I have seen it evolve into a mature school of architecture in the country. The thought that I have contributed to it in a small way is very satisfying.
Success in Architecture Successful architects throughout the world have been highly creative persons known for their original ideas. Le Corbusier and F.L. Wright were among the most gifted Architects in 20th century. Even Indian Architects such as B.V. Doshi and Charles Correa are known internationally. We can identify certain common features among these renowned Architects. All these men have not only been highly creative but also extremely intelligent. They have dedicated their lives to the cause of Architecture and were completely focused. All of them travelled extensively and absorbed ideas from a variety of sources. Creativity is all about the ability to integrate
seemingly unrelated ideas borrowed not only from architecture but from other fields as well. All of these architects possess this ability in
great measure. In the 21st century, technology and globalization are having a great impact on architecture. An Architect should have ability to integrate latest technologies into design without comprising aesthetics. In some cases, technology itself can become the vocabulary of aesthetics. For example, the Spanish
architect Santiago Calatrava is known for exploiting structural ideas for architectural expression.

Advice to StudentsVisual sensitivity is the fundamental requirement for an aspirant of B. Arch. Course. The student has to be inclined toward the visual and be sensitive to line, color, texture, shape and light. Ability to visualize object is a valuable skill. This is usually reflected by interest in sketching and drawing. Lateral thinking and thinking out – of - the- box, is a desirable skill. Interest in the arts, especially visual arts like painting and sculpture is positive quality. One has to be comfortable in an open – ended situation and thinking of possibilities ratar than expect a definitive answer. Spatial thinking skills can be honed during the course, but basic talent and aptitude will help the student to scale great heights. A student of architecture, to excel should first of all be highly gifted in spatial thinking. The student mind should be like a sponge and absorb ideas from all sources, which include teachers, architects, books; journals visit to different building and of course the Internet. The role of teachers is paramount in architecture, which is not a highly structured body of knowledge, unlike say science or engineering. Therefore it is imperative that a student checks about the quality of faculty before opting for a school of Architecture.
Future of architectural profession in IndiaThe scope for architectural profession in India in the next 10-20 years is indeed very promising as is reflected in the increasing demand for architecture course. Like China, India is a very populous and developing country and with a growing economy, there is increasing demand for infrastructure and buildings. Liberalization and Globalization have spurred this demand for infrastructure and buildings. Liberalization and globalization have spurred this demand . With an exponential increase in the schools of Architecture in India, Architects will be in metros and big cities, but in medium and small towns as well. The increasing middle class (estimated around
35 crores) and urban rich will demand better and better infrastructure. The involvement of the Government in housing for the LIG and EWS
enhance the outreach of architectural practice.

Perks of being an Architect/Designer1. An Architect or a Designer is a sort of an inventor. Like an inventor who goes
about making and designing new gadgets, you go around designing new buildings and products. It is a very satisfying profession You’ll get tremendous sense of delight after your concepts on paper transform into real buildings or products. You’ll know the joy of creation in this field
2. The course is a lot of fun. Unlike traditional colleges, your course gives you the liberty to use the right side of your brain, the creative part. You get a lot of opportunities to showcase your creativity and ingenuity while designing.
3. You get to study various fields of human endeavor, including Art, History, Material Science, Physics, engineering… anything and everything that can help improve the living environment of human beings. It is the most diverse subject you can find. And yet, this field attracts the most creative and romantic minds in the world.
4. The work is one of the most challenging and enjoyable. Every project is different. There is absolutely no monotony in life. The thrill and the challenge of work is exhilarating to say the least.
5. If you’re the kind of guy (or gal) who likes to work with his (or her) hands, it is the right profession for you. In the course, you get to work with your hands. Its not just about reading and writing all the time, but you must have a hands-on approach on many assignments. Building scale models, making surveys, talking to people… its a very active field.
Bonus. We can wear ridiculous eye wear and get away with it. People expect architects or designers to be a little bit nerd mixed with creative artist. This conflict of known social paradigms allows generous liberties to be taken with your personal billboard (but you have to earn it).
“Designers need to blend technology with instinct”
Designers today need to create the perfect balance between technology and instinct. As companies complete to find a client base for their products, designers are in demand to bring in the much – needed creative Innovation.
With the evolution of a free – market economy, experts highlight the need to carefully blend hands – on manual mode and digital technology in creating newer designs rooted in the five senses.
Today the concept of design has completely changed. Where once manual craft dominated, technology intervention has made tasks easier to match pace with the demands of the market.
“Design is a process students have to learn by heart. To do this , it is at times necessary to move away from technology and use the organs and the senses. Let us use this first and take technology as an advantage. Design is related to human needs, comfort and aesthetics, “said Pankaj Patel, dean, United Institute of Design(UID), who is also one of the first graduates from the National Institute of Design(NID). “With the growth of human needs , and new technological developments, it is obvious that we will be influenced by the comfort and convenience, “he said..
“Earlier one had the luxury to think freely at basic levels. Today, the influence of technology has assumed magnanimous proportions. Society is becoming impatient. There is a demand for professionalism. All industries are running at a high pace to match this demand, “he said.
While design and its core are constant, new technology brings in a new perception, Patel said.
PAnKA J PATeL One of the first graduate from NID.
