1. Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generator (CESQG)- Less than 220 pounds a

month

2. Small Quantity Generator (SQG)- 220-2,200 pounds a

month- Stricter requirements

3. Large Quantity Generator (LQG)

Common Waste StreamsCommon Waste Streams

Used Oil/Filters/Coolant/Gasoline:1. Used ATF, oil/synthetics2. Used oil/fuel filters3. Used antifreeze4. Contaminated gasoline

Not hazardous waste if recycled.


Parts Washers:1. Drum filled2. Recycling3. Hot/aqueous parts washers4. Brake Washers5. Continued Use Programs6. Smart/SafeWashers

Paint/Thinner Waste:1. Waterborne2. Solvent-containing3. Recyclers – “hockey pucks”



Paint Booth Filters:

May be hazardous waste, especially if using paint containing heavy metals.


Universal Waste:1. Batteries2. Fluorescent lamps3. E-waste



Tires:Many states have specific tire storage

regulations – how many, where they are stored, how they are stored


Shop Towels, Paper Towels:1. Can be laundered at a facility connected to

a POTW2. If not laundered, must be collected as a

hazardous waste if contaminated with a toxic, F002, or F005 chemical


Wheel Weights:Lead-containing wheel weights are

hazardous and must be recycled or disposed of as hazardous waste.



Oil/Water Separators:Sludge must be tested or presumed

hazardous.



Brake Dust:Some states consider

dust from the lathe to be potentially hazardous, depending on the content of your rotors. At a minimum, dust should be collected neatly in a bin.


Aerosol Cans:1. May be thrown in trash if completely

empty of product AND propellant2. May be punctured with an approved

device only – waste must be captured

• Waste streams should be kept separated• Waste must be compatible with container• Container must be labeled• Hazardous waste containers must be kept

closed• Weekly container inspections may be

required based on your generator status

• Registered vendors, HHW• Legitimate recycling

• Hazardous waste signers must have DOT Hazardous Materials certification

• Hazardous waste manifests must be kept for a minimum of 3 years

• Cradle-to-grave• Double-check your papers,

know your vendors!
