Language Structure and Conventions – expanding on terminology from previous

Introduction Learners will experience poems and cartoons

Learners will engage with a poem and be able to retell their perceptions to an adult

Learners will engage with a cartoon and answer the questions posed

Learners will engage with the cartoon and be able to make meaning and draw on

that knowledge and his/her own experience to write a story

Learners will engage with the language structure notes and apply their knowledge in

the worksheets provided.

Consolidation Learners are challenged with activities to apply their knowledge and skills after each

section.

Listening and Speaking: Tell a story

1. 1.Listen to the poem as it is being read to you. It may be read more than once.

2. Make notes on the worksheet provided

3. Think of a story you want to tell that is relevant to the poem in some way.

4. Keep the following in mind when you tell your story: The characterization of characters

in your story, Diction, your body language, interpret mood, atmosphere time-line, ironic

twists and how your story will end.

Reading and Viewing: Cartoon

1. Read the text for a quick impression on its content (skimming and scanning)

2. Read it a second time for meaning and to understand the moral.

3. Answer the questions

Writing and Presenting: Narrative Essay

1. Use the notes provided and prior knowledge from previous grades to ensure you know

what a narrative essay is and what it should consist of.

2. Complete the writing process (revise, editing and proof-read)

3. Present your completed narrative essay

Language Structure and Conventions: Simple Present Tense and Simple Past Tense

the writing process, namely revising, editing and proof-reading of your first draft, and then finally
